And those voters that comprised of this 53% don’t qualify as Indonesians? Plus, I didn’t say Indonesians, I said “fellow Indonesians”. Either work on your reading comprehension or simply stop spouting your fallacious arguments; it just won’t work against me.
Israel treated the niece of Hamas Chief, Ismail Haniyeh, for free at Hadassah Hospital. Let me translate that for the synaptically-challenged. Israel made better the relative of a man who wants all Jews killed, at the expense of Jewish taxpayers. The wife of Mahmoud Abbas, PA Chief, was also recently treated by Hadassah Hospital, at Israeli taxpayer’s expense, for a leg infection. The thanks received ? Three dead Israelis. I in no way condone violence, and certainly not any vendetta by Israelis against young Palestinian boys by killing them. However, the perpetual attempt by those who wish to malign Israel is to establish a false synonymy between both parties to the conflict. There is none. On not one single occasion, has any Palestinian expressed any condolence, for a dead Israeli, unlike the three mothers of the three dead Israelis of recent news, all of whom made an attempt to offer condolences to the father of the dead Palestinian boy, and were: 1) Lectured to; 2) Spat at; 3) Ultimately turned away. Palestinians have had four chances since 1948, to compromise and they have not till now. Had the pro-Nazi Grand Mufti of Jerusalem agreed to partition Palestine, Abbas would now have 77 % of the Mandate and
all of Jerusalem, and the Jews, only 23 % of the Mandate, almost the opposite of the current situation. The mere fact that Israeli doctors treat Syrian refugees for free and even treated the niece of a man who has stated, time and again, that “Jews need to be annihilated” suggests some rather different proportionality in the concept of the “Quality of Mercy” between Israelis and Palestinians. I might add that the Palestine
National Charter, created about 44 years ago, continues to read: “The ultimate goal is the replacement of all of Israel, with a State called Palestine, which will stretch, from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea”. But, of course, for “reasonable” and “rational” detractors of Israel, not making peace with those who want to eradicate you, is just simply stubborn and perverse, right ?
Overall, Lynette Ong’s analysis of voting in this post is a good one. Yet, the strawman of ignorant, uninformed rural voters comes out once again:
“Given that urban voters tend to be more educated, and are more exposed to non-mainstream news sources made available with the advent of the Internet, it is logical that they tend to be supporters for the opposition.”
My two objections (beyond the simple urban chauvinism of this statement) are first, that the idea that rural voters are less informed, less educated or (put less ephemistically) stupider than urban voters is repeatedly stated but never demonstrated in analyses like this. From my observations, rural folks in Malaysia have become avid Facebook users among other things (the gap may be generational more that rural/urban).
Second, the logic that urban-educated-informed voters = opposition voters and rural-uneducated-uninformed voters = establishment voters falls apart when one looks, for example, at neighboring Thailand, where rural voters are contesting an entrenched establishment in Bangkok, who in turn resort to military coups supported by the “enlightened” educated and informed urban middle-class.
The one constant is that in both cases, those who don’t like the way rural voters vote (whether for an establishment or for reform) always leap to the ‘rural people are stupid’… or at least ‘uneducated and uninformed’ explanation.
More valuable are analyses of the effectiveness of political processes (e.g. ‘machine’ politics mentioned in the post) and of ideological and interest alignments (e.g. PR has largely ignored rural Malaysia and is ideologically urban-oriented).

I am willing to go see Palestinians/ Syrians in IDC as it is Ramadan and Eid is 2 weeks away. Can I please have their names or registration numbers so I can meet them in
IDC and ask them what they need more specifically? I am Muslim so I can cook Halal food and give them things to celebrate Eid. I have written to PSC directly regarding this as well.
Transparency International’s CPI (Corruption Perceptions Index) for 2013, rated Indonesia 114/175 nations, tied with Egypt. Malaysia came in at 57 (generous) and Brunei at 38 (unbelievable). While, one may quibble with the numbers, and TI does have a solid reputation, it is unlikely that one can turn 114 into 57. There is a reason for Indonesia’s low level of trust, and that reason has existed for a long time. I see nothing in the current election fiasco to indicate that Indonesia’s CPI value will rise substantially, in the near or long term.
Alhasil orang indonesia aja terpecah belah oleh si prabowo dan si jokowi. Lihat aja nanti siapa pemenangnya. Jangan ribut. Lebih baik berdoa buat saudara kita di palestina.
Being rich doesn’t mean it will stop you from commiting corruption, usually, those corruptors we know here are already rich from the first place, and getting richer by corruption. All you need for a corruption is greed
What a pitiful naive supporter of prabowo. Real typical response coated with anger and arrogance. Blinded by the fact that “Indonesia will be feared by neighbouring country if Prabowo is the president”. I think you are the one with low IQ if you think that this image of “Strong Indonesia” is enough to sway the smart voters that really think of the country’s future. Do you realize that prabowo voters are those corrupted individuals and low IQ people that wants indonesia to be feared by neighbouring country?

I agree with you, there are too many smart Indonesian who live their life outside this beloved country, and many of them I think were too long disappointed by condition in Indonesia, a place where smart & creative people got “chopped” by their own government policies.
I think “mental revolution” will be the right choice to change Indonesia positively.

Malaysia – the best predictors of electoral outcomes

Yep, but don’t expect any of the foreign reporters, let alone ANU researchers, to mention that in their writing.

Even by Jokowi’s count he got 47% of the vote. Odd way for Indonesians to express their “hate.”
