“Stop treating them as ignorant bought-and-paid-for buffaloes.” Good advice Sceptic.
Now if only the Isaan politicians will take Sceptic’s counsel to heart …
In the meantime a very good friend of Thaksin and a very dear friend of Yingluck, the notorious “Sia Pliang” had been sentenced to three years in jail for embezzling state rice in 2007.
Take note: state rice embezzlement in Y2007 ! Sia Pliang was one of six top businessmen asked to report to the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) last month because he is also accused of having ties with the Siam Indica rice trading company. The Yingluck Shinawatra government authorised Siam Indica to improve 300,000 tonnes of 15% white rice for export to Indonesia in Y2011.
It is “friends/cronies of Thaksin/Yingluck” who treat not only Isaans, but all Thais for that matter, as buffaloes dammit!
Depends when you look at it, notable progress was made until 2001 with a lot of ups and downs, after that… and there were plenty of coups in the since 1976, and the ‘amart’ reigned supreme for most of that period, or so I have been told.
Did the 1997 constitution, touted as the most ‘democratic’ of all, did it help Thailand get closer to the goal, or did it in the stir up a power struggle that has nothing to do with democracy?
Does having elected oligarchs dominate the police, military, courts and bureaucracy make Thailand more democratic than if opposing elected and unelected oligarchs allow neither to dominate fully.
From my point of view Mr. Sulaiman’s opinion is much more balanced than previous opinion or analysis by Mr. Aspinall. I also agree that both candidates have no enough knowledge on the ‘best solution’ for Indonesia in the coming ASEAN Economic Community or any current international issues.
But one thing I should note is what Mr. Joko Widodo said about Palestine. We in Indonesia know more about what his party tends to do in dealing with Islam dan Muslims issues. What he said could be viewed by many as ‘janji manis’. It is hard to even believe that his party will support his idea since in local context, many Muslims do not see it that way.
@jaidee has a great point. As someone who does not have a dog in the Yellow/Red conflict, for how bad the Thaksin family is supposed to be, the only thing they were able to pin on his machine decisively in a legal action is a garden variety corruption deal, payment for a cooking show, and the transfer of a civil servant.
Do you get the point? Surely you have to be aware, these facts would lead a disinterested bystander to conclude they don’t really have much on him at all, that something else is going on, and that the “justice” system is rigged on the side of his enemies.
“the loathing, disgust, hatred, and utter rejection they have been receiving from the native Burmese-Buddhists and Yakhine-Buddhists”
Very strong words indeed Mr. Aung Moe. Even Jews don’t think of Germans like that anymore (in 1942 a lot of other things were happening in the world!)
what I meant with “great education” is not the idea of an elitist education: in Prabowo’s background (his education, his biography, his entourage) I would recognize a pattern with several voices and cultures which could well represent the complexity of the Indonesian society. Also the military background nowadays is not an index of authoritarianism in Indonesia: politically it may represent a position of impartiality and neutrality in a society with so many needs and interests.
No surprised when I read many comments. I know why many Thai people don’t want to be open minded or listen to other sides….That’s because they have been brainwashed since we were in the first grade….I hope some Thais still have a little brain left! LOL
you think PS will be able to handle this situation? (all the country disease). I thought PS will not bring democracy will back, he will make the country be like the Orde Baru. All the influence of him is Soeharto, like or not.
Whilst I disagree with Jokowi’s vision of education for Indonesia, it’s far too simplistic to conclude that Prabowo is a better candidate just because of his “great education.”
The world has too way many atrocious elites with “great education” to make that even an argument worth considering.
Be wasp Indonesia.
This article by Hla Oo explains very well from where so-called Rohingyas (Benhgali-Muslims) really came since 1942 and the historical reason for the loathing, disgust, hatred, and utter rejection they have been receiving from the native Burmese-Buddhists and Yakhine-Buddhists since the end of WW2.
That’s all good stuff, not disappointed. It actually reminds me of how Thaksin and TRT set out in 2001, with micro-finance, OTOP, 30 baht healthcare etc. It is full of optimism and idealism and none the worse for the latter. There is only one problem and that is your obsession with Thaksin. That obsession has already destroyed the “Democrat” party and with it the power of genuine democratic opposition in Thailand. It has broken the political careers of bright young men – Abhisit certainly; Korn possibly. Unless you can rid yourself of it – the obsession, that is – it will infect and poison all your ideas. Thaksin’s opponents have always been their own worst enemies and have been corrupted by their irrational hatred. They don’t know how to oppose and to counter; they only know how to hate – just like you it seems! If that is not the case, how come Thaksin is still even today the one individual whose image dominates the politics of Thailand? This despite his exile, two military coups, party dissolutions, banning some 300 of his political allies (cronies, if you must), the confiscation of more than $1.5 billion of his assets, and endless propaganda
Oh yes, one other word of advice; stop denigrating the great mass of the Thai people, particularly those who live and work to the north and north-east of Bangkok. Stop treating them as ignorant bought-and-paid-for buffaloes. Many of them may have received only rudimentary education, but they still have a good idea what is best for them and who has taken their side in their daily struggles.
Yes, now that Prayuth is shocked to discover human trafficking going on in Thailand (with military complicity according to the US report) he is going have to turn to ordinary corruption. With oversight against the law, it is like taking candy away from a baby.
@Notdisappointed: I don’t think there’s a single idea in that rant of yours that has the remotest connection to reality. But “the worst human rights record in Thai history by far”? Come on, have you actually read any Thai history?

Which way will get closer to the goal?
Rohingya: denied the right to be human
(1) Do Burmese hate Muslim & Kalar? – Yes
(2) Did Burmese army kill/maim Rohingyas and other ethnic minorities? – Yes
(3) Did Rakhines & Rohingyas hate and kill each other numbering in thousands? – Yes
(4) Do Rakhines hate Burmese & Rohingyas? – Yes
The enemy of my enemy is my friend?
No. Burmese use it in similar but different way.
– “Both my enemy and its enemy are my scapegoats”.
Very impressive huh?!!

Thailand was on the wrong side of World War II. I would be curious to know how many Thais are aware of that fact.
