Certainly, in Malaysia we have since the beginning of this century a process of undermining basic institutions namely justice, administration, religion, etc. However, I think that Thailand is far more advanced in this respect than Malaysia.
Just a word why religion is being undermined: Islam is applied in Malaysia as ethnic marker, and Islamization campaigns are to create and widen ethnic differences. This has become important, because ethnicity
is by far not such a dividing factor as often assumed. By Islamization the elite follows the old british policy of divde and rule in a new framework. This is as dangerous in the long run for unity and stability as the sacralization of monarchy in Thailand. What should unify becomes the reason for fissions.
