As living standards improve in their own countries importing foreign workers will become more and more expensive. Singapore parents will no longer be able to afford maids etc
    – one of the parents will have to stay at home. Building will be more expensive as will services like buses, trains, food stalls etc etc. This will have profound impact on the competitiveness of countries like Singapore in the future. More likely given their current treatment foreign workers will not want to come – or will want to hire Singaporeans. The Singapore Government is amazingly short-sighted.

It is unfair for to criticize when you do not have the full picture. The Chinese bus drivers are paid a starting salary S$1000, a month, given housing and tranport amounting to $275, no tax, and their gross salary including overtime pay is usually about $1800-$2000. Are they underpaid? Are they ill-treated?

    “Buyer remorse” by proxy:

1)Making KIA a saintly force that represent the Kachin that have chosen to pick a un_winnable fight especially with the still unfolding history of Kayin vs Bamar/Tamadaw in plain view, sure make KIA pathetic in the face of looming tragedy for ALL.

2)Road Map To Discipline Democracy (RMTDD) per Sr Gen Than Shwe, is an accepted course by ALL involved be it the West or Daw Aung San Suu Gyi.

“With no guarantee, no return, as it and at buyers’ own risk”, Sr Gen Than Shwe RMTDD certainly do not include U Thein Sein visiting Laiza anytime soon. Not w/o KIA accepting any demands.

Obviously no one is reading the fine print or figuring out the possible combined ramifications of RMTDD YET.

  9. Lleij Samuel Schwartz says:

You won’t get any argument from me. The hypocrisy of the anti-war crowd, that was so vocal during the Bush days, but now so silent now that Obama is in office, is astounding.

There are more Americans who wish to end “the Empire” than you might be aware of. Our views just don’t fit the media’s “narrative”, so they aren’t heard.

  10. Leif Jonsson says:

It is a bit curious to offer such a strong, serious, and negative verdict on what was a short term research project and was not primarily aimed at academics. The little report from 20 years ago can at least be situated in real concerns affecting a range of real people whose interests are sometimes at odds. The issue is not (in my opinion) that Ovesen’s predictions and proposals are wrong, but that he suggests that these have to be solved by giving the affected people some options regarding stable livelihood, and that the rest has to play out in local politics that is invested in some mutually beneficial outcomes. That, to me, is more “with it” than a lot of academic anthropology.

  11. Moe Aung says:

Surveys and statistics simply support, sometimes sensationalise or state the obvious. How may Burmese do you now have in Malaysia for the same reasons? There’s a lot of catching up to do before the brain drain stops….and resumes as Malaysia’s experience shows. That’s why boom and bust cycles are what they are – cyclical. Burma is set to join the New World Order and naturally the same old cycle.

  12. Anne says:

Development-induced displacement is the forcing of communities and individuals out of their homes, often also their homelands, for the purposes of economic development. It is a subset of forced migration. It has been historically associated with the construction of dams for hydroelectric power and irrigation purposes but also appears due to many other activities, such as mining and the creation of military installations, airports, industrial plants, weapon testing grounds, railways, road developments, urbanization, conservation projects, forestry, etc. Development-induced displacement is a social problem affecting multiple levels of human organization, from tribal and village communities to well-developed urban areas.

According to many specialists (e.g. Bogumil Terminski, 2012) at least fifteen million people each year are forced to leave their homes following big development projects (dams, irrigation projects, highways, urbanization, mining, conservation of nature, etc.).

Development-induced displacement or the forced migration in the name of development is affecting more and more people as countries move from developing to developed nations. The people that face such migration are often helpless, suppressed by the power and laws of nations.

The lack of rehabilitation policies for migrants means that they are often compensated only monetarily – without proper mechanisms for addressing their grievances or political support to improve their livelihoods.

SPEAKING FROM MY POINT OF VIEW THE REASAN WHY HIGH SKILLED PEOPLE LEAVE THEIR OWN COUNTRY IS TO A LARGE EXTENT COMMON AMONG THE THIRD WORLD STATES BASICLLY BETTER PAY AND BETTER CONDITIONS OF LIFE .

  14. Ohn says:

    Thanks Lleij,

I will count ONE with delight and relish. Only 300 odd millions more to go!

I understand my own comments in these columns would be regarded as “extreme” or definitely “un-orthodox”. But unfortunately they are likely to be nearer truth. That is the problem. Me alone being do-la-la all by my myself is no one’s worry. But at the odd chance that what I say are true, we all are in trouble!

The Americanism which used to be so, so honourable at the time of John Lennon ( this does not imply his own personal stand) was true moral and social high point for the world- like in anti-war movements.

Now Americans and the allies are blatantly killing, bombing and torturing innocent people in the world and taking over (even though financially not so great as Iraqi war was too expensive at one trillion) oil rich countries- Iraq, Libya, now- Syria on flimsy make up pretexts and aiming to kill all or at least majority Iranians next to loot their riches without a murmur of dissent from the American public is sure sign of degradation of morality and wisdom of majority if not all of the inhabitants of the Great Untied States of America.

    Killings sure be-gets killings.

After so much killings around the world for preserving “American Way of life”, people go and buy guns. Such is peace. One such gun was used by a boy to kill so many others, just now.

when Obama in his idiotic way say “I have only two words. Predator drones.” , it was much expected of him as a consummate actor for his handlers, but the sycophantic and enthusiastic laughter that followed that comment defined today’s America.

Following another horrendous and senseless shooting,it is not the gun law that is required. But simple humanity.

Americans needs to be HUMAN before they will ever have peace.

    Simple. Just being HUMAN, Lleij.

Yes I am stating Americans are NOT human now any more. One and all. No human will go and kill the Syrians or foment a civil war.

Please do not say it was their own people killing each others or Assad being such monster. Just about every one has done that much already.

True, but we don’t believe that torturing them prior to eating them makes the meat better? Not to mention that many of the dogs are sick and dying already. UMMMM. That must be good for you? We don’t boil our chickens alive. This is truth, not propaganda.

  16. Kelly Sheppard says:

Do you know that pet dogs are stolen from Thailand, sick, dehydrated, and tortured, some carrying rabies, and a host of other parasites so I hope you enjoyed your “delicacy.” This barbaric trade is under investigation and needs to be ended. There are dogs packed into Thailand’s shelters dying of distemper and suffering and people scrambling to save them so be a little more educated before you make flippant comments about Fluffy on your plate.

Yes not all Chinese are smart or harworking but when we compare we do so in general.. In majority sense… Chinese ppl are by nature superior intelligent, skillful and hardworking in general terms. Just look at the Chinese diaspora in south east Asian countries and see those multiracial societies… In general the community that stand out is obvious..it’s genetics to a large extent.. East Asians genes…east Asians are the yellow ppl ..Han chinese japs n Koreans .. Hope we learn from each other and admire the capable.. Don’t be jealous.. Give credit where it is due..just see around the south east Asian nations and the real life experiment tells the superiority of the Chinese ppl.. N their peaceful nature

Sorry U Moe Aung. Reply 7.1 as apparent was to be attached to #8.

Thank you for the links. It is kudos to the well bought up international press and the academics that legitimate voices

    http://www.news24.com/MyNews24/How-Mandela-sold-out-blacks-20120717

are stifled and only the “party line” – Mandela is such a great man and of such great stature, sacrificed, honourable, etc, etc, so that every one in South Africa should or MUST go along with his saying which is to surrender to the Whites’ dictates. And in reality end up the same or worse after two decades under a government staffed by new names!

The political assassinations in South Africa are counted 50 since and is accelerating as the very seed of continued violence and distrust is fertilised well in rotten soil. South African people DO NOT DESERVE that. They are not borne killers. They are borne into killing atmosphere.

Burma is now in a rapid catch up stage for similar destitution and violence as in South Africa plus intense drug abuse (HIV spread) and roaring trade domestically in near future (this one is in honour of the dear neighbour Thailand).

    Only required ingredients are;

Covetous and greedy and always feeling “inferior” yet ruthless mindset populace
( in other word people full of Lawba and Mawha)- corruption of people.

Forceful appropriation of centuries old traditional farm lands and other establishments.

Most importantly the repair of monetary system’s connection to the international system which is- alas!- controlled tightly by only a handful of unknown individuals.

In today’s Burma, it is apparent that the three biggest efforts are concentrated on

    1. making people feel totally inadequate and worthless and covetous
    2.land confiscations
    3.change of monetary system.

International academics as well as media mainly by trusted “exile” media play central role. I note you made a comment in Saw Yan Naing’s article in the Irrawaddy that supermarkets are not what Burma need. In fact supermarkets are real example of the voluntary enslavement of the people with death wish surrendering their freedom and in fact health itself to the multinational corporations for the vane desire of shopping experience in big, big shining buildings with totally artificial seductive lightings and colours. (All human are proud to be slave to big, big supermarkets, as if cursed.)

    http://www.sovereignty.org.uk/features/footnmouth/smarket.html

    http://www.thepunch.com.au/articles/dont-be-fooled-the-supermarkets-are-milking-us/

    http://plover.net/~bonds/nosupermarket.html

It simply proves that no amount of PhD’s could make people wise.

Apart from supermarkets and “worst city in Asia” descriptions, etc, etc, of making people little and inferior while promising to be “modern”- meaning buying Coke and McDonald- spread of decadent culture will erode the traditional contented nature of people of Burma. All the leading monks now never ever talk about Five Precepts, end of Lawba, Dawtha, Mawha or contentment but regularly give sermons about “donations” of billions of kyats or foreign travels or latest electronic gadgets or the desirabilities of plush lives ( in their minds)of foreign countries and their life styles. The “exile” media constantly reminds people of how pathetic they are in news articles and editorials.

Land in Burma is at the mercy of the Sit-tut government. It is more than likely that the fire sale of public properties by the people in the government to the people in the government in 2009-2010 would have been in accordance with well planned advise by the international financial corporations. No one in the international press objected to it. Lack of any noise by “west” funded “exile” media was expected.

But the process of accelerating land confiscations and eviction will now become a seed for rallying point for the “still un-corrupted” portion of general populace as is now seen even with the best effort to stifle it by false messiah Aung San Suu Kyi whose days as useful Trojan are numbered now not lasting no where as long as Mandela for all the West’s effort. She does undo herself with many sudden, unexpected and erratic acts that would make her handlers breathless at times! And yet more to come! Soon.

But the most damaging and dangerous still is the manipulation of the monetary system and the effort for DEBT PILING. Even if the populace remains honest and not corrupted by unholy desire and stay cohesive, and the land is not forcefully taken away by the Sit-tut under Phosphorus bombs and guns, once the monetary system is re-connected, it is simple matter of few key strokes to destroy the country faster than any neutron bombs and drone launched missiles.

Here the all out effort by the international economists and the happily collaborating Burmese ones working hand in hand would be so exhilarating to see for the money masters.

    One is reminded of

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ogqZ6pnWM7o

Imran Hosein’s description that the notion of independence in countries after the second World war is meaningless as the monetary system was by then attached to he puppeteers’ string.

Burma’s current system of opium trade ( later ATS as well) and black market based money chaos while damaging and non-beneficial to the majority public is to be replaced by far worse fully integrated monetary system which be-unknown-to-the hither-to-outsmarting-everyone generals will effectively mould the country and the inhabitants (including the -alas!- the generals) to the liking of the money’s controllers.

Few key strokes will change the essential commodity prices, land value, transport charges, interest rate and loan availability, etc to foment designer chaos as already seen in the Caribbean, South America, Africa and parts of Asia.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YL_6TYQ6KDQ

People of Burma honestly working peacefully for production of FOOD for others for centuries are now at the end of the brunt of cruel and incessant assault from the outside world comprehensively for the first time in history for total obliteration.

It is helped and facilitated by none other than people they have full faith in.

The world will be sadder and poorer, how shiny it is, for the loss.
