Joe – if you entered on a Thai passport : that was asking for trouble. If you entered on an American passport, then the Thais should simply have refused you entry, and deported you, if they were so offended. It’s an outrageous assault on democracy, if we can not publish whatever we want, within our own countries. Thanks for bringing this issue to light.

  3. bogus says:

Can only agree with AJ Somsak.

Cod’s work is denigrating both Prachatai and New Mandala and I have no idea why both are publishing his badly written reactionary spiel.

He is not saying anything new, anything relevant or anything smart.

    It’s pretentious garbage.

  4. bogus says:

No, what it draws into question is why an anonymous person would want to attempt to smear a released political prisoner.

You have presented not one shred of evidence to support anything you’ve claimed or stated here and not one fact yet you expect Joe to prove his innocence against your bogus, anonymous and wholly false claims.

You’re not a Thai judge or a Thai Democrat Party politician are you?

    Cod:Definition
1)Brit and Irish; slang a hoax or trick
2)Irish slang a fraud; hoaxer he’s an old cod
    3) Archaic – The scrotum.
    4) Obsolete – A bag.

Good to see the Cos’s parents exhibit a sense of humour.
What condescending, selective hi-so propaganda this piece is, and to what purpose pray? Creative writing? Whiling away the minuted before the night clubs open?
    Let them eat cake….

we will never know what really happened.

whatever/whoever did it and for whatever reason, thais dislike dealing with/facing negative matters (“Land Of Smiles”). too often it’s the fault of the others, the weather, the road, the ghosts or bad karma anyway so why bother?

on top of that there’s little to zero critical thinking in thailand. people never learned it so we can’t blame them. whatever some high-ranked guy in a decorated suit tells on the telly = truth/fact. case closed.

the 0,05% who is able to do critical thinking will never bother to meditate about a fire in some remote karen/karenni refugee camp (non-thai = none of my problems = non-event = р╣Др╕бр╣Ир╕кр╕Щр╕╕р╕Б or р╣Ар╕Ър╕╖р╣Ир╕н). this attitude keeps their minds substantially more healthy compared to the average westerners “nerves”.

  7. American Citizen says:

    Joe,
Glad you made it out of the Thai Gulags, continue to Fight against Article 112 and perhaps, someday, Thailand’s people will abandon the vestiges of the Feudal past (present) and join the 21st Century respecting freedom, divergent thought; and perhaps improve the general inhuman conditions in its Prisons.

    Welcome Home.

  8. Mujahed says:

I agree with you Rasool. Though BN was good till 2008, Malaysia needs an PKR government who will rule with policies rather rule with politics.

  9. Rasool says:

This time it’s going to be a tight Election between BN and PKR, it’s time to make a decision to stick with the competent government or a government who offers a democracy and responsible policies. Forecasts for GE-13 suggest that a charismatic leader like Anwar Ibrahim will get through this with clear margin.

  10. Moe Aung says:

    toch,

Your China fixation is nearly as bad as plan B’s careless useless west fixation, and for that matter Burmese numerology fixation which I agree is real but mostly the number 9, good for most but bad in Upper Burma where the Koe Myo Shin nat (Lord of the nine townships) presides so you never travel in a party of nine and would pick up a stone, call it Mr Stone to make it ten. Ten or bu (null and void)on the other hand in general you avoid and go for nine instead especially for car number plates all numerals added up

  11. stylo says:

Whatever party runs the government should be capable of addressing the needs the common people.

  12. stylo says:

After a long time there is such as close fight to be seen

  13. stylo says:

PKR focus on the community’s particular needs, on raising incomes irrespective of race.. This is one of the major reason for which I would give my vote to PKR in GE13

  14. Amsyar Ams says:

Anwar Ibharim deserves one chance he has done so much for the country in past… Let vote for PKR

  15. stylo says:

If we need our finical situations to be uplifted Anwar Ibharim-PKR party needs complete support from all…instead of getting sold out in the hands of BN

  16. Jack Martin says:

My vote is with Anwar Ibharam-PKR. As history shows he is a true man and a true leader..

  17. CJ Hinke says:

I have rarely seen such shallow comments to any article in these pages. Have we become this dumbed-down?!?

For the record, Joe was changed ONLY for HYPERLINKING to Thai translated portions of TKNS under the Computer Crimes Act. As he pled guilty, the issue of the legality or criminality of linking has never been addressed in Thai courts.

However, what Joe was SENTENCED for are thought crimes. The judges stated that Joe had TRANSLATED TKNS into Thai.

Joe never said he had, to my knowledge, nor does he in this interview. There are at least several partial and complete TKNS translations in multiple locations for view and download; just search р╕кр╕зр╕гр╕гр╕Др╣Мр╣Гр╕Щр╕нр╕Б р╕Щр╕гр╕Бр╣Гр╕Щр╣Гр╕И.

TKNS in English and in its Thai translations in no way fit the legal definition of threaten, insult, demean of Article 112 although the book is officially banned under the Printing Act. Although TKNS has been banned and thus it is illegal to sell or give away, its Thai translations nave NEVER been banned.

Joe was sentenced for a ‘crime’ no one has proven he committed and that may not even be a crime!

  18. Alex says:

Somchai is very honest and he is right. I have been to Thailand manytimes and can even speak Thai well. Thai will worship anything. I saw the wooden penis put in the restaurants to worship. I don’t know what is is supposed to be good for. Maybe good business?
