Hi Thomas! A great read indeed. I am somewhat more skeptical about the inclusivist versus secular nationalist typology you have presented here. As you said, Nasdem and Hanura have been to date ‘partai pinggiran’. Given the chance to be in power, am pretty sure they will play their cards to be more like Golkar and PD. I am having a hard time believing that there is such thing as an ideological rift that separates golkar/pd on one camp and hanura/nasdem on the other (sampai saat ini, bagi saya, mereka masih satu kampung). On promiscuous power sharing, check out what Tantowi Yahya said here: http://indonesiasatu.kompas.com/read/2014/05/22/2215491/golkar.buka.peluang.dukung.jokowi-jk.jika.prabowo-hatta.kalah
So the negotiations were actually a trick to get all the important players into custody. These generals are dinosaurs. They believe they can dictate public opinion with broadcast censorship in the 21st century?
All educational institutions are closed. This is only giving the anti-coup students and academics free time to plan their next move. I think the red shirts were already prepared for the coup . Their next move wile come soon. “No justice, no peace”
I forgot to add that General Prayuth had a very clear choice at yesterday’s meeting of ‘parties in conflict’: accede to Peau Thai Party/UDD demand to grant ‘the amnesty’ (meaning the amnesty to Thaksin) and they don’t care for anything else … but the amnesty and only the amnesty.
It is hilarious if it were not so tragic. Even the Bangkok Post which is very impartial is saying correctly that this coup is not the answer.
All the problems go back to the 2006 coup. Politics has to be given a chance to carry on trying to have some kind of democracy, even a bad one.
But now we see the culmination of the greed of the elite and royalist, nationalistic sections who have broken democracy and assured something like a civil war within a matter of months. Too late to undo the craving for Democracy and the Red Shirts will end up winning out eventually. Just now it will be messy and tragic.
…And lets not forget the original coup that started the Rattanakosin Kingdom. The current rulers are the descendants of military leaders usurping the King and then creating a mythical context for doing it.
And now Suthep and his backers have what they really want, which is to tip the army’s hand into staging a coup d’etat. This happened at about 4:10 p.m. today, Thursday May 22, when the caretaker government again courageously refused to resign under pressure from Prayuth. We can kiss goodbye to democracy for a long time while they go about their “reforms” and do everything in their power to get rid of the Thaksin “regime.”
They are children and love themselves not the people.
They should be working for Housing for the poor, employment, education, healthcare for the poor and equality for all.
They should be ashamed for their selfishness and inability to love. HATE is never the answer. Hate breeds Hate, Love breeds Love, Love one another.
General Prayuth called a meeting to resolve Thailand’s political paralysis. Nearly everyone attended.
General Prayuth declared a quorum, invited everyone to be present (from the Red Shirts, Peau Thai Party, Democrats and the PDRC). Then the bickering exploded in earnest.
General Prayuth calmly declared that the meeting is over and everyone is under arrest. He explained that the military coup has officially commenced, thank you.

Is there an ideological cleavage in 2014?

That is story behind of yesterday’s coup.

A lot of people prefer dictator than Shinawatra. What we will see is rerun of a coup 8yrs ago.

Thailand is stuck in a backward state now.
Can we really live together?
Scott, thanks so much for your translation. In addition to it being a very interesting read, you’ve encouraged me to resume my Thai language studies.
Myanmar’s military: Money and guns
We can’t ask the Russian pilots, as they are in the Crimean Region now, invading Ukraine.

What happens in Bangkok is Thai – what happens in Isarn, is Lao.
Myanmar’s military: Money and guns
You are a naughty guy. Our Myanmar pilots can control well even latest Mig. Ask to Russia pilots. Study thoroughly about our Myanmar soldiers.
A coup by any other name…

You’ll need to update your list with the coup of 2014.

Yes, it’s 100% coup 🙁

Does n’t seem like the Shinawatras are backing down any time soon – despite social media attempts to blacken their name with alleged flights to Thailand’s “traditional” enemy, Cambodia. http://www.bangkokpost.com/news/politics/411107/somchai-denies-sneaking-away-with-wife-yingluck
