Anwar Ibrahim, in an immediate response, has claimed that the WikiLeaks expose about him further strengthens his arguments that the sodomy charges are an elaborate conspiracy by the BN led Malaysian government to derail his political ambitions and smother the nascent development of a stronger opposition. Pakatan Rakyat has also demanded Singapore come clean on their comments.

“No doubt, we are talking about WikiLeaks and there is bound to be a lot of junk and unsubstantiated slander involved, but the interesting point to note is that the root source is actually Singapore intelligence officials. Why did they ‘leak’ to the Australian officials? Did they also inform Malaysia, U.S. and the other South East Asian nations?” PKR vice president Tian Chua told Malaysia Chronicle.”

Pakatan Rakyat (PR) lawmakers have demanded Singapore respond to a WikiLeaks’ revelation that regional intelligence agencies believe Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had committed sodomy, claiming that it was a “high-level conspiracy” implicating both the Malaysian and the island republic’s Special Branch police.

They also want an explanation on leaked US State Department cables which reported Singaporean senior government officials as saying that Malaysia’s “decline” was due to “incompetent politicians.”

Meanwhile, Singapore has rushed to assure that the WikiLeaks should not be interpreted out of context, fearing a fall-out with Malaysia.

In September 2008, Kausikan, a senior foreign affairs official, told the US Deputy Secretary of Defense for East Asia David Sedney that the “situation in neighbouring Malaysia is confused and dangerous”, fuelled by “a distinct possibility of racial conflict” that could see ethnic Chinese “flee” Malaysia and “overwhelm” Singapore.

“A lack of competent leadership is a real problem for Malaysia,” said Kausikan, citing the need for Datuk Seri Najib Razak to prevail politically in order to avoid prosecution in connection with the murder of Mongolian model Altantuya Shaariibuu.

“Najib has his neck on the line in connection with a high-profile murder case,” noted Kausikan.
