I commend the academics who conceived and signed their names to this petition for their sincere desire that the violence be immediately halted.
However I feel that the sentiments expressed are rather mild, given the events that took place.
For a much feistier “thalaengkan” I prefer this one, posted on Thai E-News today – the same day as the academics’ press release [http://thaienews.blogspot.com/2010/04/blog-post_9257.html]:
Anothet twist regarding the question of “What Next” >> Dissolution of the Democrat Party.
BT258M DONATON
EC resolves to ban Democrat Party
The Election Commission said Monday it voted 4:1 to request the Constitution Court’s order to dissolve the Democrat Party.

The party was accused of having unlawfully obtained the Bt258-million donations from TPI Polene.
In the next step, the EC will pass on the case to the Office of the Attorney-General to consider before sending the case to the Constitution Court.
The Election Commission team looking into the Democrat Party dissolution case said it still has much work to do, particularly since the report from the Department of Special Investigation contained many holes.
The Court will consider whether the TPI Polene illegally siphoned the Bt258 million from the Financial Institutions Development Fund, since the company was still in rehabilitation.
If so, the then CEO of TPI, Pracha Leophairatana, would be subject to legal action for violating the Securities and Exchange Act of 1992.
If the money was considered an unlawful donation, and the Democrat Party has used it, the party could be disbanded for violating the Political Party Act, he said.
Democrat politicians have insisted the alleged donation never took place. They said money was given to relatives of some party colleagues as part of business dealing, but the party had never obtained it.
Regarding the winding up of the Dems. They are not my favorite party. (Not that there is any party out there worth bothering to score on that criteria. All much of a corrupt arrogant muddle they are.)
Perhaps better the evil we already know. And we know a great deal about Thaksin. Although he could snuff it soon. I doubt it, somehow. He probably has some relatively minor prostate problem that he can buy the best doctors to treat (with dosh stolen from the state at our expense).
As Thaksin is now ….. history in the redshirts and on NM, the above comment shouldn’t be too controversial with the NM rentamob.
@StanG: About the supposed abduction of the CAT CEO, it is now confirmed that those reports were false. See the story from the Bangkok Post below. Many of us know better than to believe any rumor peddled by Tulsathit and his ass clown colleagues at the Nation. You are smart enough to do the same.

Reds go to CAT office

Online news: Breakingnews
Red-shirt leader Arisman Pongruengrong led red-shirt protesters to the head office of CAT Telecom on Monday, demanding to know if caused the disruptions to the broadcast signal of the red-shirts’ People Channel, according to news reports.
He met with CAT’s CEO Jirayuth Rungsrithong, who denied any CAT involvement in the transmission or disruption of the pro-Thaksin PTV signal.
Mr Jirayuth accompanied the red-shirts to the CAT’s telecom network centre in Nonthaburi to prove that CAT did not do anything to disrupt the signal.
He denied reports that he was abducted by the protesters and said he was not taken to their rally stage at Phan Fa Bridge.
On another note, I see the Democrat Party might be officially wound up. Well we always knew it could happen. It is not a big surprise. Suthep is a man who I wouldn’t trust one inch. Will they conform? I think they should. We have too many bloody lawbreakers here already. And if the EC makes a judgement I’m inclined to say it should be put into force.
One wonders at the consequences of the above. Personally speaking, I could live with a majorityThai Ruk Thai government (they would rename it so eventually), with Thaksin back in power with all his assets and some, and a tailor- constitution for mass corruption. I’ve seen it all before, in every recent government. No point in greiving about a democracy that never was.
Jim Taylor, Adelaide is the Udon Thani of Australia. You’ve no connection to elites anywhere down there. Obviously explains your rabid red position. Also, while I’m at it, expect nothing from the Murray. Like the Mekong being more useful to Hong Kong and Bangkok, the Murray is more useful this side of the continent where there is civilisation.
Wat, if one convicts Thaksin, one must convict everyone else.
Leah Hoyt, the most violent side is silent and resides in ample luxury.
Peace be with the consciences of those who pulled their triggers or threw their cocktails.
[…] use of agents-provocateurs yesterday because Thai elites have form in this regard. During the April 2009 crackdown against the red-shirts, a group emerged calling itself the “Glum Rak Pandin Goed” (The Group […]
The red shirts and government both appear to have had identical record and position with regards to negotiations, at least prior to the violence.
The met publicly twice and stated irreconcilable dates for a new election. Then they met privately and apparently stated irreconcilable dates for a new election.
Now that it appears Aphisit is mortally wounded, it certainly makes more sense for them to urge the minor coalition parties to defect, which is what they are doing.
If they achieve this goal, they either get the government directly, or more likely get elections, just as they wanted.
I would suggest the violent side is the one that killed the most people.
I have asked elsewhere so far with no reply… is there any real reason why the Redshirts keep frontally assaulting the Democrat Party and Abhisit, who are down for fighting to the last drop of blood of the last provincial Thai, rather than assaulting some of the other Party bosses in the military engendered coalition… dividing and conquering as is so often said?
These other, lessor godfathers are getting a free ride on the Democrats. Why not demand of Banharn, Newin, and the others from the Redshirt stages just whose side they are on? Why not start taking names?
Surely the present, de facto regime in Bangkok ought to be able to be rent asunder. Doncha’ think? Or is there some procedural reason why this tack cannot be taken?
as you say, the 2007 constitution is an issue. it is intended to limit the stability and strength of any democratic government
also,
the most significant feature of the Democrats plans for their upcoming budget is to secure super funding for their military masters
and the military reshuffle planned for August/September is intended to secure Yellow/amart control
the biggest challenge for a democratic government will be bringing the military under control, delaying thew election until the budget and reshuffle are consummated will make their job even more difficult
Thaksin was removed because he was a threat to independence of the military, this could also be the death of the next democratic government
Let’s forget that Mr. Prem isn’t the only big player on the field here- there is another person that has even more to gain or lose from a very big situation that may or may not occur this year. A person who has fallen out of favour with palace Old Guards like Prem, and who might be (see grenade attacks around the capital and on the troop tent last night) looking for support from the Reds for what is to come.
Personally, I believe the same class identity or sentiment that exists in Bkk, is evident here in CM. This morning, Sunday, after the crackdown, the landlord of my apartment was wearing a red shit, I thought she was showing solidarity with the protesters, but she was adamant that she was not a ‘red shirt’. She too said she was a ‘white shirt’. As I do research at CMU, many professors will make it clear that they may have voted for Thaksin, but they are no longer supporters, and have no affinty with UDD.
How about a letter to the UDD asking them to re-enter into negotiations which they have repeatly refused to do so while the government has offered them negotiations many times already. Or is violence what the UDD wants rather than peaceful resolution?
If we assume both sides had access to weapons, men who were not afraid to use them and a willingness to escalate the situation and you still have a picture of the Army launching an armed assault on a civil rights demonstration. The evidence clearly shows that the Red guards did fire at the military. But one glance at the casualties and its safe to say that the volume of fire coming the other way must have been considerably greater. A few off duty rangers with AK’s may account for some of the Army casualties but unless they opened up on the crowd behind them too, its difficult to see how they can be seen as the principle source of violent deaths and injuries.
nonsense Wat! a judiciary emplaced by coup and amaat- Democrat Party alliance, and as of yet not one shred of actual evidence against Thaksin doing anything to breach the law at the time [aside from some misdemeanor and constructed politically motivated heresay and rumour mongering sprouted by Sondhi Lim and his pals…!!Boy – the bullshit continues about this ex-PM!! let him be. The issues have grown way beyond this pettyness…
BTW/Andrew: how come the petition did not pass down this way in the south?? I know of many colleagues including myself who would have liked to sign this one!
# 52 Jay > “Please stop destroying the people right to protest for democracy.”
“Nation Breaking News: Arisaman Pongruangrong led some 300 motorcyclists to take CAT Telecom CEO Jirayuth Rungsrithong from the CAT Telecom head office at noon Monday.”
While it is probably a fair perspective. It would be more interesting to know the demographics of that little impromptu survey.
The author mentions the university crowd, which in the case of students are frighteningly apathetic towards politics. So maybe these are the majority of the people he asked.
You also have other factors affecting what people say. Many people have strong views but are careful as to whom they reveal them to, as politics has become so decisive. Business leaders don’t want to end up on the “wrong side” etc. etc. So unless you know people well, they are careful what they say. I would suspect this would be the “white shirt” phenomena. I would say this points to increasing divisiveness rather than apathy (well perhaps not in the case of the students).
I would say red support is still very strong but at the moment most people realise that it is happening in Bangkok at present and that there is not much to demonstrate about in Chiang Mai. It would be a bit stupid to expend resources on a battle already won, in the case of Chiang Mai. Plus not much use occupying City Hall (when they seem to have negotiated they can walk in any time), when its Songkran.

War at Khao San
Tulsathit didn’t say CAT’s boss was abducted, neither did Nation’s breaking news story.
I guess someone could say they had a meeting and Jirayuth then “accompanied” Arisaman to give a tour of CAT’s facilities and operations.
Question is – could Jirayuth say no to his “guests”?
What next?
Anothet twist regarding the question of “What Next” >> Dissolution of the Democrat Party.
BT258M DONATON
EC resolves to ban Democrat Party
The Election Commission said Monday it voted 4:1 to request the Constitution Court’s order to dissolve the Democrat Party.
Ads by Google

War at Khao San
@StanG: About the supposed abduction of the CAT CEO, it is now confirmed that those reports were false. See the story from the Bangkok Post below. Many of us know better than to believe any rumor peddled by Tulsathit and his ass clown colleagues at the Nation. You are smart enough to do the same.

Reds go to CAT office
Published: 12/04/2010 at 05:52 PM

Keep talking if you can.

Scholars’ press release and letter
Yokkie,
The red shirts and government both appear to have had identical record and position with regards to negotiations, at least prior to the violence.
What next?

I used to enjoy the Nation weblog, though its a piss poor place for along time, with a lot of insufferable smugness from its main contributors.

I am not really surprised you got banned you would stalk Thanongs blogs incessantly, you just got up his nose.
As for Khamala, you were just an immature, and rather patronising litle girl who wanted to be banned, you got what you wanted.
What next?
thanks, good summary
as you say, the 2007 constitution is an issue. it is intended to limit the stability and strength of any democratic government
also,
the most significant feature of the Democrats plans for their upcoming budget is to secure super funding for their military masters
and the military reshuffle planned for August/September is intended to secure Yellow/amart control
the biggest challenge for a democratic government will be bringing the military under control, delaying thew election until the budget and reshuffle are consummated will make their job even more difficult
Thaksin was removed because he was a threat to independence of the military, this could also be the death of the next democratic government
let us hope somehow the cycle can be broken!
The scene at Phan Fa
Let’s forget that Mr. Prem isn’t the only big player on the field here- there is another person that has even more to gain or lose from a very big situation that may or may not occur this year. A person who has fallen out of favour with palace Old Guards like Prem, and who might be (see grenade attacks around the capital and on the troop tent last night) looking for support from the Reds for what is to come.
Red Shirts in Chiang Mai
Personally, I believe the same class identity or sentiment that exists in Bkk, is evident here in CM. This morning, Sunday, after the crackdown, the landlord of my apartment was wearing a red shit, I thought she was showing solidarity with the protesters, but she was adamant that she was not a ‘red shirt’. She too said she was a ‘white shirt’. As I do research at CMU, many professors will make it clear that they may have voted for Thaksin, but they are no longer supporters, and have no affinty with UDD.
Scholars’ press release and letter
How about a letter to the UDD asking them to re-enter into negotiations which they have repeatly refused to do so while the government has offered them negotiations many times already. Or is violence what the UDD wants rather than peaceful resolution?
War at Khao San
If we assume both sides had access to weapons, men who were not afraid to use them and a willingness to escalate the situation and you still have a picture of the Army launching an armed assault on a civil rights demonstration. The evidence clearly shows that the Red guards did fire at the military. But one glance at the casualties and its safe to say that the volume of fire coming the other way must have been considerably greater. A few off duty rangers with AK’s may account for some of the Army casualties but unless they opened up on the crowd behind them too, its difficult to see how they can be seen as the principle source of violent deaths and injuries.
Scholars’ press release and letter
nonsense Wat! a judiciary emplaced by coup and amaat- Democrat Party alliance, and as of yet not one shred of actual evidence against Thaksin doing anything to breach the law at the time [aside from some misdemeanor and constructed politically motivated heresay and rumour mongering sprouted by Sondhi Lim and his pals…!!Boy – the bullshit continues about this ex-PM!! let him be. The issues have grown way beyond this pettyness…
BTW/Andrew: how come the petition did not pass down this way in the south?? I know of many colleagues including myself who would have liked to sign this one!

Red Shirts in Chiang Mai
