New Mandala readers in the Canberra area who are interested in Malaysia, have an opportunity to get up close and personal with one of Malaysia’s best, renowned economist, Professor Wing Thye Woo.

The Canberra based Malaysia Interest Group has organised a dinner with Professor Woo where beyond the customary “makan” session, there will be a discussion on Malaysia.

A little about Professor Woo.

Professor Woo Wing Thye is one of Malaysia’s foremost academics at the international stage. He is Professor of Economics at University of California, Davis, Distinguished Professor at the Central University of Finance and Economics, Beijing and Fudan University, Shanghai. He is also Director of the East Asia Program at The Earth Institute, Colombia University. He has acted as advisor to numerous governments and inter-governmental agencies. His involvement in politics and policy in Malaysia stretches awhile back. He was first appointed to the International Advisory Panel to Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi in 2005. In recent years, he has played a key role in the development of Penang and is Chair of the International Economic Advisory Panel of Penang as well as the Director of Penang Institute, an organisation charged with creating new policy ideas for the Penang government. Professor Woo was born in Penang, Malaysia. He graduated from Swarthmore College with a degree in Economics and Engineering, Masters degrees in economics from Yale and Harvard University, culminating with a PhD in economics from Harvard University.
