What Teo did was silly. As a Malaysian, she should have known to wear a scarf in the surau. It doesn’t take much and it would reflect badly on UMNO, if they decide to make an issue of the visit.
As for the Perkasa rubbish, I believe UMNO (Najib included) is using them as a mad barking dog to maintain a sense of tension amongst the “always fearful” non malays fence sitters. It would have been a simple thing for Najib’s administration to simply say “that’s a silly thing and is not IMalaysia” to any or all of Perkasa rantings. There really is not a need to respond in any other way.
The actual support for Perkasa is minimal, just loud, even with Mahathir’s backing. Mahathir himself does not have the backing that he and his cronies want to make out to have. Of course he does have support from the “govt” own press, as Najib has not gotten rid of all Mahathir’s men in positions yet. That explains all the press that Mahathir and Perkasa get.
The level of support Mahathir actually has can be judged from the lost of UMNO youth chief position by his son to Khairy. Despite all of mahathir machinations, Khairy still beat his son convincingly.
First of all why the caretaker of that place advice her that it forbidden for non muslim to enter. Why is all this silly comment of taking court action on her.It look stupid to the whole world.
Maratjp: In all sincerity, I don’t really see your point, which seems pretty reductionist. If journalists followed what appear to be your guidelines – stay within government lines, or at least safely out of the way – we would have no photos of the men in black on April 10, or of the people tossing firebombs into CentralWorld. The existence of such photos (and video) adds useful – nay, essential – information about the whole affair. If these folks were not out there doing it (and taking the same risks as the people who were hurt or killed), then they wouldn’t exist. Getting ticked off about someone’s sense, or lack thereof, for wearing a bandanna strikes me as churlish — it has nothing to do with their work, really.
My friend tells me that Teo Nie Cheng was constantly asking, “Is this okay?” to the religious figures at the Surau, and if true it means that despite all her carefulness, it was a bomb ready to explode.
What Malaysia needs are leaders who can navigate the cultural eddies and flows more deftly.
You describe the Pheua Thai performance in the Bangkok local elections as dismal. How does their vote this time compared with their vote in the last round of local elections?
I’m under the impression after reading Monday’s Bangkok Post that the vote in numbers is down for all parties on a very low turnout. As far as seats goes in both city assembly and district I’m also under the impression that the pro-Thaksin party has lost out considerably. I do stand to be corrected though as this is maybe a loss against their expectations rather than the last election. I do seem to remember a time when the TRT did quite well in Bangkok. The Monday edition of the Post did have some nice graphics in it. Here’s an example of how the various parts of Bangkok voted.
So seeing how poorly the NPP did I wonder if the UDD leadership will take notice and tie themselves even closer to Chalerm’s and Chavalit’s Pheua Thai, although from the sound of Khun Plodprasop he would prefer to put some distance between themselves and the UDD.
From the statistics, I don’t see any significant impact of the third party: New Politics Party. I think it’s really the race of the two parties: Puea Thai and the Democract. Frankly speaking, there’s no future for the third party in Bangkok politics. Here’s the result of the districts won by Puea Thai Party.
“And Nick, I hope you also include a bit of the view from the young soldiers who were thrust into this crap. They are victims too. I looked at the protesters and these soldiers as one and the same.”
I definitely will do that, both in text and images. 🙂
Yes, Les. As Nich and I wrote in our recent Inside Story article:
It is unlikely that their New Politics Party would attract mass electoral support, but it may steal enough votes from the Democrats to deliver a swag of new parliamentary seats to the opposition. New Politics considered running in the recent Bangkok by-election, but had second thoughts. If it had run, it is very likely the Democrat vote would have been reduced enough to put the imprisoned red-shirt leader into parliament. In Thailand’s first-past-the-post election system, Abhisit simply cannot afford to have his electoral base undercut by the yellow-shirt forces who helped bring him to power.
You describe the Pheua Thai performance in the Bangkok local elections as dismal. How does their vote this time compared with their vote in the last round of local elections?

But after living so many years in Australia and realising what a normal civilized society here is my thinkings have changed completely.
One thing I realized now is that a normal society needs to have a right balance of right-wing and left-wing ideology as the rightist dominance is bad for the social justice while the leftist dominance will destroy the prosperity.
In my opinion, Australia ruled alternatively by the conservatives and the socialists is the perfect example of that normal, balanced society.
IMHO Burma and Thailand are on the opposite extremes as Burmese politics is completely dominated by the leftists while Thai society is ruled by the right wingers. And both societies are paying heavily now for that.
I also believe strong patriotic-nationalism is racism and fascism combined.
At least I am glad that you and I are not trying to kill each other like our fathers had done in their prime, assuming you father must be a politically active too basing on your strong stance on Burma.
Burmese politicians and the army should just talk, negotiate, and compromise as there are enough killings already. And I sincerely believe that I am contributing something towards that goal.

The newcomer deplored voters’ indifference as the main cause of its failure, but on the other hand, the NPP’s presence in the contest was enough to hand three seats to Pheu Thai, which narrowly beat Democrat candidates in the respective constituencies.
Again not the data you are looking for, but also in today’s Nation.
Pheu Thai Party deputy leader Plodprasop Surassawadi Monday admitted that his party had lost in the Bangkok city council and district council elections partly because of the red-shirt protesters.
“We should not deny this repercussion. Bangkokians always think about the burning of the city,” Plodprasop said.
The 1958 cover of Myawaddy on the right is almost certainly that of a beauty contest winner, not sure if it was Miss Burma Ma Sein Aye. These pageants started at the end of WWII and were later state sponsored. Myawaddy was the organ and propaganda outlet of the Tatmadaw, joined by Thwaythauk (blood brother) and Nawaday (another warrior poet) magazines later on. The Burmese army has always been in to business and propaganda, even before its dead hand secured a stranglehold on the country.
If you couldn’t find Playboy or Mayfair, you could be sure to get them from your army friends in those days.
‘Victorian values’ afflict us periodically just as in Britain when the politicians say ‘back to basics’ or ‘family values’. Still, Burma is a hot country and you don’t really want to look too hot without inviting trouble. At least a good thanaka cover on the bare skin wouldn’t go amiss.
Perhaps congratulations are in order. Keep it up by all means.
Best out in the open, and thanks for the chance of a counter-argument to both you and NM. NM is also right in giving you a platform even if it chose to relax on its usual standards of scholarly discourse and contributions. Comment is free, facts are sacred (CP Scott).
If I were Thai and had anything to do with it, I would never ban the film “The King and I”. I would definitely want my own people to see how they got portrayed, stereotyped and patronised.
“your position statement mentions “top Thai generals and foreign policy officials” as though they were decision-makers. When in fact their opinions remained only opinions, it didn’t carry weigh into the decision making process. They simply were not decision makers… Thai opinions were not important, but rather that decisions were made by the Great Powers”
Sorry, Suzie, but that’s just not true. But thank you for proving my earlier point about the tendency to massively over-exaggerate the agency of the great powers, while under-estimating the agency of smaller, weaker states and their crucial role in constituting imperial rule.

Burma in Limbo, Part 2
Moe Aung,
Once I was as an extreme-nationalist as you are and maybe even more. I was violent and bloodthirsty and I ‘d done horrible things I am now not proud of at all.
BTW in my definition any nationalist who use violence to achieve his goal is an extreme-nationalist.
One thing still haunting me is all the violent race riots back in Rangoon while we were young and nationalist and religious fervor was driven to extreme by the likes of Ne Win and others.

“We should not deny this repercussion. Bangkokians always think about the burning of the city,” Plodprasop said.
Burmese women’s legs in the media
The 1958 cover of Myawaddy on the right is almost certainly that of a beauty contest winner, not sure if it was Miss Burma Ma Sein Aye. These pageants started at the end of WWII and were later state sponsored. Myawaddy was the organ and propaganda outlet of the Tatmadaw, joined by Thwaythauk (blood brother) and Nawaday (another warrior poet) magazines later on. An alternative view of the Duch verdict in Cambodia
