“Multiculturalists are so fundamentalist because they do not embrace true fundamentalist fundamentalists.” – huh?

“them two should get in bed together to breed peace babies?” – double huh?

    i would laugh…at you.

  2. No bull says:

You must have made a mistake. Many ang moh historians write that CPM was crushed by mid 1950s and escaped to Malaya so that Emergency ended by 1960. So CPM members couldn’t have committed violent acts through the 1970s. They had a commenmoration in 1974 across both Malaysia and Singapore with booty trap bombs but most exploded without casualties. If I remember correctly only one casualty was caused. Whatever it is, it is a far cry from the fighting in Malaysian jungles.

  3. No bull says:

You don’t have to be insulting please. Many ang moh historians side the Barisan and the Leftists and pin blame squarely on Lee Kuan Yew instead.

  4. No bull says:

Without agitations by the Leftists, you think the British would have released Singapore unconditionally? Think about it, British held on to Hong Kong until the very last minute. But then again, it may well have been better for us because then we wouldn’t have had to live under the iron rule of the PAP.

  5. No bull says:

I disagree with this evaluation. Chin Peng was having war, internal war with the British and then the Malaysians. The archives will show that the British were even more brutal, holding severed heads of MCP as trohpies for the record.

But coming back to Singapore, MCP’s militant activities in Singapore were crushed several times and by 1955 was crippled so much so the Emergency was lifted by 1960. From then on, MCP strength in Singapore was very small and completely constitutional. The militant MCP all escaped to Malaysia. You cannot transplant MCP’s militant activities in Malaysia to Singapore and call it a brutality against Singaporeans. That’s just not being truthful.

[Not when you haven’t divulged your own personal history. Now can we get back to the subject at hand or shall we continue with this mindless mudslinging so characteristic of Lee’s communist opponents?]

I am unimpressed with your displeasure with SDP. In the first place, many of the comments here are half baked and without basis.

I haven’t made any claims, so there is no need to substantiate anything. You however have made some claims so unless you substantiate what you say, people can put doubt into what you say.

The mudslinging is most characteristic of Lee Kuan Yew himself. Lee Kuan Yew is the master of mudslinging. You look through all the records. The bulk of he mudslinging was done by Lee.

Well, Obama is not just a lousy golf player!

  9. Peter Cohen says:

I think Prime Minister Najib received several honourary doctorates, perhaps one (or more) from Australia, and definitely one from Nazarbayev State University in Kazakhstan. He is putting those honours to good purpose by playing under par with president Obama in Honolulu, while Malaysia is currently under water. Yes, I am sure ANU is a “rational” being, just like the Land of Borat.

  10. Alex Wong says:

And just in case you’re wondering about MY personal history, I’ll tell you this much. I’m a Singaporean who has been through 3 general elections and voted twice. Once for the PAP and once against. I’m what you will describe as a swing voter who judges the candidate on his track record of policy, ethics and behavior. I can also tell you that I remain truly and thoroughly unimpressed with the SDP and so long as Teo and her ilk continue to revise history rather than deal with real issues that Singaporeans face on a daily basis, then they will certainly not get my vote.

    “Progressive Country”……

Prime Minister Najib is under par, while Malaysia is under water:

  13. Kaen Phet says:

@CB – I’m not in any way a marxist, but I think the notion of ‘false consciousness’ may be worth invoking here. ‘Modern Isarn views Ch…. as (blah, blah)’ On what basis? Anything at all to do with the Thai ‘education system’ and the broader socialisation process?

Incidentally, I don’t want to denigrate R5 – he was the most remarkable monarch of the present dynasty in many ways. We just need to look at such figures in more than two dimensions.

I have spent plenty of time in the NE (various provinces), my wife is from Isarn, and I don’t live in Bkk. Not sure what my Bangkok ruling class “educated’ view is. That’s certainly not the sort of education I had (thank god!).

I am curious, however, how you, CB, have be able to – as it were – ‘take the pulse’ of the’ people’ of Isarn (a substantial number of individuals), discerned ‘their’ views before presenting your distilled findings to those of us reading this post?

I think we should leave this as – ‘end of story’

  14. Chris Beale says:

Kaen Phet – you can call me “inane”, you can call me a “bufallo”. But I’ll bet London to a brick, my views are a lot more accurate of how today’s korn tammada Isaarn view Chulalongkorn than your Krung Thep-centric, Bangkok ruling class “educated” view of how Isaarn is SUPPOSED to view their liberator Chulalongkorn. Modern Isaarn views Chualongkorn as their freedom fighter – NOT YOUR “enlightened” despot.

[Why is my personal history important to you ? To make a political point or to honour the death of a man, whom you did not know, which is equally disingenuous.]

From you answer, I can tell whether you are trying to pull a fast one or whether or not what you say is of relevance here. Have I called your bluff?

  16. Ohn says:

Generous take. How does one, any one fundamentalist in any way or not go half way to this: KORAN commands to kill infidels:

Allah is an enemy to unbelievers. – Sura 2:98

On unbelievers is the curse of Allah. – Sura 2:161

Slay them wherever ye find them and drive them out of the places whence they drove you out, for persecution is worse than slaughter. – 2:191

Fight against them until idolatry is no more and Allah’s religion reigns supreme. (different translation: ) Fight them until there is no persecution and the religion is God’s entirely. – Sura 2:193 and 8:39

Fighting is obligatory for you, much as you dislike it. – 2:216
(different translation: ) Prescribed for you is fighting, though it is hateful to you.

    ….. martyrs…. Enter heaven – Surah 3:140-43

All very well not to call fat people not fat to spare their delicate little mind to have another hundreds of millions joining the camp and now putting out red carpet (OK, half red carpet or pink carpet) to hungry tigers.

This weird and pathetic pseudo-liberalism business at one point becomes total BS.

There are majority Muslims willing and able to live with others. Including the Jews. And there are NAZI’s. One deserve respect and warmth, the other sound condemnation, nothing bxxxxdy half way.

  17. Kaen Phet says:

@ C Beale – ‘simple-minded’? Such a view brings the old expression ‘pot calling the kettle black’ to mind. By and large your comments on NM tend to verge on the inane. Feel free to spout them, but don’t expect anyone with an understanding of Thai history (beyond the official narrative) to take them seriously.

  18. tocharian says:

    I apologise!
I should know better because, even though my dream is to live like a “noble savage”, I do live in a “progressive” country that believes in “multi-culturalism” (just like Australia) and so as a “good citizen” I try my best to follow certain societal norms (not absolutely pheromonic yet!) like saying “Happy Holidays” instead of “Merry Christmas”, at least in public discourse. All in the name of ├╝ber-liberal-faux-political-correctness, another -ism, I suppose!

  19. Peter Cohen says:

    Tocharian,

Merry Christmas has been banned in Malaysia, don’t you know ?

    Happy Holidays !

P/S HUMANS are insecure, all other living species aren’t.
