Further to the statement of concern by scholars at Chulalongkorn University, here is an email update about the plight of Ajarn Suthachai Yimprasert. I don’t have time to do a full translation, but the key point of concern is that he is on a hunger strike and because he is a diabetic this could have serious health repercussions. His lawyer is trying to get permission for him to be able to attend the funeral of his father in law.

Let’s hear it from the non-stooges at Chulalongkorn.
Posing as an academic, as a public representative of reason and reflection and drawing a salary from the public dole to boot does require one to stand up against unreasonable acts on the part of those in power, acts which plainly work to the detriment of the individual, to the detriment of one’s own institution, and to the detriment of the society which one is supposedly serving.
Not to do so is to exhibit a negative example to one’s own students and to one’s own society at large.
Let us have a show of hands…
Those who believe the de facto government of Thailand is acting reasonably and lawfully and for the benefit of society? Those who support the government’s actions against Ajarn Suthachai Yimprasert?
Those who believe the de facto government ot Thailand is acting unreasonably and unlawfully and to the detriment of society? Those who oppose the government’s actions against Ajarn Suthachai Yimprasert?

[Hope this translation is OK. I add a few words and dates to make it clearer.]
To whom it may concern (especially the human rights organizations),
This is urgent information regarding Dr. Suthachai Yomprasert, a historian who was arrested by the Thai authorities on May 24, 2010. Please help campaign for his release.
Professor Bayan, Dr. Suthachai’s wife, visited her husband at the Adisorn Army Camp in Saraburi earlier today. The army allows only his wife and mother to visit him, and in the morning only.
Dr. Suthachai is detained in a solitary unit. So is Mr Somyos Pruksakasemsuk who was arrested at the same time. Neither has been charged. In fact the arrests of them involved deception by the authorities. Both had got warrants to report to the police for some questioning. They complied. The police told them that they would bring them to the Crime Suppression Headquarter. Instead, they sent them to the Adisorn Army Camp in another province.
Legally, neither is Dr. Suthachai nor Mr. Somyos a law-breaker or a criminal since there is yet any charge. They are detained for interrogation. But they have been treated as if they were felons. Their treatments are more severe than the UDD leaders who are detained at the Naresuan Police Camp.
Dr. Suthachai brought some books to prepare for his class (at Chulalongkorn University) in a few weeks. But the soldiers took those books away and do not allow him to read anything. Dr. Suthachai, therefore, protests by going on a hunger strike. Our serious concern is that he has diabetes, requiring insulin injections twice a day. The lack of food may have serious effects on his condition, including a danger to his life.
This coming Sunday is the funeral for Bayan’s father. Dr. Suthachai’s lawyer will make an appeal to the court to allow him to attend the funeral of his father-in-law. But we do not know if the appeal would be granted, even though he is not yet charged or being a suspect or criminal of any kind whatsoever.

all what I have seen since two weeks is very disturbing as it draws an evident parallell with Burma:
– shutdown of most if not all independent and critical media,
– arrest of monks, desacralization of temples by the army,
– deliberate shooting of unarmed civilians, journalists and medics with the intent to kill,
– unsubstantiated accusations of ‘terrorism’, arrest and detention of activists and now academics without charges.
– all ‘legal’ media focus on the buildings destructions and have completely forgotten that a hundred civilians have been shot by the army. (yes, there is enough evidence to assert that thai soldiers are responsible for most of the deaths)
– slandering of ‘foreign’ media and interference
I’m afraid the UDD is becoming the NLD of Thailand. The thais that woke up from their fairy tale Thailand woke up too late. Who, now, can prevent those who took power through the CRES to hold on indefinitely?
I think all of this has been planned since the day the junta saw the massive red shirt caravan marching through bangkok gaining widespread support and realised the majority of the population wants political change. (they must have freaked out completely).
I also ask myself what went wrong for the UDD, how did they slip from a massive popular movement to a few thousand people entranched behind barricades? The red shirt leaders bear their share of responsibility for this failure.

Thanks for the translation Acharn Thongchai.
I pray for his strength and for the quick release of all political prisoners. Let’s see how the government reacts to some old-fashioned non-violence.
– Is there any indication when Acharn Suthachai began his hunger strike?
– Has this been covered by the mainstream media? I remember reading an article about his detention in the Bangkok Post, but nohting since then.

Re: Anonymous #4,
Suthachai began hunger strike yesterday (27). I talked to his lawyer this morning. The decision was Suthachai’s own (my bow for his bravery), neither his wife nor his lawyer knew in advance. (His wife was rightly quite worried.) According to his lawyer, there’s some chance the police would relent and give back his books (just normal history books). I really, really hope he’s right. Also, his lawyer had to wait for an hour before being allowed to see Suthachai.
I’ve seen the news on Prachatai and Matichon websites, and on Manager website too. But not on other mainstream newspaper websites. Haven’t seen it on Thai Rath print edition today either.

Re #4 and #5 (Aj.Somsak)
I believed I saw this news on Khaosod headline last noon (28).
And thanks ajarn so much for an update of his situation.

Given what I’ve heard about Thai prison food – from a farang who over-stayed his visa by eight days, and was therefore LOCKED UP FOR MORE THAN SIX MONTHS, because he had no money having been ripped off by a Buddhist “nun” – some might consider themselves better off hunger-striking than eating Thai prison poison !!
Two or three bowls of maggot infested rice soup, with a chicken bone thrown in ! Everyday.
Thai prison authorities are such Buddhist humane people with such a great sense of compassion !
McDonalds – you have a great waiting market for you.

I don’t believe that story one bit. I have inadvertently overstayed my visa a number of times caused through floods, badly translated Thai to English and delayed flights.
If the person has no money, the Thai Immigration Police always contact that person’s embassy and an agreement is reached, normally over the phone if that person has to leave on a flight.
The professor is being held at an army barracks at Sara Buri, not a Thai gaol.
If we start “telling stories” we are no better than the current propaganda being issued daily by the CRES.

Today, Khaosod newspaper has an article criticizing Aphisit as regime that increasingly moves away from democracy. Professor Sutachai has never violate any law. For Aphisit regime to put Prof. Sutachai in the military jail in Saraburi province with neither trial nor evidence, is purely an abusive of power.

Thailand is now an unlivable place. For those who think differently, see differently, they are now treated like cats and dogs or even some dirts, that need to be getting rid off. No matter what happened, I can only think of a big changes in a Thai society. The Thais has been fooled for a long long time, ever since they were born. It’s time for all Thai to wake up and realize that what you were taught since you were young were all illusions and propaganda.

Khaosod is now being harassed by Abhisit men for carrying that news and other true reports.
Even ordinary blog like http://siamreport.blogspot.com/ is now blocked (at least in Thailand) for carrying a clip of Kamonket’s mother. Kamonket is a 25-year-old Red Cross volunteer nurse who was shot dead inside Wat Patum, a temple designed as safe haven in anticipation of the imminent attack by the military on the 19th of May. Altogether there are six people who were shot dead inside the temple grounds, three of them wearing Red Cross gown.
This is something that Abhisit govt must explain, instead of blaming “terrorists”. Video clips clearly show soldiers taking up position on the skytrain track in front of the temple.

Does the Emergency decree give the CRES the authority to detain anyone without pressing charges? If the answer is ‘yes’, on what ground does this law supported by the constitution? It looks more like the other way around. BTW, does anybody care to mention, who gave birth to this kind of abusive law? Abhisit once relentlessly criticized this law, is now ruthlessly exercising his authority under this very law.
Thai politicians’ attitude are miles away from what’s called ‘democratic fundamental’. Those who are in power, always forge ‘weapons'(laws included) to serve the best of their interest, unaware that the forged weapons recognise no master. The opposites are actively criticising those in-power, but show no interest in being critical for the flaw of the system or laws. They just wait for their turn to abuse their power.
Are Thais aware of this?

In response to 230volts.
I am a Thai citizen and I do not hate the US lifestyle. I know that your wife may feel that the US lifestyle is heartless but there are reasons for most of the behavior that the Thai culture has not been exposed to. In the US people work a lot more, 80 to 100 hours a week, and typically will work until 60 or 70 years of age. The reason for having an assisting living home is to actually take care of the family since there is no time or means to do it properly. It does not mean that the family loves them any less; it just means they need help in taking care of their family. Currently Thailand also has assisted living homes to help with their families due to the same fact that many Thai people are now working outside of home more, which is similar to the US.
I remember stories my mother told me about the abuse of power from the Thai government where people could not say anything bad about the King or government for the fear of being killed, jailed or just “disappear”. I never thought I would actually live to see such horrific acts performed in my lifetime. Who would have thought that in the year 2010 everything that my mother told me would reappear again. It seems like Thailand has just gone back in time and de-evolved.
What the Thai people want is a democratic society like the UK or US where they can vote for whom they think will best support their country and not have to worry about being killed or jailed. They want to have a government that is fair and just that they can trust. They do not want the government to change by military coup every time they do not like someone.

What’s up with the Thai courts? They are very quick to issue terrorist warrants – but won’t rule on the $ 8 million illegal campaign contribution to the ruling party? Mmh.
The double standards, the simplicifations and generalisations are shocking and remind me of “Animal Farm” rhetorics. For example, any excuse NOT to hold elections and the crucial timi8ng to avoid elections in November…
Widespread censorship and a hyper active Thought Police – is this the “answer” to a very deep crisis?
Will there ever be a legal review of what went down when the airports were blocked? How come PAD leaders are not facing charges? It has been years and it’s well known that they used rent-a-mob people by handing out yellow shirts and a daily payment.
Closing, I wonder if the king ever pardoned a Thai lese majeste prisoner? Or do only Western offenders get pardoned?

Today, Khaosod news has an article.
It said, “Thai people demand “The Truth.”
There should be an investigation upon what’s the fact.
Who gave order? Who shot? Whose responsibility?
However, in time of crisis and with an abnormal and digress regime like this, Thai people cannot expect to know “The Truth.”

UPDATE:
According to Khao-sod, the CRES has promised to return textbooks to Suthachai today. However, his lawyer said that he was unable to confirm whether it’s true, since the CRES doesn’t allow visiting on weekend. He will have to wait until tomorrow, Monday 31 May, to see Suthachai.

The problem with Thailand is the educational gap between those who run CRES and Professor Sutachai Yimprasert is rather large.
Professor Sutachai has a doctoral degree from England, while Aphisit only has a general education at master degree level from England. Being a full professor of History at Chulalongkorn University, his academic contribution is profound and with high level of scholarship. Obviously, Aphisit does not have sufficient intellectual background to comprehend the classic work of Prof. Sutachai.
As for the military side, it gets even worst. For example, the spoke person of CRES, р╣Др╕Бр╣Ир╣Ир╣Ир╕нр╕╣р╕╣, has no clues whatsoever in the value of Arts and Humanity. Lack of liberal arts educational background, the military is unable to distinguish between dirt and jewel.
р╣Др╕Бр╣Ир╣Ир╣Ир╕нр╕╣р╕╣ and Aphisit are only interested in being popular among women on the Facebook. Thailand has immature and mediocre run the country. As a result, Aphisit’s regime put good brain and good person in jail.

Sutachai has now been released, according to a journalist friend of mine on F/B.
Just checked on B Post breaking news – nothing, as far as I can see – & Nation, which says he was released 20:30 Mon. “He said no charges were filed against him and that he was detained as a precaution to stop him from violating the emergency rule even though he had no involvement nor linkage to the protest.”
