Phum jai Thai party said, “We admitted that we had never thought we would lose this election. We will collect data to analyze what the problem is, so that we could prevent and find a new strategy in the future. There are 5 reasons that led to our defeat.
1. Police Lt.Col Thaksin’s phone-in
2. More Red Shirt Movement’s activity in the area
3. There are leaflets attacking Newin Chidchob
4. The party had short period of time in the area
5. One of the Red Shirt Movement’s leader, Jatiporn Prompan, had given a speech attacking Newin Chidchob in the Parliament.
Also, Newin Chidchob’s father, Mr.Chai, the House Speaker, implied that the presence of General Panlop Pinmanee, former deputy director of the Internal Security; Major General Kattiya Sawatdiphon, Army’s Special Expert; Major General Manoonkrit Roopkajorn, Former President of the Upper House, has caused the defeat of Phum jai Thai party.

great article. but regarding your concluding sentence – i believe the tea leaves in question are of the pickled variety (laphet htote) for snacking, and not the drinking type.
so while your assertion that tea leaves hit home harder than daw aung san suu kyi’s trial is probably true – they are not looking ‘back at the drinker every time he stares into his cup’.
Well, at least in regards to pickled tea leaf used in tea leaf salad (one of the most popular dishes in Myanmar), the problem seems to be with the growers, who are adding the chemical dye (in this case, Auramine O) to their leaves to give them that shiny green sheen. Without the dye, they would be brown.
The best pickled tea (and green and black tea, for that matter) in Myanmar is grown by the Palaung in Shan State. When I visited Kyaukme earlier this year I was told that the Palaung have been using the dye for decades, maybe 40 years or more. It would be great if someone who knows more about this could shed some light on it.
I agree that new ways need to be found to invest, but look on the bright side: -at least the money is still seems to be there (-17%) which as Vichai N. pointed out, is comparatively good investment performance compared to many other such funds:)
Regarding brain drains, public sector employees etc, it looks to me that there are already plenty on the public payroll, and whats required is meritocracy, instead of nepotism.
Judging by the way the Puea Thai party is set up & run, such meritocracy looks a long way off, even IF the New Mandala ‘white knight’ makes the comeback many here seem to be hoping for:)
Who cares! It happened to the Newin people. Whereas you guys might be wetting yourself over Newin’s supposed U-turn, some of us still remember that he is just as corrupt and arrogant as Thaksin. Yoiu people have 5 second memories.
You want specific proposal for alternative use of the funds? How about filling in the investment gap where the traditional government and the private sectors aren’t ready to invest in? Invest in high-risk high-reward transformative technology, for example…venture capitalism, in other words.
Thailand can’t rely on the trinity of cheap labor manufacturing for japanese companies, agricultural commodities, and tourism and service for much longer. The margin and return in all these are shrinking. But unfortunately there hasn’t been a coherent long term vision on what to do. Government has been mostly preoccupied with survival from election to election/coup. Ditto the Thai-owned business. If the CPB is an able trustee, they would have seen this coming and do something about it long ago.
$30 billion is a lot of money. If it’s well managed they should make returns of several percentage points per annum, they can comfortably spend like 1 % each year to fund all sort of things. (I think in US, 3% is required to be spent by private charity funds) That’s like 10 billion baht already. That will support thousands of high-paying jobs for home-grown talent. Case in point, from my casual survey ten years after their graduation, more than half of the Computer Engineering graduates from Chula, which are basically the creme de la creme so to speak, are now working overseas. Most of the rest are working for either Thailand branch of foreign-owned company, or family business. None, nada, zero, zilch is working for public sector. I don’t think this example is atypical. And this trend of brain drain is definitely not healthy for the future of Thailand. Sadly, this is how it has been and will be.
Almost the same picture – I say almost because I have no way of checking – was posted at the same site more than a year ago, also showing the plane in Germany.
Some how in some way, the royalists in Thailand still think that Thai people will believe anything they say. Wake up brothers!!! They know a lot more than you think. Please give it (power) back to the people. Admit it Thai king is rich.
He is TOTALLY FREE to do anything with them AS HE PLEASE
It looks like one thing he is not prepared to do is to waste them (which seems in line with sound sufficiency economy principles:)
Bystander: It is my understanding that for many years the CPB assets have been available for use at less than market rents, sometimes peppercorn amounts, so it may not be as clear cut as many here like to make out.
also, perhaps the dividends are reinvesting, hence the size of the fund now?
I ask again, please provide specific proposals for alternative uses of the fund?
Further to Pax’s howl of rage #10 against the control, inter alia, of “mainstream media which now prefers reporting on an orphan boy searching for his dad and a baby panda….,” readers may find this post by Prachatai’s Harrison George of interest: http://www.prachatai.com/english/node/1258 . It tells of the doctoring of the winning entry in The Mass Media Photographers Association of Thailand Best Photo of the Year Award to give an entirely false meaning to the picture, which was taken by Thai Rath’s crime reporter Prasith Niwesthong during the Songkran violence.
I realize that this is slightly off-topic, but only slightly, since it is related to the collusion of the media in the government’s current ‘PR campaign’ – & it is truly disturbing.
Thanks Alex, for your thoughtful and considered response. To paraphrase you, some comments here are full of common sense and some lack any trace of it. Given that you failed to address any of the issues raised by me or others, and rather chose to offer an unqualified medical diagnosis of me, I would suggest your comment falls into the latter category.
Perhaps I do have a “sick, twisted mind”. It wasn’t always that way. There was a time when I actually kept “pets”, but ten years of living near a pack of hounds that howls in unision for twenty minutes when a butterfly passes, a mongrel toy terrier that yaps at the wheels of anything moving, then pisses on those wheels when they stop, an Alaskan husky, kept in a cage in the heat of Bangkok while whining constantly for the more familiar tundra, and a dozen stray cats that scream day and night during mating rituals anywhere and everywhere, has changed my attitude.
Yes, a I could be a “dangerous person”. I might be a bus driver who didn’t get proper sleep last night because of animal noise, and in irritation, anger or plain stupidity, I just overtook a truck on the crest of a hill. All my passengers were killed, as was the truck driver. I might be a doctor rostered night shift, but couldn’t rest today because of neighbours’ selfish indulgence of “pets”. Sorry, the scalpel slipped. I might be a banker talking on the phone from home, and just lost concentration because Tiddles next door let out a hail of barking as the postman arrived. I made a bad choice, millions of dollars evaporated and many lost their homes. Sure, I’m dangerous indeed, but what made me that way? Noise is not just a nuisance, it is a serious public-health issue. Crap on footpaths and the many viruses that mammals carry are also public-health issues, but noise is the silent killer.
Rest assured Alex, you will probably never have to have anything to do with me and people like me. It is unlikely we will meet at, for example, a “pet” show, which would probably be sponsored by the multi-billion-dollar pet-food industry, or can you believe it, $75-per-night pet hotels while humans are homeless.
I gather you are like a few of those above who claim to be an “animal lover”. Well that always looks good on your CV, especally when trying to score points to get into an afterlife. I’m a lover of New Zealand cheese and French wine, and those fancies have no impact whatsoever on my neighbours, unlike the indulgences of locals who seek the fast track to heaven by encouraging four-legged filth on or about their premises. I’ve actually heard people refer to the lump of useless meat and fluff on their floor as “part of the family”. I wonder if their other relatives eat their own vomit, root at random in public, drop hair in the video collection, howl all night and defecate where they want.
Oh, and spare me the “man’s best friend” line. I’ve heard that a few times already. Useful on farms, as guides for the blind and in some areas of law-enforcement, otherwise the best place for domestic animals in urban areas is on a menu.
Under the current law, put into effect by the royalist Khuang government in 1948, the King has FULL power of use, disposal, management of the CPB assets. NO RESTRICTION WHATSOEVER. He is TOTALLY FREE to do anything with them AS HE PLEASE. “р╕Хр╕▓р╕бр╕Юр╕гр╕░р╕гр╕▓р╕Кр╕нр╕▒р╕Шр╕вр╕▓р╕ир╕▒р╕в р╣Др╕бр╣Ир╕зр╣Ир╕▓р╕Бр╕гр╕Ур╕╡р╣Гр╕Фр╣Ж” – this is the exact wording of the law. Moreover, there is, BY LAW, NO EXTERNAL CHECK on the CPB, i.e. no one, not the governement, not the Parliament, let alone the public, have any right to investigate, to submit it to scrutiny, to punish any wrongs, etc.
Given all these conditions, should we regard the CPB assets as HMK’s PERSONAL wealth? ABSOLUTELY!
(P.S. I am aware that the CPB always claims that it annually asks the Office of Auditor General (р╕кр╕│р╕Щр╕▒р╕Бр╕Зр╕▓р╕Щр╕Хр╕гр╕зр╕Ир╣Ар╕Зр╕┤р╕Щр╣Бр╕Ьр╣Ир╕Щр╕Фр╕┤р╕Щ) to check its book. But even this cannot truly be verified!)
Some perspective here. The trustee thing is a red herring, it applies to all the monarchs in the list. From the Forbes article:
“Royal wealth derives from inheritances or positions of power. It is often shared with extended families, and many times it represents money controlled by royal families in trust for their nations or territories. For these reasons, none of the 15 royals on this list would qualify for our annual ranking of the world’s billionaires, regardless of their net worths.
For instance, we include the assets of Thailand’s Crown Property Bureau in King Bhumibol’s net worth, as he is a trustee. However, the Thai government disagrees and has publicly stated that the CPB’s assets are not part of the king’s personal wealth; rather, the CPB owns and manages the assets of the monarchy on behalf of the Thai people.”
So it is a level playing field with number one way out in front at 30 billion with the rest clocking in at 20 billion and below.

Our Enemy using in the name of loving “Nation, Religion, King”
The king for the king himself or for the nation? In a democratic system where the monarchy institution is under the constitution, the monarchy institution must not be above the principle that every institutions must be transparent and allowed investigation.
We used the nation, religion, and king ideology to destroy any opportunity or channel of changing the social structure that can create a better equality in the society. Indeed, we used that ideology to support various aspects of the structure that create an injustice society and made injustice society permanently maintained.

I agree with the article 100%.
I would like to further add my point that Phumipon’s family and his cronies cannot continue to use the Cold War’s ideology of “nation, religion, king” to enrich himself to 30 billions dollars while tourism in Thailand is based on prostitution industry. Nor can he continues to use lese majeste to destroy the brainy and patriotic sons and daughters of the land. Liberty, equality, and freedom to pursue happiness is the inspiration of the majority of Siamese people since June 24th 1932.

Food coloring and fear in Yangon’s tealeaves
great article. but regarding your concluding sentence – i believe the tea leaves in question are of the pickled variety (laphet htote) for snacking, and not the drinking type.
so while your assertion that tea leaves hit home harder than daw aung san suu kyi’s trial is probably true – they are not looking ‘back at the drinker every time he stares into his cup’.
sorry for being so nitpicky…
Food coloring and fear in Yangon’s tealeaves
Thaksin trounces the populists
A dead end whichever way you turn.
King Bhumibol’s billions
I agree that new ways need to be found to invest, but look on the bright side: -at least the money is still seems to be there (-17%) which as Vichai N. pointed out, is comparatively good investment performance compared to many other such funds:)
Regarding brain drains, public sector employees etc, it looks to me that there are already plenty on the public payroll, and whats required is meritocracy, instead of nepotism.
Judging by the way the Puea Thai party is set up & run, such meritocracy looks a long way off, even IF the New Mandala ‘white knight’ makes the comeback many here seem to be hoping for:)
Thaksin trounces the populists

Rumours, rumours
Almost the same picture – I say almost because I have no way of checking – was posted at the same site more than a year ago, also showing the plane in Germany.
King Bhumibol’s billions
Some how in some way, the royalists in Thailand still think that Thai people will believe anything they say. Wake up brothers!!! They know a lot more than you think. Please give it (power) back to the people. Admit it Thai king is rich.
King Bhumibol’s billions
He is TOTALLY FREE to do anything with them AS HE PLEASE
It looks like one thing he is not prepared to do is to waste them (which seems in line with sound sufficiency economy principles:)
Bystander: It is my understanding that for many years the CPB assets have been available for use at less than market rents, sometimes peppercorn amounts, so it may not be as clear cut as many here like to make out.
also, perhaps the dividends are reinvesting, hence the size of the fund now?
I ask again, please provide specific proposals for alternative uses of the fund?
Promoting Abhisit’s reform agenda
Lunch?
King Bhumibol’s billions
It’s a pity that this much capital could have been used more effectively for the benefits of the people.
In many developed economies, most private charity funds are required to spend a certain % of their wealth each year to retain the tax privilege.
If CPB property is really held in trust for the people, where’s the dividend?
King Bhumibol’s billions

‘The trustee thing is a red herring’
But is it a red herring when comparing it to real, personal, beneficially owned wealth?
King Bhumibol’s billions
