Mr Handley seems intent on demonstrating that despite his years in Thailand he has learned very little about the culture and it’s King. I believe this is consistent with so many westerners that use only the prism of American style democracy to measure other societies. But in this writers case he also demonstrates that he lacks understanding of Thai Buddhism and the differences between the Hindu tradition that it is related to. Further, for a person that is attempting to write a bio of such a historical figure as Thailand’s Monarch he never once mentions the man who has acted as King Bhumipol’s bodyguard for more then 40 years. This General has controlled the elite palace corp and been intimate with the King for decades but, is never mentioned or alluded to in the book. Finally, the author demonstrates that he has little grasp of contemporary Thai history as he attempts to paint Mr Pridi as some great patriot rather then the manipulative, ambitious character that he was. So, it is my view, and I have some first hand knowledge of this topic, the author has played to a Western audience and failed to demonstrate he grasps the reality of the Kings life and of Thai culture in general. Self-sufficiency is not an original ‘Thai message’. It was the bedrock of Lao state attempts to weather the demize of Communism by encouraging every official and his family to open a small shopfront selling candies, a vegetable patch and a chicken coupe. But it was never self-sufficiency that got Lao people through hard times – it was being a member of a large family network for support, being a client of a powerful patron, diversifying trade and income sources, having a relative in the public service – it was ‘reliance on others’.
I wonder if there is (or ever was) a single example of a community that is ‘subistent’ in the purest sense – that it is ‘self-sufficient’ and does not have trade, barter or alternative economic (marriage, relatives, patrons) links to other communities? Seng’s examples are good evidence against the assumption that Laos is somehow ‘outside’ the global economy. Instead, Laos seems to be left out of global ‘recognition’. That is, recognition that its people are eager participants in world affairs. Lao labour (in the hundreds of thousands) is bound up in regional economic and trade networks (mainly in Thailand). Lao elites are shaped by regional and global educational opportunities (in dozens of countries). Remote rural Lao communities are impacted by resource development projects, even if they do not grow cash crops. Lao are affected by regional disasters such as the Asian Tsunami, in which dozens (possibly hundreds) of Lao working in southern Thailand were killed.
Whichever way you look at it, ‘self-sufficiency’ is a message pushed by elites who are in no way interested in being self-sufficient themselves. And it is being pushed on impoverished communities who seem very interested in finding any way they can to participate in the global economy.
Now after a long gap of 25 years if we see the rise of SHAPAWNG YAWNG MANAU POI we can find that it is this festival that have brought so much laurels to our society both in front of domestic and international media. Laos do feel the recessions. Your statements above may be too optimistic with more personal assumption than the actual life here. Here are some examples:
Lao Kips become stronger (11,000 kips per one US$ in 2007 to 8,400 kips per on US$ now). Looks promising Kips, but already giving troubles to some import export companies in keeping their contract commitments to the farmers, no longer afford to pay the farmers the promising prices for their crops especially for corns. Hundred thousands of corn grains stranded in the mountains of Laos just waiting to be destroyed by molds and storage pests. Good prices of corn in 2007 lured many farmers to grow corns in 2008 instead of traditional upland rice. The farmers are now facing tough challenge to cope with their need of rice.
Money economy is every where in this country. Rely on nature and forest products has become the story of the past as all have been exploited by the greedy Chinese and Vietnamese in the past decades.
The recessions direct hit the gold and copper mines mainly run by the Australians which caused resting thousands of the local staff and labors and canceling the contracts of the local suppliers to the mines. Garment factories pay is extremely low, 14 working hours a day can help less than US$ 100 a month to the factory worker.
Youths from the remote villages, all gone to the cities and to Thailand, leaving the villages with the elders and children and leave the paddy lands unploughed.
The cities in Laos are fulled with the internal migrants of youths, prostitution is booming, social instability need fast aids.
Burmese are an emotional people. They will cry as and when they think of their departed loved ones regardless of the question asked and they will laugh and giggle either when they feel apologetic or when they see the funny side of things or simply to make the troube feel lighter. Their main anchor in such upsetting circumstances is their monks and their religion and their irrepressible sense of humour and cheerfulness.
I have just completed this draft and unchecked translation of speech by the Minister of Justice, and would normally keep it with me for about a week to check and polish. However, this lese majeste issue is hot and heavy and things are moving quickly. This translation provides, I believe, some insight into government thinking and how serious they are about it.

Today a month has passed. Mr. Phiraphant Saleeratwipak, Minister of Justice, gave a special interview with Krungthep Thurikij regarding policies dealing with the movement defaming the monarchy through websites and other media up to and including those who committed insults and encroached on the institution, that at this time foreigners are confused and think that this type of issue is a matter of rights and liberty. Therefore media and those concerned must produce a new understanding among them that offense against the monarchy is offense against the kingdom’s security. It’s not a matter of showing opinion or ordinary criticism. But western media they do not attach the same affection for their major institutions as Thais feel affection.

I would like to ask that today, if His Majesty the king were really not good would the World Intellectual Property Organization honor him with a prize as a world leader in intellectual property? Or why does the international patent office in Hungary and South Korea award him prizes? Many Singphos or Jinghpaws integrated into the mainstreams of the nearby ethnic groups, Assamese, Shans, etc. By celebrating the Manau festivals, those missing Jinghpaws are coaxed to joined their relatives and brothers. I think C.C Singpho is one the missing Jinghpaw. It is important to promote the Jinghpaw language in India and Myanmar as I have found the youths are very much adopting the languages of the majority in their regions. I have never been that impressed by Amnesty International – their country reports are never detailed enough, are usually too many months out of date to be of practical use by the time they are published and a lot of the rest of their campaigning seems to be posturing. Tell us why Handley’s long account of different approaches to kingship in Thai traditions related to Buddhism and Hinduism is wrong? Explain the evidence that leads you to draw the conclusion that Handley uses an American prism to analyze the king’s life and times. And tell us why you view Pridi as a “manipulative, ambitious character.” Any one of these topics is worthy of more information and discussion.

Mr Handley seems intent on demonstrating that despite his years in Thailand he has learned very little about the culture and it’s King. I believe this is consistent with so many westerners that use only the prism of American style democracy to measure other societies. But in this writers case he also demonstrates that he lacks understanding of Thai Buddhism and the differences between the Hindu tradition that it is related to. Further, for a person that is attempting to write a bio of such a historical figure as Thailand’s Monarch he never once mentions the man who has acted as King Bhumipol’s bodyguard for more then 40 years. This General has controlled the elite palace corp and been intimate with the King for decades but, is never mentioned or alluded to in the book. Finally, the author demonstrates that he has little grasp of contemporary Thai history as he attempts to paint Mr Pridi as some great patriot rather then the manipulative, ambitious character that he was. So, it is my view, and I have some first hand knowledge of this topic, the author has played to a Western audience and failed to demonstrate he grasps the reality of the Kings life and of Thai culture in general. A boring and inaccurate attempt to cash in on a fascinating topic.

Laos too poor to get any poorer
Self-sufficiency is not an original ‘Thai message’. It was the bedrock of Lao state attempts to weather the demize of Communism by encouraging every official and his family to open a small shopfront selling candies, a vegetable patch and a chicken coupe. But it was never self-sufficiency that got Lao people through hard times – it was being a member of a large family network for support, being a client of a powerful patron, diversifying trade and income sources, having a relative in the public service – it was ‘reliance on others’.
I wonder if there is (or ever was) a single example of a community that is ‘subistent’ in the purest sense – that it is ‘self-sufficient’ and does not have trade, barter or alternative economic (marriage, relatives, patrons) links to other communities? Seng’s examples are good evidence against the assumption that Laos is somehow ‘outside’ the global economy. Instead, Laos seems to be left out of global ‘recognition’. That is, recognition that its people are eager participants in world affairs. Lao labour (in the hundreds of thousands) is bound up in regional economic and trade networks (mainly in Thailand). Lao elites are shaped by regional and global educational opportunities (in dozens of countries). Remote rural Lao communities are impacted by resource development projects, even if they do not grow cash crops. Lao are affected by regional disasters such as the Asian Tsunami, in which dozens (possibly hundreds) of Lao working in southern Thailand were killed.
Whichever way you look at it, ‘self-sufficiency’ is a message pushed by elites who are in no way interested in being self-sufficient themselves. And it is being pushed on impoverished communities who seem very interested in finding any way they can to participate in the global economy.

Laos too poor to get any poorer
Laos do feel the recessions. Your statements above may be too optimistic with more personal assumption than the actual life here. Here are some examples:
Lao Kips become stronger (11,000 kips per one US$ in 2007 to 8,400 kips per on US$ now). Looks promising Kips, but already giving troubles to some import export companies in keeping their contract commitments to the farmers, no longer afford to pay the farmers the promising prices for their crops especially for corns. Hundred thousands of corn grains stranded in the mountains of Laos just waiting to be destroyed by molds and storage pests. Good prices of corn in 2007 lured many farmers to grow corns in 2008 instead of traditional upland rice. The farmers are now facing tough challenge to cope with their need of rice.
Money economy is every where in this country. Rely on nature and forest products has become the story of the past as all have been exploited by the greedy Chinese and Vietnamese in the past decades.
The recessions direct hit the gold and copper mines mainly run by the Australians which caused resting thousands of the local staff and labors and canceling the contracts of the local suppliers to the mines. Garment factories pay is extremely low, 14 working hours a day can help less than US$ 100 a month to the factory worker.
Youths from the remote villages, all gone to the cities and to Thailand, leaving the villages with the elders and children and leave the paddy lands unploughed.
The cities in Laos are fulled with the internal migrants of youths, prostitution is booming, social instability need fast aids.

I would like to ask that today, if His Majesty the king were really not good would the World Intellectual Property Organization honor him with a prize as a world leader in intellectual property? Or why does the international patent office in Hungary and South Korea award him prizes? I have never been that impressed by Amnesty International – their country reports are never detailed enough, are usually too many months out of date to be of practical use by the time they are published and a lot of the rest of their campaigning seems to be posturing. There is, an in this case, a lot of pretending that they are active ‘behind the scenes’ but with not too much to show for it.
