David Streckfuss has written an important article titled “The law is the problem”. Both Prachatai and Bangkok Pundit have it in full. It was inspired by The Nation‘s Thanong Khantong and his attempts to defend the lese majeste law.

The note on the end says it all: “The Nation refused to publish this rebuttal”.

Thais and others are having a debate about lese majeste. It is, however, becoming increasingly clear that it will only happen (safely? openly?) outside the country. Perhaps Prime Minister Abhisit will use his Saturday morning on St. Giles to forcefully put his side of the argument. I do hope so. Oxford, and a world well beyond its walls, will be listening closely.
