Myra Mentari Abubakar is a research affiliate at the Center of Islam and Global Challenges at the International Islamic University of Indonesia (UIII) and the International Centre for Aceh and Indian Ocean Studies (ICAIOS). She received her PhD from the Australian National University, where she studied the making of Indonesia's female national heroes. She has held fellowships at the National University of Singapore, the University of Cambridge, the KITLV Royal Netherlands Institute in Leiden, and the Leibniz Institute for Educational Media.
