The dreaded f word is now begrudgingly being bandied about even by the bigots though still interpreted to be fragmentation in their own firmament which they themselves daily risk by repression and regressive measures.
The point is to transform a union by coercion to a union of the willing. Not by divide and rule, nor by exclusion or exploitation. Ceasefire capitalism can never be the vehicle to bring an enduring peace to our troubled land.
The ‘end of strife’ lies not in Yangon but in the end of Naypyidaw. Must vote NLD. There is no alternative (TINA).
In nothing that I have written have I ever sought to downplay the discrimination and persecution of the ‘Rohingya’ community in Myanmar. What I have sought to present is the rich kaleidoscope of Muslim ethnicities which have settled in Arakan over decades and indeed centuries, and the concern that many must feel in Myanmar at the contrived emergence since independence of a new, monolithic and highly politicised ethnicity.
History is an unforgiving witness to leaders on both sides of the divide. Some will be swept away by the tidal wave of change they have themselves started. Some will be consigned to the dustbin of history.
Cometh the hour cometh the men and women. Time and tide wait for no man or woman.
The tried and tested Reds Under the Bed scare will immediately follow Islamophobia as the next strategy especially when things get heated up to a crisis point for the incumbent power as history has repeatedly shown the world over.
Time they woke up from this protracted hellish nightmare.
Seize the day, smell the coffee, and reflect on the last half century of military misrule. The last five years have prepared us for burying our country’s shameful past and its perpetrators once and for all.
Tomorrow is another day well worth waking up for to vote NLD. It’s only the dawn of a new Burma if we all make a united effort.
What is the expression we have? It cannot get darker than midnight.
It is academic? clearly it’s not… but this is not scientific journal. In fact, you should expect some personal opinions as mentioned in the about section of the site –> “it provides anecdote, analysis and new perspectives on mainland Southeast Asia”. Im being skeptical with the report, but lets wait until the govt give official response
Evidently the last refuge of the scoundrel is race and religion. Look at them all singing from the same hymn sheet. They can barely disguise what they are really after.
Scare tactics may work on the gullible, the ignorant and the prejudiced. It’s a well coordinated and time honoured strategy used the world over by reactionary forces. Very likely to backfire on the day.
Ma Ba Tha will come and go like a shooting star. It wasn’t born of immaculate conception but a human construct born of manipulative deception.
The question is not whether Indo govt can contact US govt or not, rather it’s more of a question whether Obama considers Indonesia as a strategic partner in the first place. We know that not all world leaders can visit the white house
I agree with “Duncan Graham”, there seems to be few people who strongly supported Luhut here, although we haven’t heard any response from the Gen.. What is also more interesting is the fact that several mainstream indonesia media (detik&kompas) haven’t published this issue yet, maybe they are trying to be careful?
Sorry, The Independent. But keep it short and sweet. Sure even you can manage that. And don’t let it get to you but do try and grow a thick skin even if you’re too old for that. It would help.
Kudos to Ko Soe Win Han for risking more than being called an Islamophobe espescially in the USA.
Kudos to NM editor too for obviously publishing a voice that really been on the ground in Myanmar instead of just western/Autralian academic whose back ground are HR related or reseachers.
Finally the plight of Kala in Yakhine is put into perspective overall citizenry.
I hope Ko Soe WIn HAn will continue hie exposé more often.
As John looks for the one to come, this has been a long journey, Ko Soe Win Han.

The mere fact that “Apologists” in the “Title” is misspelled is enough to call what passes for commentary as potty mouth, but that would be a very grave insult to WCs around the globe.
Everyone supporting NLD/ASSK is thinking and behaving like the day after they voted out the USDP/military, they will be waking up in heaven but in reality, they are in for a rude awakening.
What a thoughtful and politically salient article this is. How refreshing it is to see the author avoid all those sensationalized debates about the violent and systematic persecution of a group of people and instead focus on what middle class people think and feel about the issue. The critique of NGOs and the western media was really hard hitting. It really well drew together post colonial critique with the realities on the ground to concisely argue that unlike everyone else the author knows what is in the best interest of the Rohingya. It is true that calling systematic attempts to exclude a group of people from all the basic necessities of life “genocide” is an unforgivable mistake. It would be much better if we termed it ‘communal violence’ or another flash euphemism – maybe ‘Irregular Instances of Slight Discrimination But Don’t Worry Its Ok’ (IISDBDWIO). If it really turns out there is a ‘genocide’ lets wait until after all the purging has been done and finished before jumping to any conclusions. It was also great that you were not timid to reference self proclaimed expert on the issue – Derek Tonkin. It would be a great shame if people stopped referencing old white male experts just because they are wrong…or racist.

Buehler seems to have been ‘played’ or used by parties, feeding disinformation for their own political ends.
