Fascinating photos Srithanonchai. We eagerly await further Reds photo updates from yesterday (9th April) and today. Have they been able to sustain those numbers? How is this Reds “DaoGrajai” strategy around Bangkok and now also at ASEAN summit at Pattaya planned and managed? Why did they decide to ‘retreat’ from PMPrem’s residence? More reports from the ground please? (and where’s Nick our previous embedded Red reporter?)
From my web browsing, it is interesting to note that The Nation has consistently given the highest estimates of the Red crowd over the weeks. Have they turned Red?
Thanks to the Bangkok NM reader for the report. It does seem to affirm my suspicions of the Red crowd as PMThaksin’s ‘sacrificial lamb’. Here he is raging against many of the country’s main institutions and respected figures from the safety/luxury of wherever. The unrelenting attacks on the Privy Councilors is most probably geared towards a military crackdown on an unsuspecting crowd (based on the Bangkok observer above – either that or the message from the stage has been too repetitive over the past weeks). His rhetoric clearly reflects that saying that he will lead the crowd into Bangkok himself if there is a crackdown (Matichon report last night):
IT is extreme cowardice – evil even – to call for people to join the Reds rally and bring their children along while his immediate family has already fled the country (“gone on holiday” Yaowaret says). For many fair-minded observers, this is probably not surprising as it is consistent with PMThaksin’s exploitation of the rural vote to then abuse the electoral victory to his own benefits. A very cold and ruthless business approach of the least investment for the maximum benefits. Red life is indeed cheap.
The Democrats and military has been attacked (by conservative elements and people who rightly worry that things may get out of hand) for not doing much to counter PMThaksin’s and the Red leadership vicious attacks. On this count, Manager even seem to heap praise on their ‘former'(?) archenemy, Mr.Newin and his recent performances!:
Whether the Democrats and military inaction is intentional or not, I suspect it may turn out to be a good move to give total freedom to PMThaksin and the Red elite to expose themselves for what the extreme hypocrites they really are. And, as the government had noted, it is within their democratic rights to differing viewpoints and to organize protests. The challenge is when things gets out of hand – and the question remains how prepared/well-trained in crowd/riot control the police/military are. If the answer is yes, then the ‘street war’ may not be sustained for too much longer (PMThaksin/Reds has nothing new to say and besides, the unclogging of Bangkok’s blocked arteries will surely be very popular amongst the majority). In an atmosphere where the media spaces seems more opened as it is now (sorry foriegn NM readers, the Thai majority clearly don’t care much about LM. They know the rules, they don’t flirt with it, life is ok), and with PMThaksin isolated, former adversaries (‘progressives’ in the Red-Yellow camps) may even join the political-societal reform table to re-negotiate Thailand’s future.
The pro-military and pro-PAD The Nation and even Channel 3 have always downgraded the number of Red Shirts demonstrators. Of course they want to tell the public that Red Shirts have smaller number than the Yellow Shirts. The Red Shirts don’t mind this biased reporting because they know for a fact that they greatly outnumber the Sonthi/Chamlong mob.
The Red Shirts also know that their slogan “Daeng Thang Paendin” (Red Throughout the Land) is nearing reality because the silent Red Shirt majority have come out in droves in the streets. Now proud Thais have shown they can also outdo their Chinese counterpart who earlier have the slogan “Tung Fang Hong” (the East is Red).
Dear sangos,Khine & Hla Oo,
Thanks each of you for the advisory of the Pangsau trip.I have made my plans based on the reports of a local boy of that area who is a student in the department.Khine I shall definitely contact u as the virtual world has brought us together.I feel it is crucial as understanding the north east feels incomplete without Burma from times immemorial till 1937 as a part of British India.we are a part on the same landscape & mindscape & hence I am sentimental about these links.Let us not in the process priviledge on communities contribution over the others.Though Arunachal as not the map as a seperate entity, yet it was the North East Frontier tracts from here recruitments were made in the vicinityof the Nocte & the Adi dominated areas into the labour mobilization of the Stillwell road. They stand as the forgotten people of the forgotten army.Through my Seminar I have come to know that not only were militia’s raised in the Naga hills and Manipur, but in the region closest to the Chin Hills under the Japs,The Lushai Hills & Tripura. The Lushai Scouts were quite well known in the offensive against the Japs in 1945.In the north east the recruitment Kuki levies in the First WW led to a famous rebellion. So guerilla levies were in operation in this region during both the wars.
The red shirt numbers yesterday were a lot less than Wed, according to news reports, but they were certainly deployed effectively in blocking traffic at Victory Monument and at the secondary site, the Sukhumvit-Rama IV intersection at Prakanong. I went past the Prakanong section late last night, fortunately, on the other side of the road. There were only about 150-200 reds and no taxis blocking the road causing a long tail back eastwards. They seemed to be enjoying themselves singing and dancing, perhaps as much as Foreign Minister Kasit did at the airport with the yellows. I thought many looked drunk but none were behaving aggressively. I agree with other posters that Bangkokians won’t be able to tolerate sudden disruptions of the traffic in strategic locations for very long.
“On several occasions?” What about the politics of claiming far inflated attendance figures? Even The Nation had some calculations at that time contrasting the claims with the physical possibilities of protest sites.
Anyway, I would appreciate if you could provide me, and readers, with the list of events (site and date) you refer to, including their respective attendance figures, for future checks with reports published at that time, and in the interest of historical accuracy.
Easy and imediate solution to the problem of red shirt protesters for PM Abisit is to punish those PAD who act against the law and took the two airport. The punishment for the PAD leaders should be death penalty in order that it will set an example of a legal state, the legal state of which PM Abisit promise to bring us.
The red now fell like if the PAD can do something against the law in the name of the “greater good”, then why shouldn’t we (the red shirt) have the same right to do it too. A simple and quickist solution (though not the solution that will put all problems to an end), is thus to bring the PAD who started all these mass to justice, which will bring the red movement to their sense.
I said it is a simple solution, but that is just in theory. In reality, for PM Abisit, it is not that simple because the PAD have a close connection with the Democrat party. And i belive that thailand has not always been a legal state and perhap never will be. So… the innocent bankok communtors like me and my friend at work will continue to suffer, because if the red win this time, the yellow will come back and repeat the same method again ad infinitum.

first, when you intervene on behalf of others,
be careful what you attack/defend/protect.
What do i have to be careful of?
Stephen you make accusations and threats , merely because i post my opinion which is contrary to yours. I have made no threats nor abused you? Learn to play by the rules of common civility. Offering an opinion is not “intervening on behalf of others”.
I concur with the others here, you have posted noting of consequence to support lèse majesté and responding to your inane attacks is merely a waste of time, detracting from the real issue that the Thai government use the law of lèse majesté, to repress not only Thai people but foreigners as well.
It is used to create fear amongst those whom would speak out against wrongs, they use it to legitimize an illegitimate ruler, a man not worthy of the psition he holds.
They use it to promote a false impression of divinity, That this mere mortal is somehow above all others, beyond reproach?
A real king has no need to rule by repression, to rule by fear or to create a false sense of divinity , ie place himself above all others. A real king leads by popular demand, not by fear.
Unfortunately while presented as a popular king the truth , in lèse majesté, has shown he is obviously a very insecure little man not worthy of his position.
The Thai people deserve better.
Charrurat: With these points which seem to show at least a certain mutual understanding, let’s wrap this up and tackle other threads on this blog. Looking around, this has been one of the more cordial exchanges here lately.
Even your last question is not a particularly contentious one, I think. Different people have different priorities. And the judge the sincerity of any of them is a pretty subjective exercise. In politics as in life, maintaining purity is just about impossible.
Chris Baker #54: I wonder if Somsak or anyone else would like to comment on Thaksin’s use of the phrase р╣Ар╕кр╕╡р╕вр╕Зр╕Ыр╕╖р╕Щр╣Бр╕Хр╕Б (sound of gunfire) in his speech last night. He doesn’t know what it ‘means’? He knows exactly?
I must thank Dr.Chris Baker for raising this issue. I admit when I first listened to Thaksin’s speech ‘live’, the phrase didn’t catch my attention. Even after I went back to re-listen to it (following Dr.Baker’s question) I still thought Thaksin used the phrase simply because he was in the “I-am-a-friend-of-Isan-people” mode and the phrase is quite naturally a piece of Isan coloquialism. In other words, Thaksin didn’t mean much and we shouldn’t read much into it. I am still inclined to think so. But now I should draw attention to this news, that some people who are high-up in the power hierarchy apparently took the phrase very seriously.
The current Commander of Royal Thai Air Force yesterday singled out exactly Thaksin’s use of this phrase.
Interestingly, the charge that Thaksin and/or “his people” are “communists” began to be heard quite often in recent days. See for example, this headline by Manager:
When it comes to “6 Tula”, Samak is a fool. But at this point in history, any educated person, professional academic in particular, who is serious about “6 Tula” and wants to say something meaningful about the massacre, but can only manage to cite the case of Samak, as in this post, that person is definitely a bigger fool than Samak.
Let me re-post here, what I wrote at the time of the foolish Dan Rivers interview (foolish on both sides of the interview – Samak and Mr.Rivers):
I wonder if you were able to engage the protesters in a conversation about Thaksin’s leading of these protests and what they thought that meant. Were these students in favor of bringing him back and letting him run things despite his previous record?
Nice stuff Kulap and well said -there are troubles galore. On the positive side there has been lot of individual efforts of getting the move on in this obscure corner(see Khine’s website for instance); of course we are still way off from a freeway along the old stilwell road for reasons all know.
Hla Oo, you got a point all those nostalgic forests will be gone (btw how many many of those pristine trees have escaped the heavy logging in Kachin state?) You are right about Northeast India, the only saving grace being India is a democracy overriding the military. The Ledo road has been upgraded to a 2 lane national highway. But its a dead end. And then there is the more easier competing highway between India and Burma in the Kabaw valley (Moreh-Tamu)
Guess the fate of the Stilwell road(the Indian one) will depend on the level of co-operation between India and China (which can swing either way in these times of recession). And of course with Burma in agreement to the operation of the road.
Stephan: no, not joking, just waiting for you to write something coherent and informed. I can’t debate with you if you say nothing in these categories. You are ranting with no evidence.
Aom, while I agree with your general point, the statement you make about Thais and LM is wrong. Sulak is not in jail. Sondhi Lim is not in jail. Jakkrapob is not in jail. They have been arrested or gave up to the police. You have to ask why some Thais are kept in jail and others not.
You are lucky, Harry, because you are a foreigner. But for Thais whom had been arrested in the same cases like you, they don’t have a chance to be free. I used to believe in human right in Thailand. I used to think that I am lucky to be Thai. But now I know the things which i believed are lies. Tell the world the truth, Harry, the truth that we never have a chance to let the world known.

“A protest held at the Victory Monument may be bad for the Bangkokians who hate it when their lives are disrupted…”
They are bad for the nation and economy as a whole.
What a naive model of economic reality you have.
Exactly what the red shirts envision in the future is the real question here.
Exactly how would Thaksin bring Thailand back to normal operating efficiency if he came back? Get Thailand working in a unified fashion again?
Military intervention looks inevitable as the decades long script of the “tale of two democracies” plays out once again .

The Reds in Bangkok today
It would be a good idea to critically analyse the various forms of violence used as means in the protests of the PAD and the UDD.

P.S.:
Admittedly, I had the second round of PAD protests (occupation of the Government House compound) in mind when I wrote the incriminated sentence.

This “series” by “Dekchai Kimhan” regretably turns out to be getting worse by each new installment.
Closing the streets at Victory Monument
I wonder if you were able to engage the protesters in a conversation about Thaksin’s leading of these protests and what they thought that meant. Were these students in favor of bringing him back and letting him run things despite his previous record?
The Stilwell Road
On lèse majesté
Stephan: no, not joking, just waiting for you to write something coherent and informed. I can’t debate with you if you say nothing in these categories. You are ranting with no evidence.
“Life in a Bangkok prison”
Aom, while I agree with your general point, the statement you make about Thais and LM is wrong. Sulak is not in jail. Sondhi Lim is not in jail. Jakkrapob is not in jail. They have been arrested or gave up to the police. You have to ask why some Thais are kept in jail and others not.
“Life in a Bangkok prison”
You are lucky, Harry, because you are a foreigner. But for Thais whom had been arrested in the same cases like you, they don’t have a chance to be free. I used to believe in human right in Thailand. I used to think that I am lucky to be Thai. But now I know the things which i believed are lies. Tell the world the truth, Harry, the truth that we never have a chance to let the world known.
Best regard,
Aom
