I teach at Chula and was not surprised to read about all the hanky-panky allegations about Supachai Lorlowhakarn. The case is an open secret, and we are waiting for the University Council to do something as it has damaged our reputation.

So, why is he so shy about his degree? On checking, I puzzled to find that there was no record of him getting his B.Sc. from the Faculty of Science, as his CV says. I therefore checked his other listed positions at Chula.

    1. “Advisory Board Member, M.Sc. and Ph.D. Programme on Technopreneur and Innovation Management, Chulalongkorn University”. This appears to be true.

    2. “Guest Lecturer, Technology and Energy Management Programme, Energy Research Institute,Chulalongkorn University.”
The Energy Research Institute has no record that Supachai Lorlowhakarn was ever appointed in this role.

We have seen several recent cases where false claims have resulted in resignations as well as police action. So Chulalongkorn has a duty to investigate, and we are all sad that it seems to be so slow, and throwing its reputation away.

Has anyone seen ‘Little T’s thesis on organic agriculture at the National Defence College? I wonder whether NDC might be the source of his influence?

The paralysis at NIA extends way beyond its website. The NIA Board Chairman post is still vacant after Kosit Panpiemras resigned a year ago. Pornchai Rujiprapa (Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Science) is still keeping the seat warm, but so far no takers….

Amazingly, he and NIA’s board seem happy for NIA to be ‘represented’ by someone embroiled in deep scandal and criminal cases. Innovation agencies and Science Ministries around he world must be chuckling to themseleves at Thailand’s self-delusion and thick-skinned ineptitude. Why can’t Pornchai just end this embarrassment?

To add to what I said earlier –

    1. Najib in an address to a gathering said “The Bersih people wants to over throw the elected Govt… That’s their true intention”

    2. In another public address Najib sneered “A little bit of tear gas and these people go crying to the hospital”

Now, what kind of leader would utter imbecile statements like those, if they are worried about “bad publicity”

  5. Aung Moe says:

U Ne Win, U Than Shwe including my great uncle who was a decorated military commander and divisional chief of eastern division, who later become a minister,

    Aung at #5,

Sounds like your great uncle was that notorious Brigadier Than Tin who was the CO of Eastern Command and later Minister for Mines?

Was he also credited for inventing that brutal Cut-4-cuts (Phyat-lay-phyat) operations in the delta and wiped out the Karens and communists?

Is he still alive or now in hell for all the atrocities he committed there?

  6. Aung Moe says:

Almost everybody in Burma now knows that Daw Suu will become the president in 2015 as she and Thein Sein have since agreed with a handshake back in August 2011 for a gradual power-transfer deal, unless something really unexpected happens (to her or U Thein Sein) before that date in 2015.

That UNLESS is a huge unless and what General Min Aung Hliang’s army will do between now and that power-transfer date immediately after the 2015 general elections, where the NLD will surely win again with another landslide, will be closely watched not only by the Burmese elite but also by the Americans and the Chinese.

First of all, I would like to say thank you so much to the writer. You did a really great job of describing Chut Wutty life and his devotion work to help save the forest in Cambodia. My prayer and deep condolences goes to him and his family. It is a very sad moment in deed to have lost such a brave and courages man. I hope his lost won’t go in vain and that this will do a wake up call to the Globe and help bring justice for his death and clean up the corruption.

  8. Aung says:

nani gigantum humeris insidentes indeed, plan B.
And thank you U Kyaw Kyaw for your kind response.
Now I am wondering what happened to an article I came across this morning by Dr. Farrelly about exPats returning to Myanmar. I hope it will find its way back to Mandala soon.

    Names? First is Khanchit?

And Chivan, presumably you have read this piece on the subject of recent episodes of nationalism. Good bit of oped.

#135 Chivan “When Cambodia had peace with Thaksin, Cambodia never wanted to look back in the past”

The relationship and historical antagonism between the Khmer and the Thai peoples is rather more complex than you suggest and goes back centuries involving an ebb and flow of empire…. Both Cambodian and Thai politicians play the nationalist card as and when it suits them. The truth is that both nations have a largely shared heritage. The divisive curse of rabid nationalism is also a shared affliction. At the present time I don’t think the hate-mongering of PAD extremists has gained very much traction amongst the majority of Thai people although it occasionally serves as a useful vehicle for Hun Sen to send Khmer people into a frenzy for a day or two.

Its up to the mods if they want to let this one run, but it has little to do with the subject of Nick’s report.

The Dem MP shouted out “Heil Hitler”.

    Kind of unambiguous.

Not sure even Chalerm himself, however odious, is wanted in connection with shooting a man dead on camera or of ordering snipers to shoot unarmed civilians.

  14. Suriyon Raiwai says:

Chris, I think the book’s point on Tanaka, Marcos, and Kim is that they brought pride to the people of previously “backward” Niigata, Marcos, and Cholla, respectively. What it is comparing to Banharn is not theese men’s success in national politics but rather their success in contributing to what Nishizaki calls collective social narratives and positive provincial identity. He is interested in how thesel local heroes were viewed in their political bailiwicks and how that built pride among the residents of their bailwicks (who may or may not really care how these men are viewed by others). Do have a look at his discussion of Cholla. It is excellent.

Peter, the real question is how to understand the sort of “development” that Banharn and Newin have brought to their home provinces. Montesano seems to suggest that Sarit’s understanding of the term has some drawbacks.

    > “People of Italy hung Benito Mussolini to death”

    He was shot.

    > “Cambodia never wanted to look back in the past about Thailand until Abhisit came to power and screwed up all the good relation between Cambodia and Thailand”

You’re overlooking the rioting and burning of the Thai Embassy and the $50m damage done to Thai businesses in Phnom Penh … of course.

    > “using Cambodia numerals to write on Thai currency”

    Oooh the indignity of it!

  16. Chivan says:

    To Dan #112

The topic tags say Cambodia, Thailand, Thaksin so what I say about Thailand is not off topic.
Let me tell you, no other country in the world know Thailand better than Cambodia.
It’s called amazing Thailand because millions of Thai people accepted their country changing its name from Siam to Thai by a war crime dictator loser Phibun Songkram who sided with Japan losing WWII. Cambodia had admiration for Japan for recognizing its defeat, but Cambodia had no admiration for Thailand for refusing to accept its defeat and Cambodia knew this kind of Thai dictator attitude many times in the past and in present.
People of Italy hung Benito Mussolini to death for siding with Hitler but people of Thailand make Phibun Songram as Prime Minister for siding with Japan.
For Thai people, the Australians speak EngAlish not English because Thai speak THai not Tai.
Thai dictators sent many ambassadors back home because those countries voted Preah Vihear Temple a favour of Cambodia and Thai dictators refused to accept the ICJ verdict that the UN had to suspend Thailand as its member forcing Thailand to accept the ICJ verdict in 1962.

When Cambodia had peace with Thaksin, Cambodia never wanted to look back in the past about Thailand until Abhisit came to power and screwed up all the good relation between Cambodia and Thailand that Cambodia had no choice but to speak up the truth about Thailand. Hun Sen allowed the red shirts to meet Thaksin in Cambodia because Hun Sen wanted to show the world that what Thailand and Cambodia should do living in peace together.
The only people in the world do not want Thailand living in peace with Cambodia is the yellow PAD who owned ASTV never stop yelling and insulting Hun Sen and people of Cambodia everyday on TV but those yellow PAD have no shame at all yelling and insulting Hun Sen and people of Cambodia but using Cambodia numerals to write on Thai currency and copied Cambodia Angkor Wat for Thai royal palace in Bangkok.

  17. Jayzee says:

“A Dem MP did Sieg Heil the speaker in Parliament.”

Be fair, he probably did not have a clue what the implication was… it translates as ‘hail victory’ and he probably just wanted to show off his linguistic skills…

The photgraph was taken a mere 4 days after the end of the “Night of the Long Knives’, which purged the SA leadership from the National Socialist (Nazi) Party. The office of President was abolished on 1 Aug 1934, the day before Hindenburg actually died, and henceforth Chancellor Hitler (as he was on 6 Jul) became die Fuhrer (the Leader).

  18. Jon Wright says:

    Andrew Spooner:

I wasn’t really thinking about Chalerm’s ‘drunk’ episode – more about his sons’ escapades and his defending of them. I thought it was just incredible that this odious guy was invited to become a deputy prime minister. Wikipedia says that other odious figure, Samak Sundaravej, even made him Interior Minister – which is even more of an afront – assuming that ministry holds sway over police and public order.
