Only better than an African rabble because of US training.

The Thai military has never won a foreign war – except the brief skirmish celebrated at Bangkok’s Victory Monument.
In the only fight it had against Lao’s far smaller army, the Thais lost : watch this portent of the future ?
Thai soldiers in South Vietnam – including Major General Chamlong – hardly proved themselves great victors against the Viet Cong, let alone North Vietnamese regulars.
Well one thing all of above shows – without any doubt – is that Thaksin still stirs immense controversy. Love him or loath him, Thaksin’s still very much alive and kicking.
Sooner or later, Thailand’s elite either come to terms with him – or Thailand breaks apart, and ceases to exist as one country.
Isaarn and Lanna become a new country – backed by China Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia.

Personally I don’t see the succession as being SO complicated in the short-term. The odds are heavily on that the Crown Prince will be nominated by the Privy Council as the next King.
This seems certain for severeal reasons :
1) the only other alternative – Princess Sirindhorn has said she does not want the job, and on every occasion has deferred to her brother.
2) only general Prem would have anything like the power to block the Crown Prince coming to the throne, given all indications Queen Sirikit supports her son becoming King. Prem’s track record makes highly unlikely he would be so disloyal as to oppose the Queen.
Where the sucession becomes much more problematic is how well the Crown Prince performs. Obviously, coming after such a great king as Bumiphol – (and let’s hope Bumiphol lives much longer) – the Crown Prince will have “a hard act to follow”, as the English saying goes. But I’m in the optimist camp.
I think the Crown Prince may well suprise critics, and turn out to be a very good king.
I get the feeling you are right once they manage to get their own kind of people, their placemen like Allawi and Karzi. We’d still have burger and fries with ASSK I’m sure, hopefully without the power corrupting her. Whenever a new ruling class/elite forms, like the military in Burma or the nomenclatura of the old Soviet bloc, the people get short shrift.

It is no use for Govt. denials, the general Thai public don’t believe them either, with the controlled press and very little investigative journalism around this situation will not improve.

It would be in the Malaysian Indian communities’ best interest to support multi-racial politics. Having placed their hopes in MIC/BN has really got them no where.
In general the Malaysian Indian community has done well as Malaysia has provided ample opportunity to anyone who is willing to work hard and demonstrates competence. However, this was achieved at a very high price. Their rights along with all the other minorities have eroded under the supremacist UMNO.
Furthermore, the rentier system that UMNO & BN has introduced into Malaysia is eroding the opportunities and in-fact stifling the entrepreneurial class in Malaysia – which includes many from the Malaysian Indian community.
Neither having the numbers nor the economic power – thus literally no political power as a an ethnic group – its logical that the Malaysian Indian community supports any political party that allow individuals a fair go at life.

One positive thing that has come out of this now substantial Burmese diaspora, whether by choice or driven by circumstances thanks to life under our dear generals, is that we have broadened our horizons far and wide which can only be good for the future. Still it is a disgrace that our universities, whatever passes for higher education these days, have yet to offer courses on Indian, Chinese or SE Asian studies.
Presumably, some of the “petty details” that Mr. Jakropob seems unwilling to actually name include Thaksin’s rampant corruption, his trampling on the 1997 Constitution and both Jakrapob and Thaksin’s blatant lies and incitement to violent revolution during the Songkran riots – and in Jakropob’s case afterwards as well.

The Thai military has fully been mobilized to fight the enemy at the domestic front. As the Bangkok Post reported on September 25, “The Defense ministry has placed all military units on alert to curb acts of lese majeste in cyberspace and on community radio stations.”

These international school pupils, who asked not to be named for fear of being grounded by their parents more than anything else, had recently returned from their national service army training. Being from an international school and with a perfect command of the English language (I am a bit biased here, as I also graduated from that same school), I was told that on one occasion, one of the students had fallen ill and, after taking him back, rather than returning to training, the teacher instead took them to a computer lab where they were told to search the Internet for sites that violated the monarchy and should be censored.
Yes, I was told by a few 18-year olds that they were taken to a secret room in an army training camp where, as part of their military training, they had to scour the Internet for sites and comments in English that had to be censored. Obviously English is still too hard a language for normal Thai recruits to effectively work in.
The room itself was full of posters of His Majesty doing good things, as if to encourage the workers on with their task of defending the Crown. The system had a database with a hard-coded local IP address where entries for sites, forum postings and media such as YouTube clips were listed. Each page had 20 entries and the database was over 100 pages long.
I tried being cheeky. I asked what we had to do if they said bad things about government. The government isn’t the King, right? The Sergeant said that this Government is representing the King and if you insult the government, you are indirectly insulting the King, the first kid told me.
In an hour I found four or five such sites, but only submitted two. The guys were really stupid. The others were more balanced critical comment rather than verbal thrashing, a second kid said.
I’ve got 10 more friends who are able to confirm this story, the first kid told me after I started to wonder if this was all for real.
Of course, they would be nothing sinister in the army compiling a list for forwarding to the MICT to submit to the courts for a court order to block them. However, my young friends had thought of that and told me that some of the links on the database had already been blocked, some as fresh as two days old, which would not have been enough time to go through the official procedure of getting a court order to censor the site.
That said, the young men in front of me seemed to be ambivalent about the need for censorship.
Some of the really stupid ones need to be censored, but the type that present a credible argument need to be shown and we need to balance our reasons as to why we love the King. If you censor it, we can’t defend it, one said.
But who decides on what is right? Whether this website is destructive or whatever? This leads to the whole idea of a big brother government in control of our lives, another argued.
I think society draws the line. With forums, you have posts and comments. People can click on a plus of minus and the Internet will decide for itself what is on view, the first responded.
I am sure these arguments will resonate in the hearts of many, as we have been reluctant to speak our minds and ask why the Emperor has no clothes on. As Jedi Master Yoda once said, truly wonderful, the mind of a child is.

The first I agree with. The second, I’m not sure if they’d hold back once some ‘Contras’ appear on the scene to suit some ‘Reagan’, although this scenario is only ever likely against left wing Marxist governments and never against right wing military dictators, never mind the parallels in the way democracy and human rights get short shrift.

I agree about the sanctions having a palpable effect on the regime, otherwise why would they so badly want them lifted? For one thing, they would dearly love to take their wives shopping to Oxford Street and Manhattan, Harrods and Tiffany’s, rather than to Orchard Road. They’d rather send their offspring to Oxbridge and Ivy League too than to Singapore or Moscow. It’s definitely a thorn in their side. It goes hand in hand with seeking legitimacy through the imminent sham elections to carry on business as usual regardless, and even more business literally their way.

Major trading countries to promote small scale investment in industries where family and small businesses can be invested in sounds great and laudable in theory but it’s probably asking too much. Even in their domestic situation they’d pay lip service to small and middling businesses to win their votes, but they are all too ready to sacrifice this very important sector whenever the economy goes pear-shaped, so that big business, those pillars of capitalism, can fight another day.

Your assertion that anti-neo-colonial self-determining rhetoric from the Junta is responsible for the sanctions, if I may say so, is pretty superficial. Rhetoric begets rhetoric, and actions produce reactions. Relentless repression and widespread and systemic human rights abuses hardly count for rhetoric no matter how the regime justifies itself. The sanctions are limited, Western, symbolic because it is by its very nature anti-business, going against the grain of the sacred tenets of free trade and open markets, and being compelled to put people before profits.

Great post and I agree how expensive food is in Australia and without the quality and authenticity. This is also the same in many other cases such as sushi, chinese food, vietnamese food.
Thais will rather eat sushi or pizza, Chinese will rather eat thai or sushi, Japanese will rather eat thai or pizza, etc. It’s never like the meal back home…
Self Sufficiency is all about efficiency. There is no room for waste in the future as populations rise and economies and people move away from agriculture in greater numbers. All civilisations have been built on effective agricultural practices and none have continued to survive without it

The quickest way to unseat Than Shwe wouldn’t be more burgers, but more bullets…. Not that the American, Austrialian or European governments would ever go that far, so the future of Burma looks like more oppression with burger and fries.
The first I agree with. The second, I’m not sure if they’d hold back once some ‘Contras’ appear on the scene to suit some ‘Reagan’, although this scenario is only ever likely against left wing Marxist governments and never against right wing military dictators, never mind the parallels in the way democracy and human rights get short shrift.

I agree about the sanctions having a palpable effect on the regime, otherwise why would they so badly want them lifted? For one thing, they would dearly love to take their wives shopping to Oxford Street and Manhattan, Harrods and Tiffany’s, rather than to Orchard Road. They’d rather send their offspring to Oxbridge and Ivy League too than to Singapore or Moscow. It’s definitely a thorn in their side. It goes hand in hand with seeking legitimacy through the imminent sham elections to carry on business as usual regardless, and even more business literally their way.

Major trading countries to promote small scale investment in industries where family and small businesses can be invested in sounds great and laudable in theory but it’s probably asking too much. Even in their domestic situation they’d pay lip service to small and middling businesses to win their votes, but they are all too ready to sacrifice this very important sector whenever the economy goes pear-shaped, so that big business, those pillars of capitalism, can fight another day.

Jetstar reminds me of a recent proposal by the Burma Campaign in London to stop student visas allegedly because only those who have connections to the junta can afford to come. Some of them may be related though not close family, but a blanket ban?!

Your assertion that anti-neo-colonial self-determining rhetoric from the Junta is responsible for the sanctions, if I may say so, is pretty superficial. Rhetoric begets rhetoric, and actions produce reactions. Relentless repression and widespread and systemic human rights abuses hardly count for rhetoric no matter how the regime justifies itself. The sanctions are limited, Western, symbolic because it is by its very nature anti-business, going against the grain of the sacred tenets of free trade and open markets, and being compelled to put people before profits.

Great post and I agree how expensive food is in Australia and without the quality and authenticity. This is also the same in many other cases such as sushi, chinese food, vietnamese food.
Thais will rather eat sushi or pizza, Chinese will rather eat thai or sushi, Japanese will rather eat thai or pizza, etc. It’s never like the meal back home…
