Mickey C; Just check out the Thai PM “Abhisit Vejajiva” Facebook. Look under the “web board ” tab. You will be amazed by what his supporters are talking about and how could the PM let these thing appear on his own FB page.
I try to reflect a bit on why The Regime and the Bangkokian reaction to its full-blown repression is so infuriating.
It’s because “it” – the sort of stuff linked to above – is knowingly undertaken by the “best and the brightest” Bangkok has to offer.
The “double standard” is knowingly undertaken… embraced. The people doing the embracing know they are wrong but forge ahead in that certain knowledge.
This is the worst the human race has to offer, a throw back to the days of the Ramayana… the Ramakien.. when our enemies were dismissed as monkeys and inhumans and their slaughter celebrated. Or to the days of slavery and traffic in “a kind of human that wasn’t human”. It is a conspiracy by a whole society, with one hand washing the other.
Knowingly and unhesitatingly embraced by all… by the “best and the brightest” Bangkok has to offer.

I’ve never ever imagine the situation like this in my life. Soldiers were killing people on the streets. The government keep blocking the websites, shut down radio stations…they trying to conceal the truth. Government’s been trying to make people believe that all ‘red shirts’ are terrorists so they got what they deserve!!!
At the same time, government still hunting down the protesters and anybody who has different political views.
I couldn’t stand watching any free TV or newspaper in Thailand any more. It’s really a nightmare. I desperately hope there will be some way or someone who can stop it.
the former Soviet Union. Ha ha.
Nothing like a good old ‘red’ under the bed hey?
Actually, it was an electrical storm. Lightning, thunder, deluge. My soi is now flooded.
I’d just like to remind everyone Thailand isn’t Burma. It’s absurd to make these comparisons.
Neither is it Thaksin’s good old friend Hun Sen’s Cambodia.
Thank you for a very intensive article. I guess there is not only political crisis at this time. There are also many crisis here especially social crisis. The harmony plan of the government seem to be effective between the government and the yellow shirt (PDD) or pro-government. The CRES is still hunting down the red shirt everywhere. After minute of no confident voting , the TV news reported that the CRES issue more arrest warrant to 3rd red shirt leader generaltion.
Back to social issue, I will give you example of page;
This is the page where the creation of the page, members and admins claim themselve to be king lover by using word “р╕гр╕▒р╕Бр╣Гр╕Щр╕лр╕ер╕зр╕З” (love king) at the end of their name. But the content inside is about enjoy counting red dead body and encourage people to kill red people etc. etc.
“The Criminal Court set the trial’s first hearing on 4 February 2011, even as the Court approved the prosecution’s 14 witnesses and the defense’s 13 witnesses in today’s pre-trial session.”
Looks like she is going to be kept in limbo for some time.
“The first set deals with conventional crimes committed online, like illegal access to data, spamming, and others. It is the second set that has become controversial, particularly Section 14, because not only does it contain offenses already covered by the Thai Penal Code (under Section 112), it also carries harsh penalties. Under Section 14, offenses against national security like lese majeste are included. Critics claim that Thai authorities always invoke violations of lese majeste via Section 14 in dealing with Internet users and Internet service providers (ISPs).”
It’s blocked for me: English version on True (red Thai script message).
I was watching Abhisit’s Saturday briefing to foreign diplomats on TAN about 45min ago. A US delegate had just queried the fact that Thailand habitually uses army forces to deal with demonstrations, whereas other countries use police units. The PM had been giving his spin, when the screen blacked out & a Thai-language message came on to say that there was no signal. My immediate response was ‘censored!”, although, of course it is probably due to an electrical storm. Such is the paranoia induced by current Soviet-style Thai govt behaviour.
I really hope the meeting in question becomes available on DVD. Abhisit’s performance, as well as the carefully-worded questions from diplomats, are classic.
Nich, you write: “Thaksin’s unflinching ambition and will to dominate national life was an unforeseen outcome of a system which, the theory went, should have continued the long tradition of weak, coalition governments.”
Wasn’t the 1997 constitution meant to strengthen parties so that there would be less factionalism and shaky coalitions, the idea being that the government would be more effective? And hence in the wake of Thaksin, the 2007 constitution was designed to weaken parties again so that a strong (elected) leader could not emerge again.
A 25-year-old man is found to have committed suicide by hanging in his detention cell. He had blood coming from his genitals & a wound from a sharp object on his back.
I think Athita was talking about when Chavalit was the deputy minister during PPP time and when he was the PM before the crisis. The Chief of Army have no control over the size of the Army, its the cabinet’s job to do that.
Is 2 trillion baht populist enough?
@ Tarrin
Didn’t Chavalit, as PM then, want to buy submarines?

At least one Democrat – Bangkok’s governor – seems to be talking genuine reconciliation, as indeed he tried to stop the bloodbath :

“Hanging”
I see Thai activists in army custody have been “hanging” themselves in jail. How convenient for the government.

Yes, Pravda , a.k.a True just returns a white page. Of course the page loads just fine via the VPN.

Water shortages in Burma
Thanks for the link to an interesting article Nich.
I know the main focus has been Thailand recently, and for understandable reasons, but it’s good to read about other issues in the region as well.
Out of interest, do you know where the Myanmar Times sits on the media spectrum between New Light of Myanmar and The Irrawaddy?

I’m trying it from Germany so i’m sure this is a URL error, not a blocking problem.

For me (using True) the English version was never blocked; the Thai version (on Fringer’s site) was and is blocked.
