We are pleased to announce the new BookZone, BookZone2.0. From now on, we won’t just introduce new books or journals, rather BZ2.0 will capture important themes – topical or historical events, controversies or just be amusing – emphasizing the relevance of National Library of Australia (NLA) holdings.

For our first feature post, we are paying respect to the late Dr Pattana Kittiarsa (р╕нр╕▓р╕Ир╕▓р╕гр╕вр╣М р╕Юр╕▒р╕Тр╕Щр╕▓ р╕Бр╕┤р╕Хр╕┤р╕нр╕▓р╕йр╕▓) (1968-2013) who sadly passed away on 9 January in Singapore. Dr Pattana was a great ethnographer of contemporary Thai society, as we see so well explained in the obituary by Professor Charles Keyes.

The NLA holds numerous publications by Dr Pattana, NM readers can find a link to the titles here. Our holding includes his latest book: Medium, Monks and Amulets (Silkworm Books, 2012). Dr Pattana’s extraordinary works will be read and reread, and discussed for many years to come.

Social science has always been a strength of the collection, especially politics, religion, and anthropology constitute a significant proportion of the Thai collection. Dr Pattana was one of the newer generation of Thais writing about Thai society, and through translation and writing in English making this available to the wider scholarly community.

The NLA is pleased to be able to make available a wide collection of work by Thai scholars dealing with Thai society, and we suggest readers investigate the collection further. Below we list a short selection of titles by well known anthropologists that we invite you to browse:
