This, if true then puts a very bad spotlight on Joko himself for allowing such attempt to happen in the first place. Even if some comments have been raised about the validity of this article, if you’ve been following Indonesian politics since independence, it’s full of money politics from Soekarno until now. Who knows that perhaps Megawati herself benefited from selling Indosat? Now, if you put that into the equation, Buehler article actually makes some sense. There are lots of loopholes for fraud in Indonesian politics.

Lobbying = Money = Indonesian politics.

The burden of history weighs heavily on this seemingly fragile woman’s graceful shoulders. She herself has characterised the fight as the Burmese people’s second struggle for independence. And it is nothing less than a Herculean task to fully dismantle the machinery of dictatorship which she must.

For all her faults she is a woman of destny and her people showed no hesitation in choosing her over her big brother from the start much to his chagrin. Burmese don’t care for premogeniture nor doubt a woman’s ability to lead the nation.

May the force be with her.

Obama and Jokowi meets 3 times a year at G20, APEC, and East Asia summits. Does Jokowi really needs a lobbying service? Yeah.. I don’t think so.

Interesting analysis, Nicholas! Especially with regard to ASSK. Probably the best she can do in case of a victory for NLD is follow Sonia Gandhi: stoop to conquer and remain the power behind the throne. From what I gather that is exactly her strategy.

Maybe the Indonesian Embassy in Canberra can provide a response.

сА╜Quote – “The NCA was an extraordinary effort – all parties invested a great deal of political capital, physical and intellectual resources.” – end quote.

Not so sure about writer’s assertion but some facts below may reflect the reality of the peace process.

    (1) Ceasefire process doesn’t has any input from Legislation entities. (Not even has any meaningful discussion).

    (2) The peace process was funded by crony businessmen, foreign peace funds and other sources but not even one cent from government/country’s coffer.

    (3) As always, the untold aim of Burmese dominated government is like “lay your arms down, then we will spare your lives and may grant a few business opportunities to survive for a short term. don’t expect further than that”.

Hope these facts will shine some light on peace process in Burma.
Going into details won’t help much for the readers to understand better.

‘…spending taxpayer money for work the Indonesian embassy could have done.’

Don’t you mean ‘Scamming taxpayer money the Indonesian Embassy could have scammed.’

Looks like some rentier in KBRI Washington is peeved because they had their introduction fee scam taken away. Sob, tiny violins.

Don’t worry guys there’s still the car and Wisma scams.

This is how markups were done during Retno’s time in Australia. Dubes/Konsul approaching retirement needs golden handshake. Conspiring with an understanding and patriotic Chinese Indonesian businessperson, a property is bought for a new Wisma, to accommodate poor wayfaring pilgrims from Jakarta. A property worth $1 million is bought for $4 million and after ‘setoran’ to Dubes/Konsul, remainder is divided between appreciative staff. By the time real estate agents and home owners on the street begin to complain about price manipulation, our patriot from Pejambon is kicking back with a Martini in the Bahamas.

    agreed.
if such USD80k did not exsist, then why neither the US hor Indonesian govt question the so called “consultant”?

in retrospect, the Q&A sessions during the Brookings Institute forum clearly shows the slight “disrespect” of the Indonesian Foreign Minister when at the end of her response to answer on behalf of President Joko Widodo she mentioned “is it enough Mr President?”…
