  1. Hi Joshua,

You brought out a very important point. Thank you for that.

By privilege, I definitely did not mean socio-political or legal advantage. By privilege, I meant that perhaps, Allah has blessed Muslims with a revelation of Himself and His wisdom. And Muslims are called to use that Wisdom for the good of all mankind. That is what i meant as privilege.

In every other aspect, all mankind are equal.

Thank you for enlightening me that though the prophet rendered Muslims superior in terms of their piety, that did not translate into superiority in public policies or race. Glad to hear that.

Pluralism is a de facto leitmotif of liberalism. Use your full name if anonymity pisses you off.

    Hi Fadhli #8,

RPK cannot be trusted ? Hmmm….not so sure about that. His website gets about 10 million hits.

I mentioned in a discussion sometime ago that we all have our own realities or perceptions.

And for you, PEKIDA is a charitable organisation. For others its the militant wing of UMNO.

Is Biro Tata Negara a government department or a racial indoctrination agency?

Is the Malaysian mainstream media an independent enterprise or a branch of the government’s communication department?

There is more..but I leave you with some expensively manufactured perceptions.
    – Prime Minister Najib Razak is the leader of the Global Movement of Moderates
    – Malaysia is a model for religious and racial tolerance.

By the way, do you agree with parts of the report that uses government statistics.

Danielle has posed a good question on superiority of Muslims and Joshua has answered quite convincingly that superiority is based on spirituality and not in the physiological sense.

May I add that, in whatever sense, race superiority could not be acceptable as Muslims could be of any race and it would be in conflict for Malay Muslims to claim superiority over other Non-Malay Muslims.

The only sensible position is to embrace humanity as what the Christians have been doing with a high degree of success and they are at peace with God and man. For one cannot claim to be Godly when one does not treat others equally.

    re: comments
This banter of ‘right and wrong’, even the shallow (if not oriental-istic) and sweeping note on ‘radical Islam’, the paternalism to judge that the people are “…cloaked… or their eyes and ears are rendered ineffective” (this is rich, coming from us cadre of unelected, all-knowing, all seeing, and largely anonymous online pundits to judge what is best for ‘the people’), –makes me uncomfortable.

As for my unsolicited two cents: I do not see in the above a cry against “lese majeste fundamentalism”, as would have it ‘Bunny’–What I see here is a load of liberal fundamentalism (‘monism’…to drop this oh-so-contentious ‘F’ word) and I think the majority of the commentators here would benefit from some ontological plurification (pluralism).

    Thanks,
    R.

We got caught up in the celebrations near Khao San road last night.
I just read Amsterdam’s piece today and the many responses and I was very impressed by D.N’s comments. I just happened today to be researching the land deal and came across this other blog which is well worth looking at.
    http://slimdogsworld.blogspot.com/2009/06/fidf-land-sales.html

It would appear that the land was sold for a total of 2.43 billion baht including 772 million from Pojaman .
It appears that all 4 plots were re-sold at auction on the 17th August 2011 to Supalai PLC at a price of Baht 1,815,000,000.
thus leaving a shortfall/loss seemingly of 615 million baht.
It is clear that Pojaman paid a fair price and also that no laws were broken. The FIDF were happy that they got more than their own valuation.

I spent “Father’s Day” scrubbing down a friend’s house in Northern Suburbs. The house had previously been under as much as 1.5 meters for about 5 weeks, but is now dry.

When we arrived in the morning — my friends’ first look at their house since the evacuation in early November — seeing the dirt, stains, rubbish piled in the street and the empty, unlived-in look, one of them commented that it looked very much like the post-apocalyptic TV series from the US, The Walking Dead. I had to admit, she had a point.

It’s a very new townhouse in a moo-bahn that is constructed primarily of pre-fab concrete, and the actual damage from the flood water was amazingly light. After a full day of cleaning, all it really needs now is a fresh coat of paint.

Now all I really need is a long hot shower.

  9. Tarrin says:

Reading VichaiN – 7 post made me really curious, any other PM, other than Karun of cause, to be made like he/she is responsible for the fail flood prevention like Karun?

  10. Joshua Woo says:

    Hi Danielle Jusof #1,

Thank you for your considered comment. May I converse with you further.

    You argued that from this:

“I can say that since Allah is the exclusive God of Muslims and those who are loyal to Allah are then superior to those who are not, Muslims are then superior to non-Muslims, since they are the exclusive believers of Allah, to whom they are loyal and pious.”

    To conclude this:

“Superiority makes one greater than the other. Blessedness makes one at privilege than the other purely by the grace of Allah, a privilege to which Muslims should not cling to, in order to demand superiority, but a privilege that Muslims should use to point the way back to Allah.”

If by “privilege” you mean piety towards Allah, then yes it is a privilege for Muslims to use their pious devotion to point the way back to Allah. You are correct to come to that conclusion.

However, if by “privilege” you mean or connote soci0-political or legal privilege or status, then it is a non-sequitur. For the article has pointed out that even though Muslims in the time of the Prophet to the immediate caliphate were superior in their piety towards Allah, it did not followed that they are privileged in term of public policy.

    Noting Albert’s comment 68 :

“Thus, it would have been almost impossible, even in Thailand, to prosecute Thaksin for his role in War on Drugs, without involving Prem, the King, some Generals, etc.”

Thaksin , to his credit, has apologized for his being over zealous in his War on Drugs, and being too much the policeman.
This is unusual as he no nearly past his prime. It is perhaps more usual for the very elderly to contemplate their misdeeds and excesses and admit them in the hope of some forgiveness. I have in mind Robert MacNamara, one time US Secretary of Defense, who featured in a film The Fog of War and in his last years became a passionate advocate of nuclear disarmament.

None of the others in the list have expressed any regrets and the chance that was there today was passed up.

  12. Ricky says:

    Dear Battle

Thank you for responding to my longstanding question about why did Thaksin not appeal. ( Apologies for the typos)

I find it interesting you chose this auspicious day to explain the situation. I wonder if you were waiting in the hope of hearing some words about justice this morning? Well you and I , both disappointed.

The punishment meted out to Thaksin has surely been extreme as it includes stealing government from him and forcing him into a long exile and yet the yellows are still baying for blood.

I wish he would just land here in ChiangMai and we would have a crowd to rival the “Joyous Multitudes” seen on TV this morning.

  13. Alessio says:

Comment #1 fits weel into the ultra-Nationalist and sometimes quasi-racist mainstream ideology of Thainess. In this case, as often happens, while completly ignoring the matter of the issue the commentator tries to:
    1) construct Thailand as an exceptional/special country;
    2) build a cultural difference between 2 constructed categories: non-nationals and nationals (it is unclear here if the categories are cultural or genetic);
    3) consider non-nationals unable to understand national issues as well as all nationals supposedly do;
    4) suggest to the interlocutor to take back his pre-determined social role: temporary guest, visitor, tourist, consumer who must appreciate the “amazing” “Thai style” but does not deserve full freedom of expression.

  15. Vichai N says:

Hey Jayzee I think we’re nearly neighbors.

My in-laws reside at Muang Ake village and yesterday I was the good son in-law making an inspection of my good parents flood devastated home.

Waters still waist-deep, I had to pay Baht 500 for a 30 minute boat ride. The ground floor was totallly wasted, every single furniture unusable, molds all over, the stink and smell of diseased waters almost made me faint (despite the goggles and the mask I already wore for protection) . . . and yes, water-defaced personal valuables (family photos and similar) that were heart-breaking.

On the way out I saw the newly raised freshly painted banner reading: “Thank you Khun Karun for getting rid of the floods”.

Nice touch that PT party MP. When I mentioned this to my in-laws, he mentioned that MP Karun could probably get shot or lynched, if he ever visited Muang Ake village.

  16. Kathy says:

Our outward manifestation of our differences is a necessary precondition to the physical realm. However the outward (race)does not affect the Inward( the spirit). Allah decreed in the Koran that He created different races. Our duty as vicegerents on this earth is to follow in footsteps of our Spiritual leaders of the past, the Chosen Ones of Allah, be it Prophet Abraham, Prophet Moses, Prophet Jesus or Prophet Muhammad ( pbu them all) and that is to serve all of mankind and do good deeds inspite of our differences outwardly ,especially so.

  17. Kathy says:

I wish to state the defining whether one is moslem or not is in the realm of the Divine.
Whilst we are guided by the Koran on our Syariah ( the law) we also need to seek our tariqah ( the way) and finally with the Mercy of Allah the haqiqat ( the Truth) which only if we are sincerely seeking Him, sincerely annihilating this world, sincere in actions, sincere in thoughts, sincere in service to all mankind would we even begin to be considered in the way to the ultimate Truth.

Whether we are Islam or complete in our Islam is not determined by what we utter but by what Allah decrees.

  18. Buttle says:

Unfortunately there was no appeal process available and the IIRC (the court) refused to hold another session to consider new evidence that Thaksin’s lawyers submitted.
Thaksin had left the country and broken his bail conditions. He didn’t return. Thus he became known as the “fugitive” and latterly the “criminal.”

  19. I found this article very interesting. The prophet apparently was racially impartial, and taught that no one race is superior to another. Using this argument, the author attempts to challenge the Malay superiority in Malaysia.

However, allow me to quote the author himself. He said that,

“No race or genealogical lineage is declared superior or should be favoured than others. The only superiority is that of piety, between those who are loyal to Allah and those who are not.”

Using this argument, I can say that since Allah is the exclusive God of Muslims and those who are loyal to Allah are then superior to those who are not, Muslims are then superior to non-Muslims, since they are the exclusive believers of Allah, to whom they are loyal and pious.

Since all Malays are Muslims, and majority of non-Malays are non-Muslims, do we not come to the same point that the Malays are indeed superior to the non-Malays due to their Muslim superiority. Doesn’t this argument also mean that realistically speaking, the so-called equality between all mankind does not really exist?

The prophet did not believe in racial inequality. However, since superiority based on religious belief was still advocated, inequality and bias was still encouraged, just from a different aspect.

Did Allah make the Muslims superior or blessed? Superiority makes one greater than the other. Blessedness makes one at privilege than the other purely by the grace of Allah, a privilege to which Muslims should not cling to, in order to demand superiority, but a privilege that Muslims should use to point the way back to Allah.

  20. I had not brought the matter up clearly in the past, if I recall correctly, but this constant barrage of loyalty and inherent grace and so on is not merely one of lauding another but of lauding oneself – that is, Thais have long believed (and been falsely led to believe and to falsely lead others to believe) that their inherent “culture” or “nature” or “Thainess” is itself semi-divine, a gift from God that makes them special and unique in ways that can not be understood by anyone other than a loyal Thai. The qualities of the monarchy are, in many senses, imbued by Thais to place themselves upon a pedestal of self-wonder and self-aggrandizement. As Nick and others have observed, this is not an incidental characteristic of state overlording of Thai society but an intentional, ruthless and merciless trait by control freaks who do not have any inclination to compromise.
