“There [are] seven steps in the fight against the amaat, whereby we are currently at the sixth step which is the training, political education and organisation of the resistance which could lead on to open fighting. The last step is the most worrying: releasing the forces of khorng-jorn (р╕Бр╕нр╕Зр╣Вр╕Ир╕г) or guerrillas.”
Is it too early to talk about the prospects of a new armed insurgency group forming in Thailand?
I have read accounts from the internet and in the newspapers that a number of the hardcore group leaders have surfaced in Cambodia, and are talking about forming a guerrilla force with bases there. Any substance to these accounts? There seem to be enough rural Red Shirts willing to join the fight, but would Hun Sen allow the presence of guerrilla groups in northern Cambodia, and where would the guerrillas obtain weapons and logistical supplies in sufficient quantity to mount a threat to the Thai military? One source or weapons might be the Thai military bases themselves along the border with Cambodia, taking a page from the playbook of the Muslim insurgents in the South.
I really do not want to go into this money-withdrawal debate, but I thought the huge withdrawal by anyone not considered a friend of the current in-power mafia is obvious. Note also that most of not all Thais of considerable wealth is currently under a very simple classification system: Pro-establishment or Pro-Thaksin (The anti-establishment and not pro-Thaksin option is currently not available – farangs excepted).
My two cents of common sense by putting myself in the shoes of the rich in Bangkok:
Knowing how Thailand operate, knowing the justice system has been compromised, knowing that if the Red loses then things in Thailand stand a very high chance of going back a hundred years… what do one think will happen?
Those with wealth that is not pro-establishment will be “punished” a multitude of ways and legally dodgy explanation will be in place to explain why so-and-so can longer do a certain set of business at the very least. (Ref- Silapakorn student case, just transfer over to business) Outright confiscation of wealth at the mid-way (death of course being the worst, but Thailand is not that bad yet). That set of action is common, age-old and predicatable (therefore not just atrributable to Abhisit government)
So if *I* were amongst The Families that do not like the current situation and is “suspected” (*I* will not be dumb enough to make outright remarks of being anti-establishment, but surely my lack of support will be sort of obvious), *I* would certainly start making exit plans. It will start with slow outflow of cash from Thailand (which *I* know will make me vastly unpopular since I will be taking Thai wealth out of Thailand to spend elsewhere but hey, all the rich does that). But as the situation worsens with the Red protests, *I* will also naturally speed up my exit strategy, more recklessly now. It is clear from Day One of the protest the Reds cannot win. It can at most raise awareness.
If *I* were pro-Red, *I* might contribute part of my money to the cause, but not the bulk, *I* am afterall rich and used to wealth – a little selfish of course. But *I* really do have to safeguard the lifestyle *I* am use to!
If *I* were Pojamarn, *I* WILL definitely transfer chunks out of sight – but *I* probably will have to give some to the Red cause because of *my* relation to Taksin.

So, there is really no mystery as to the huge amounts of money transfers.
I steadily transfer my baht out right after the 06 coup for simple exchange rate and poor future business prospects reasons, do you not expect those rich to do the same since they clearly have more to lose?
The sterling example of Thai court confiscating almost half of the value of the sale of Shin Corp to Temasek would have sat heavily on their minds. True, Shin Corp grew due to corruption (NO business in Thailand can survive, much less grow without paying undertable money – I paid too for my small business to do business). But Shin Corp was a business that succeeded the same way as all successful businesses in Thailand succeeded. And Shin Corp belongs to Taksin and shareholders, not the Thai government. At most the court could have done was charged tax – not confiscate half the value. Shin Corp owed the Thai government NOTHING. Whatever monopoly rights it had from the Thai Government (whoever was government then), those “rights” were BOUGHT and PAID for in CASH or equivalent a long time ago. Just like any of the big businesses in Thailand OWED nothing to the government. Their rights were also bought and paid for. What is different THIS TIME is that, now we know that the Thai Courts CAN and WILL selectively charged fraud and confiscate wealth. That is reason enough for any one with a modicum of intelligence to transfer wealth out of their commonly used account to safeguard it. As a matter of fact, if the DSI choose to investigate Pro-Establishment accounts, they will have found similar outflow values, perhaps in different ways (since they would have been informed by DSI what kind of money flows are being tagged).

I read Titinan’s article with mixed feelings. He is obviously an highly educated person, capable of very logical reasoning backed by facts and knowledge. And yet he is also one of the reason, so clearly, why Thailand will have a hard time moving forward. After all that happened, after all the injustices and deaths, he still refused to see what he knows in his heart, and all because he hates one man.
Because of that, Taksin will always have more influence that he actually have – because people in power hates and fear him, and because the middle class is influenced to hate and fear him.
Ahbisit, like Taksin, is already “tainted”. He cannot be the unifying figure anymore. Just like Hilary could not make it as US presidential candidate because she carries too much baggage.
The earlier Titinan and all like him get that, the better. The earlier that point goes through, the earlier the elections is announced so that more people have more time to prepare, the higher chance for a new likely leader to emerge, the better for Thailand.
Other than that, keep expanding the education budget, cutting military budget, working on quality improvement for education, continue to improve healthcare and OTOP. Get rid of that army cooked up constitution and reinstate the 97 one and continue working on improving that one. Any politician advocating all that, I will vote for that person – even if he is Samak. As I said, I am a realist, not an idealist.

Over the next 6 months we are expecting some pretty significant changes around here. The “Thailand in Crisis” series has given us a bunch of other new ideas. Glad to hear that we are providing a valued service and platform. As ever, if you want to get in contact directly you can find me here.
And, of course, today Episode 4 of the “Thailand in Crisis” vodcast and pocast series will go live. It includes more graphs from Andrew and an interview with a senior Thai professor. Stop by later today to find out more.
A great, much-needed web-site. Congratulations.
Can I just suggest perhaps dividing comments into an academic section (i.e. sources need citing), and a general comments section ?
Many “Four More Years!”
I find the newly introduced video interviews a great innovation and highly instructive. Seeing faces and hearing voices adds much needed credibility and rationality to the debate.
I want to follow up on the comments made in 6, 7 and 25 about the shocking case of the persecution of prospective Silpakorn student Nattakarn Promsutthirakat.
On behalf of myself and some colleagues at Thammasat University, I wrote to Dr Pinmanee and to the Rector of Silpakorn, Professor Uthai Dulyakasem, about the injustice that Khun Nattakarn has suffered. As neither has replied to my letter, I would like to publish it here.
“Dear Professor Pinmanee,
I am writing in connection with the case of Ms Nattakarn Sakoondarachart.
Apparently, you have rejected her application to study in the Faculty of Arts at Silpakorn University on the basis of unproven and irrelevant assertions about her political views and personality. You are quoted in the Manager newspaper on 24 May 2010 as saying that otherwise her application would have been successful.
This is a gross dereliction of your responsibility to Ms Nattakarn as an individual and to the concepts of academic freedom and natural justice.
In the interests of fairness, we strongly urge you to reconsider your decision.
Yours sincerely
Thomas Hoy and others”
I urge anyone who feels the same to copy this letter or amend it in ways they think best and send it to Professors Pinmanee and Uthai.
I hope these professors have the intellectual honesty to justify their actions by replying to my letter and any others that this post may encourage.
If not, I hope they have the conscience to feel ashamed.
the money numbers are interesting if you like staring at static pictures
but without transaction details its impossible to draw any real conclusions
like perhaps the Shinwatras or others were doing some land or business deals somewhere… how much of the money went overseas?
for the MPs, did the transactions include their income for example (more in than out) or any number of other transactions
how much related to the rally?
the reds were accepting thousands of minor and some major donations and paying expenses everyday, presumably there is a money trail for that, was this through personal accounts?
as I said, meaningless numbers to feed speculation… (presumably the govt asked the DSI to release them for this reason)
” . . . ordinary reds . . . to reject Thaksin is Thailand’s way forward . . .” won’t be easy. Thaksin’s ‘cashrisma’ is a drug no ordinary red could resist . . . in peace or (civil) war.
Just look at the amount presumably spent (withdrawals) by the Thaksin family alone, and their companies, during the Sept29 – May2010 protests-rebellion:
I provide the draft translation for information and use as needed.

Mr. Jut stated that at present inasmuch as threats to national security were being thwarted only by the military, there were still threats of magnitude against the monarchy dangers against security, the Justice Ministry had to provide oversight because it was deemed to be extremely close [to the king]. Which, therefore, the memorandum of joint cooperation was signed under the policy of prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, in order to give the three ministries and all agencies associated with relevant networks integrated operations to oversee, protect and prevent from occurring any threats to the institution of the monarchy. This includes following and apprehending any group to prevent legal wrongdoing such as behavior like gambling, and online pornography which are harmful to children and youth.

Mr. Phiraphan stated that coordination of joint cooperation between the three ministries will result in quick results by overseeing threats to security. In any event, as to the Ministry of Justice in the past, there were orders to close 43,000 websites that defamed the monarchy, and there are another 3,000 awaiting to be closed after orders have been issued. As well groups are being continually apprehended that commit offenses related to the above. In this, I would like society to join together in realizing that the institution of the monarchy is different from institutions in foreign countries, whereby in Thailand the institution of the monarchy is included in one Thai legal provision under national security. Therefore it is necessary that information on the Internet be correct.

“The institution of the Thai monarchy is related to society and the Thai people in a form different from institutions in other countries, whereby in Thailand it is held that if there were no monarchy it is not known whether there would be any Thailand today or not. As such, the monarchy is held to be the most important institution in the nation. Therefore, there is a necessity to construct correct understanding among Thai people and foreigners because problems that occur on the Internet are not problems that occur just for children and young and society, but also pose extreme dangers that have to be quickly dealt with – that is, dangers to the security of the nation’s highest institution,” the Minister of Justice said.

Mr. Niphat said, “Affixing signatures to this joint memorandum will hold us to joint principles, that is, everyone has the same king. This, no matter what ideas may be in other matters which is a right of individual choice, in the matter of the monarchy everyone must have the duty to join in protecting it, whereby the Justice Ministry will integrate with others to enforce related laws. For example, there is the Film and Video Act of 2008, and prime ministerial regulations Creative Media and National Security Act of 2008, together with a strong network of more than one million persons of culture assisting. Regardless, the people should see results from the sighing of this joint MOU within three months, whereby the three government ministries will have the duty to proceed and produce indicators reflecting [the results of this effort.”]
Rather woolly by Thitinan’s usual standards – and in this one article, he offers two seemingly contradictory statements:
“After the reds protested and rampaged in April 2009, the government of Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva promised reconciliation and reform. The consequent parliamentary recommendations for constitutional amendments made little headway. Abhisit catered to his patrons in the Bangkok establishment, and antagonized and alienated the reds to the extent that they retook the streets of Bangkok. He had the entire year in 2009 to bridge Thailand’s rural-urban divide and structural disparity and to bring the red shirts on side, but the result was the opposite. The Abhisit government has become a tainted source of Thailand’s problems rather than its way forward. As he is a principal party to the conflict, Abhisit’s stewardship of reconciliation and reform is suspect from the outset.”
yet
“The reds rank-and-file need to dissociate from Thaksin’s corruption and manipulation, and Abhisit’s patrons and backers should accept ordinary reds as democratic aspirants for opportunities and upward mobility. It requires concessions and reforms of the established order in the coming years but it is the best course for Thailand’s future. A country famous for its compromising ways has the capacity to navigate out of its democratic dead end. A self-enlightened establishment as fronted by Abhisit that can embrace and bargain with ordinary reds and their alternative leadership to reject Thaksin is Thailand’s way forward.”
So, on the one hand, because of his record Abhisit won’t be trusted in the future – but, on the other, he can successfully front a “self-enlightened establishment”. The assumption seems to be that UDD have only to detach themselves from Thaksin for the “establishment” to magically see them in a new light, suddenly recognise the justice of their grievances and promptly redress them – with the process presided over by a now somehow “untainted” Abhisit. Is there anything in even pre-Thaksin Thai history to suggest that this fairy-tale ending is likely?
And what to make of “….. concessions and reforms of the established order in the coming years…..”? Constitutionally, Abhisit’s government now has a maximum of 18 months to run – though Thitinan recommends “….. Abhisit should go through the electoral test at an earliest opportunity“. One suspects (and Thitinan seems to think likewise) that even using the rest of the full term is not long enough “to roll out more populist measures to placate the reds and for the army and state agencies to conduct pacification campaigns in the countryside using royalist symbols. As these policies and campaigns were not enough to stop the reds last year, their prospects are similarly dim this time around.” Even if they did prevent a 2011 Mk3 progression from the 2009 and 2010 protests, what price a Democrat-led government after the next election – assuming it’s allowed to be held?
Thanks, Chris, I don’t remember these details very well.
The talk has gone quiet, though.
The first thing that comes to mind is that they need more troops on the ground to control reds there, ISOC style, explaining the meaning of life and such.
I’m pretty sure Prem hasn’t run it by Abhisit yet.
I (re-) discovered New Mandala just recently during the Thai Crisis, being disappointed with the dull and uninformed view of especially Germany’s mass media.
So I’d just like to thank you for your efforts to provide a broad spectrum of opinions. I never felt someone was trying to push through a political agenda, by the way.
It’s not a state of shock, more like a state of disbelief. Plucking figures out of thin air, are we that gullible? But this is the land of lies, and they expects us to be good little sheep. So, may be.
Translation of interview with Sae Daeng
Thitinan on Thailand’s “Dead-End”
—

Thanks for all of the good wishes and feedback –
Over the next 6 months we are expecting some pretty significant changes around here. The “Thailand in Crisis” series has given us a bunch of other new ideas. Glad to hear that we are providing a valued service and platform. As ever, if you want to get in contact directly you can find me here.
And, of course, today Episode 4 of the “Thailand in Crisis” vodcast and pocast series will go live. It includes more graphs from Andrew and an interview with a senior Thai professor. Stop by later today to find out more.
Best wishes to all,

I echo jfl’s (c25) recommendation of that essay – which actually contains a great deal more than you might expect from its title.
Thitinan on Thailand’s “Dead-End”
why? Thitinan why reject Thaksin
We would not come this far if there was no coup in 2006.
the Red can think for themselves and you must have missed Central World a lot.

Chula academics call for “return of justice and academic freedom”
Thitinan on Thailand’s “Dead-End”
the money numbers are interesting if you like staring at static pictures
but without transaction details its impossible to draw any real conclusions
like perhaps the Shinwatras or others were doing some land or business deals somewhere… how much of the money went overseas?
for the MPs, did the transactions include their income for example (more in than out) or any number of other transactions
how much related to the rally?
the reds were accepting thousands of minor and some major donations and paying expenses everyday, presumably there is a money trail for that, was this through personal accounts?
as I said, meaningless numbers to feed speculation… (presumably the govt asked the DSI to release them for this reason)
Thitinan on Thailand’s “Dead-End”
” . . . ordinary reds . . . to reject Thaksin is Thailand’s way forward . . .” won’t be easy. Thaksin’s ‘cashrisma’ is a drug no ordinary red could resist . . . in peace or (civil) war.
Just look at the amount presumably spent (withdrawals) by the Thaksin family alone, and their companies, during the Sept29 – May2010 protests-rebellion:
http://www.bangkokpost.com/news/politics/38876/rally-billions-uncovered
Shinawatra family withdrawals . . . . Baht 16,240,000,000
Shinwatra 14 companies . . . . . . . Baht 45,400,000,000
Total withdrawals by Shinawatra family and Shinawatra affiliated companies Baht 61.6 billion.
I read somewhere that the DSI estimated that Baht 150 billion was withdrawn by Thaksin and Thaksin allies during the above period.

Congratulations Andrew and Nich. It seems the site is getting stronger and stronger with time. Please keep up the wonderful work.
Thitinan on Thailand’s “Dead-End”
The challenges for Thailand’s arch-royalist military
Thanks, Chris, I don’t remember these details very well.
The talk has gone quiet, though.
The first thing that comes to mind is that they need more troops on the ground to control reds there, ISOC style, explaining the meaning of life and such.
I’m pretty sure Prem hasn’t run it by Abhisit yet.
New Mandala turns four
I (re-) discovered New Mandala just recently during the Thai Crisis, being disappointed with the dull and uninformed view of especially Germany’s mass media.
So I’d just like to thank you for your efforts to provide a broad spectrum of opinions. I never felt someone was trying to push through a political agenda, by the way.
Keep up the good work, I’ll keep reading!
Thitinan on Thailand’s “Dead-End”

It’s not a state of shock, more like a state of disbelief. Plucking figures out of thin air, are we that gullible? But this is the land of lies, and they expects us to be good little sheep. So, may be.
Thitinan on Thailand’s “Dead-End”
….numbers put forward by the present government?
….a thorough, far-reaching “investigation” to take place?
….might as well hope for conclusive evidence from one of Dr. Pornthip’s GT200 devices that conclusively proves Peter Pan is a miniature ladyboy….
