Not Dissapointed, “the worst human rights record in Thai history – by far ”
That’s a very big call, it might be time to start doing some entry level Thai history reading before discrediting yourself further.
Nonetheless, if even a fraction of your extraordinary claims are true, then I say the possey of dictators should throw everything they have at Thaksin
Oh, hang on, they did already!
Perhaps you can explain why after all these blatant mass murders, the dozens of Thaksin orchestrated terrorist acts and hundreds of billions of baht that were shamelessly pocketed from the public purse when everyone knew about it, the best that the possey of dictators who ousted Thaksin could could come up with after many, many months of thorough investigation is that he (shock horror!) advised his wife on a land deal?
Are the dictators you so enthusiastically support really that totally and utterly incompetent? If they are, then they are clearly not fit to lead a line dance not to mention a nation.
Or could it be that they actually dedicated entire teams of highly qualified professionals to the cause who spent a huge amount of time and effort scouring for evidence to support wild claims such as yours (as was reported widely in their own dictatorship controlled media at the time) but at the end of the day, the worst offense their witch hunt could substantiate was that Thaksin discussed a plot of land with his wife!!!!
Not Dissapointed, should we believe your rather hysterical and totally unsubstantiated claims, or the outcomes of many thousands of hours of dedicated research by teams of professionals led by the very same possey of hero dictators that you currently worship and who were unapologetically out to destroy Thaksins reputation at any cost!
Indeed, Their efforts were tireless and continued for many many months with full government access and resources but at the end of the day they found their own wild claims of wrong doing, murder and graft to be nothing more than totally unsubstantiated accusations. A fact proven by the reality that indictments were not issued.
Please help to keep this debate interesting not dissapointed by presenting some legitimate accusations, aim for something that has some genuine evidence behind it instead of just flouting unsubstantiated hysteria.
I’m also putting the finishing touches to another book entitled “Myanmar Trivia”. It will be out in July. Thanks for sharing my book with others. Big God bless.
Sir,
I’m Moe Myint Maung, the compiler and author of Burmese oddities. I’m very glad to see my book mentioned in your website. Actually, you have just mentioned the first book. I have written and published three volumes on the Strange Facts of Burma. Also written and published are Myanmar Firsts (Volume I & II). If you would like to have copies of my books, I am ready to send them to you.
So shallow, verging on just plain silly. Come on, get a grip! Arguments + facts! Not silly rants.
Do you know about Thai Visa? Perhaps that’s a little more to your style.
I have to disagree. Everything I’ve seen and heard about Pravuth suggests he sees his goal as building a constitution that will reliably ensure nationalistic, reactionary parties win at the poles.
Taksin is not the issue, of course; the issue is Taksinism. How do you keep out someone with a healthy disrespect for the Amart and wants to see shift of power more to the populace as a whole.
You seem to be confusing democracy with corruption. Yes, corrupt practices can occur under a democracy. If there are political systems in which corruption does not arise, I wonder what they are?
You said “this is the type of democracy NMmites want ….”
Really? Have you conducted survey? Most of us, I imagine, most of us see Thailand as an emerging democracy, not as yet a democracy in the western sense of the word.
You say cronyism was taken to a new level. Well, I don’t know about that, but I’m pretty sure you don’t either.
To keep it short: Try and string some arguments together backed up by facts.
Thailand: Deposed billionaire mass murdering dictator Thaksin Shinawatra launches his “Free Thais for Human Rights and Democracy” even as massive weapon caches of his terrorist network are still being uncovered all across the country.
Ironically (or insultingly?) the logo of his new criminal organization sports a dove – ironic/insulting because he and his political machine have the worst human rights record in Thai history – by far – literally thousands of innocent people were mass murdered during his reign of power.
Hear Hear, Well said John Butler. Why do leftists always try to undermine what’s not theirs to do so? Why must the world kneel to the leftist who always know best?
batman, can you substantiate your accusations of “constant repressive use of power”. Accusations and allegations, do not raise the level of debate – facts do. Nmites just delve ever deeper into accusations and allegations prompted by marshall and his false reporting.
You know nothing Patiwat. Your comparison is lame. Two different towns/city altogether.
Yes Sririraj is in bangkok and NO, Mt Auburn is not in Brookline but in Cambridge. get a life and stop trying to make facetious comments that only confirms your attitude.
I wrote that that the military is doing its job, not function. It depends on the constitution whether the military can engage in internal security activities. Usually an emergency allows for it. However, under “democratic” conditions even in an emergency the military as part of the executive receives its orders from the elected government. The interesting case was that prior to the coup neither the executive nor the judiciary did anything that they usually would be supposed to do to enhance national security.
The Harder Thaksin Shinawatra & His Foreign Backers Fight, the Better…
Adversity drives progress and change. Humans would never have evolved into intelligent, problem-solving beings in the first place had we not lived in a hostile environment that required us to continue to grow and change.
The threat Thaksin Shinawatra and his foreign backers pose to Thailand is an existential threat – not a mere nuisance. The solutions we devise, if we do it carefully today, can make Thailand stronger and better tomorrow.
When I see Thaksin Shinawatra launching his latest affront to humanity, his “Free Thais for Human Rights and Democracy” (FTHD), I see him trying to counter the PDRC and bring us right back to 2010 all over again. How do we stop him from doing this? Drain the swamp he draws his support from – drain the swamps of ignorance and poverty across Thailand that create vulnerable people he and his backers have exploited for the past 10 years. How?
1. Build strong, local, community institutions to address local problems. These don’t need to replace the government, but rather, augment it and do what the government cannot or will not do.
a. Education: local after school programs for students in your local area to help them with their homework, teach them useful skills not being taught at school. This can be beneficial for the students and the community, and make extra income for those giving the classes.
b. Local Economics: Community gardens, farmer’s markets Bangkok Farmers’ Market), craft markets, makerspaces (http://www.meetup.com/Bangkok-MakerSpace/), etc., can be started with just a handful of people meeting once a month and be expanded, sustainably, as you get a feel for what works and what doesn’t. Take cues from those already making progress in these areas.
c. Healthcare: While the means to treat diseases might still be something left to hospitals – promoting healthy living, first aid, and regular preventive checkups could help make the community healthier overall and less dependent on healthcare. Eventually, concepts like DIYbio labs may some day offer local treatments for diseases, and toward this goal, people can work as well.
d. Media: Anyone can make a blog, post relevant, helpful, pragmatic information online. From your experiments and experiences in implementing any of the above mentioned concepts, to raising awareness of injustice, abuse, and relevant news for the community, we all must begin bearing the responsibility of monitoring and analyzing the world around us – because we are the only ones who have the best interests of ourselves and our friends and family at heart – not some media corporation.
– start a blog
– make YouTube videos
– leverage Facebook and Twitter (free & easy to use)
– practice makes perfect – don’t worry about starting out – you’ll get better.
Understand that what Thailand faces is a battle in the streets, in education, in the media, culturally, economically, and politically. To defeat an enemy on the battlefield, you must occupy more of it then him – and you must push him off the battlefield altogether. You take, hold, and entrench yourself everywhere you can. In the media, you must push out the liars and propagandists with truth, pragmatism, and useful information that truly informs, and aids people in making their lives better.
In education, you displace foreign and domestic special interests trying to deform our young people’s minds, and we instead teach them skills to technically, literally shape the world around them through technology and pragmatism. In politics, we take our PDRC groups we made to attend and participate in protests, and develop them into permanent local groups that focus on building strong communities the poisonous influence of Shianwatra cannot enter, divide, and destroy. In culture – we seek to strengthen and promote the nation’s institutions and awareness of their history and contributions to modern day Thailand. Economically, we leverage technology locally to reduce our dependence on the very corporate-financier interests backing Thaksin Shianwatra (and others) and give ourselves full power to direct our future….
These are just some starting points. Thailand is being attacked from all sides, and so Thais must fight back from all sides. Protesting is not enough. Examine how to displace and remove Thaksin’s toxic influence by building something better and stronger where he seeks to infest.
Yeah like trying to keep a lid on the theft of B700Bn (and counting) and more than 3,000,000 tons (and counting) of rice disappeared from the mother of all democratically populist enterprises the RICE SCHEME? A scheme that put money into the pockets of thaksin’s family and Cronies and left the farmers begging for theirs.
Really Chris Beale, I really don’t see where you get that PDRC’s economic policy is sound?? You have backgrounds in economics to explain me how? Because as an economist I have so far seen nothing really convincing, or to put it in better words what I have seen looks like: improvising, lack of consistency, and irrelevance. And the best they have done until now are all reform that were planned by previous governments.
Where do you see that the army is going to tackle corruption??? Can you quote any reform made by the junta intended at ending corruption?? Do you know that many in the army are corrupted ? So how will corruption end with no institutional reform on its way? You have some private source with info on the future constitution???
I mean please give sound evidence, not just a statement on such serious matters!
bialao, yes they are the responsibility of the elected government; a government that only saw ways to bring graft, cronyism and corruption to a higher plateau because of their ‘winner-takes-all’ attitude.
This is the type of democracy that NMites want for Thailand, because it comes from elections! How naive and simple-minded!! Have you guys ever taken a look at what your elctions have done for Thailand? The water project is now under scrutiny and wasteages and double-dealings is now coming to light.
