Across mainland Southeast Asia there is a seemingly permanent tussle between calls for freedom of expression and the prevailing authoritarian instincts. Recently trawling the New Mandala back catalogue, I stumbled upon this years old material. It comes from a dark period of Burma’s recent history that is already regularly over-looked. I thought this example of how certain Tatmadawmen dealt with the media, and with a humanitarian crisis in their country, should get some renewed attention.
