Voting is based on Athenian custom. The very same culture that shape the western world. Democracy is considered the best way of living for a state. Even though according to Machiavelli, Democracy cannot live forever (same goes for oligarchy and monarchy) and one day it will turn into Monarchy. So are you trying to say that Indonesian are suppose to be ruled by Monarchy or Oligarchy (same as before right?).
And about smoking. Please note that smoking is not originated from western countries. it originated from incense-burning practice done by babylonian, chinese, and indians. Don’t make prejudice about things. And for your information, in the early 19th century,
Thailand is not “ready for democracy” because there are repeated coups staged by elites to stymie the development of democracy.
To suggest there is something “culturally wrong” with Thailand, preventing it from developing into a democracy is a perpetuation of the worst kinds of Orientalist myths.
Most of people i know (even foreigner) agree that prabowo’s supporters are mostly short tempered people. It’s a public secret that most of rational people in this nation will go for Jokowi. I’m not taking side here since i was stripped from my right to vote (due to indonesia’s stupid system with bad socialization process). Prabowo put himself into a wrong category when he decided to take many people with “problem” on his side (people who are known by public for corruption, short tempered singer with questionable moral, and even someone who bend the law for the favor of his son as a vice president candidate).Public sees that all. the problem is, most of Indonesian has no such education to open their eyes off what is actually happening behind the scene. Jokowi is just playing safe. He hasn’t say anything and his supporter already trashed TVone’s office. I think he knows that saying anything about this matter will trigger something unwanted.
i think he was trying to say that some indonesian has no education thus they swallowed his empty promises. like when he says that he’s going to raise the minimum wage to 6 mil. first year economics student will understand that raising the minimum wage will raise the production cost that will raise the prices and thus will force the people to arrange a strike to demand wage raise. But simple people who think that the cost of a product is merely the material (and forgetting about the cost of labor, marketing, electricity, etc) will just swallow the promise wholly.

This is an excellent piece. It highlights a seizmic shift in politics in Indonesia – that of broadbased campaign microfinance. It is a trend that goes hand in hand with the hundreds or thousands of micro campaigns that sprung up in the last couple of weeks.
The stark difference between fundraising methods also mirrors the starkly different narratives of the two candidates. On the one hand, a multimillionaire patron figure whose campaign tried to demonstrate, like a suitor for a bride, he would be able to provide for the needs of all. On the other was a figure who said “I want to help Indonesians provide for themselves. One candidate used the word “I” repeatedly in debates and the other used “we”.
Much will be written about this campaign but you have made an excellent start. Thanks very much.
Sorry I’m a little confused. If the procedure gives the leaders of each party caucus a veto power over every decision, why wasn’t MD3 struck down immediate?
“The effect of this procedure is to give the leaders of each party caucus a veto power over every decision. The effect of this procedure is to give the leaders of each party caucus a veto power over every decision.”
From an observer’s stand point how do you make this happen?
The university teacher is therefore no longer a teacher and the student no longer someone merely engaged in the learning process but a person who undertakes his own research, while the professor directs his research and supports him in it. (Wilhelm von Humboldt, GS, XIII, p. 261/).
I have had several opportunities during my travels to Thailand to witness aspects of the educational system and I am glad that this piece is being written! My observations led to conceive an educational reality based on how well you can memorize not necessarily how well you comprehend, a military style uniform-up north on certain days teachers wore military style outfits, of course the obvious school uniform of certain hair cuts and specialized dress code, etc.
I do not want to pretend that I am a specialist in Thai studies and I do not want to offend, but as clearly stated the educational system in Thailand needs adjusting.
My question though is really how do you plan to adjust it? how can we implement democracy into a culture that is emphasizes hierarchy within every strand of culture- teachers are above them so respectfully you let them dictate the norm, memorizing information is not a sign of thinking for one’s self it is just doing a task that was given, it seems as though students work to make a teacher proud and a teacher works to make their elite proud whether it be someone within the military network on within the elites so there again is the example of working with in the hierarchy-how to teach someone it is OK to first make yourself proud?
And do you think these high education leaders are concerned about what their elders perceive of them? so they will say one thing to benefit those below to not lose face but will say another to benefit those above to show respect so that everyone is happy..
I apologize if I sound naive or uneducated. I do hope I did not offend anyone.
Thanks for the analysis indeed.
Not knowning much about campaign financing, I must admit that I’m surprised to learned that Jokowi seemed to have had more campaign money at his disposal than Prabowo – though as you pointed out this may well just be on paper.
Even Jokowi indeed had more campaign fuding than Prabowo, I wonder how it is that he seemed to have lost the banner/poster war everywhere. When I noticed the overwhelming presence of Prabowo-Hatta’s campaign banners and posters relative to Jokowi-JK’s, I assumed that it must be the result of Prabowo’s much deeper coffer.
Just to clarify–I thought that the number of parties in Parliament has decreased (20 in 1999, 16 in 2004, 9 in 2009, and 10 in 2014) but the parity of the Parliament has increased. Correct? If that’s the case–which I’m not sure it is–hasn’t the number of veto points from caucus heads actually decreased?
I never knew the DPR worked this way, so this is all very interesting.
As long as the public school student to teacher ratio in the northern provinces remains 40-100% higher than in Bangkok, we can can rest assured that the mummified mentality of Thailand’s top educators has not managed to evolve what so ever. The system is a true national disgrace which goes a long way towards explaining why Thailand is currently the most regressive nation in the region with no end to the smouldering mess in sight.
I’ve just got one question for Rob, when you sold your game plan to mr. Subianto to win the presidential election, did you offer Prabowo ‘money back guarantee’???
I hope not, because he’ll be asking for his money back come 22 July 2014.
It’s scary how many lies and contradictions I found on his statements. He is endangering our democracy and almost half of Indonesians are still brainwashed by his devious propagand and naively believing that Prabowo is winning the election eventhough every sane person can tell that his camp is blatanly, trying to steal Jokowi’s victory.
“While foreign multinationals sucks up the riches and a tiny minority of its citizen of foreign descent controls most of its assets and economy.
And I believe this is what mr. Subianto plans to address.
Seriously??? do you even know who this mr. Subianto is??? he was married to one of the daughters of Suharto, the most corrupt dictator on earth
he did nothing when he was part of the establishment and now he wants to be the champion of anti corruption
“While mr. Widodo prefers to accept that by nature, indigenous Indonesians are incapable of managing their own wealth. Thus, shutting them out of progress and prosperity”
Joe, there was no mention of the boycott in Aspinall’s analysis because it is a non-fiction analysis. There was no boycott. I live in Papua so you can trust me on this. Also for your consideration: neither KNPB nor Radio NZ international meet even the minimal definition of ‘journalism’, the former because they are propagandists, the latter because they’ll publish anything that arrives in their inbox. I could send them a story about how Papuan babies are being served in the Kopassus cafeteria and a day later I will see a link to it on your email list.
Most everything I would say has been said. But I challenge the usual “America is the worlds first democracy”. Uh, no. Arguably the world’s first liberal modern democracy but democracy has existed in lets see, Greece, Iceland and the UK (amongst others) before white people even knew there was an american continent. From that point on the drivel became not worth reading. Ironic that prabowo would complain about western influence and then use an American on his team….
If you want to find the main culprit for the continuous failure to attain any significant advancement in Thai education system, it is advisable to first look at the mainstream media in the country. As a translator working in the field of natural science, I have been constantly annoyed by the fact that almost all editorals can not make a distinction between the terms “species” and “varieties” (i.e. confusingly use the word “Sai-Phan” for both). Pronunciation of english words do not fare any better in the mainstream media. For example, every TV newcaster pronounced the word “bag” as “back” when referring to the effort to build dams with big sand bags during the flood 2 years ago. If one could imagine being a child growing up in such poor learning environment, it would not be surprising how efforts to improve formal education fail to have any real impact.
As Thai media continue to prostitute themselves by putting out a stream of ridiculous propagandas (i.e. injection of public spending in mega-project would immediately swing the economy around in V-shape manner within a few quarters), there is a little for improvement in provision of environments supportive to development of education.
