Many Indonesians dont read beyond local newspapers that are biased or gossip based, thus to be a Sukarno look alike is a strategy to get voters. I remember as a child in the 80s my neighbor had a huge painting of Sukarno. The reason why PDIP still exist is because of Sukarno. Jokowi is not Sukarno, but he needs Sukarno loyalist.
You just make my day Vichai n. Living in the village in the northeast in the 70’s, I was told that I will never have the beautiful skin that Queen Sirikit has. The man (he may have been a commie, though) told me that Queen Sirikit had truck-load of fresh milk delivered to the palace daily for her bathing. I still remember that conversation and still wondering if this practice of daily bathing in fresh milk was true. The 70’s era was full of disease and famine, especially in the north/northeast. I have raised “the question” in my mind. As articulate a person as you are, I am sure you can guess.
Mr Carey, Which ‘annihilation campaign’ on Matebian do you mean? Fretilin’s mass starvation of the people or TNI [ABRI’s]war against Fretilin to save the people? You mean the kidnap of people from dozens of villages by Fretilin, who were holding them hostage in the highlands, with no source of food production? You mean the people Fretilin murdered for being guilty of possessing a bar of soap or a pair of shoes, because that proved contact with the town, hence with Indonesia?
Let me tell you the story of a former Fretilin village head from Viqueque who took his people up to Matebian. When senior Fretilin cadre gave him Marxist, anti Church literature to indoctrinate his people, he started thinking how to get out. He sent a courier down to town to tell the Indonesians what he was doing. Then he cut his leg with a parang and used it as an excuse to lag behind with his people during the next forced march. When far enough behind, down to town they went and were welcomed. There are plenty more like him who tell similar stories. Prabowo could probably introduce you to a few of these guys. Why don’t you ask him?
I’m neither a fan or critic of Carey, but I don’t understand why some people are disappointed with his video appearance or his online responses. It’s already a long time common-practice in Indonesia for academics to publicly promote their financial patrons. It’s pure utilitarianism, which is also a moral standpoint in itself. Yes, the whole ‘Trahison des Clercs’ aspect is disgusting to some, but overly-criticising Carey’s position also borders on ditching objectivism. Indonesians are not stupid. They know what Carey’s deal is the moment his mug is on that video. Objective critics should take potshots at his work and methods instead of his affiliation.
If it is so, the ringwraiths’ arms must be very very long indeed! Unfortunately for the coup makers, the law can only be used to oppress the Thai people in Thailand.
Should you not see yourself first and foremost as a human being? You must be from Planet Thailand! Are you saying that if you are not Asian, you are not capable of being a moral individual? Have you ever seen Pope Francis, one of the most powerful individuals, bathe and kiss the feet of beggars? I can think of at least 15 countries that I and most of the regular readers of the New Mandala feel that they have better living conditions and stability than Thailand; but we would never attach “specialness” to those countries as you have attached this term to Thailand.

An excellent book, but unless I missed it, I did not see much on the evolution of ─Рс║бo Cao ─Р├аi theology and practice, and how it changed, from the pre-war French period, in the 1920s, up to contemporary Vietnam. Readers will be familiar with Confucianism, Taoism, Catholicism and, perhaps Islam, among the Cham minority. They may be somewhat less knowledgeable about ─Рс║бo Cao ─Р├аi (─Рс║бi ─Рс║бo Tam Kс╗│ Phс╗Х ─Рс╗Щ) and Vietnamese Thanism. More analysis of this indigenous Vietnamese religion would be most interesting.
Thai#10 has her head in the sand, or brainwashed by the neofascist amaat-military alliance. The real problem is that the ancien regime is really shit scared of democracy as it is goin to be on the losing side when certain changes come about. It has succesfully put thaksin up through persistent media propaganda as a “fall guy” because, ironically, his government was so good – e.g. decentralisation and in equitable resource allocations (hitherto tightly held by a few in the centre). As I wrote eight years ago: it is all about the self-serving interests, a few who are prepared to bring the whole country down, who are prepared to lie and cheat to get what they want and take from the electorate.
…yeah sure… and this “be friend together” is the reason why you call someone with darker skin or Lao accent a “buffalo”, that’s why you deny them the right to vote for the government they want, that’s why you look down on Indians and Africans.
Criticizing your motherland doesn’t mean that you don’t love it, in fact it only can get better with reasonable criticism, eulogies have never led to improvement.
The Thai king is the richest monarch of the world and the richest Thai, his political stance towards some of the unsavory dictators of the Thai history (for example Thanom and Sarit) can be called questionable at best and some members of his family lack impartiality in the current political conflict to a degree that is definitely not acceptable in a constitutional monarchy.
…or as Public Enemy would say: “Don’t Believe the Hype!”
Restriction to information and prosecution anyone who dares to criticize the Royal family is a crime punishing up to 15 years. Hmm, how is that not different than North Korea? Thailand is one of the poorest countries in the world but they have the richest king in the world. Have you ask yourself honest…really why is that?
Why would anybody need a bag over their head when 14 international news channels are blocked on Thai satellite and cable platforms? In what other country is that happening? Perhaps North Korea? Thailand may look instead to China, but there are few friends of feudal society there.
All that the Rose say┬┤s is true. The king is the richest royal in the world. Forbes magazine has said it year after year.
Vichai n is a Troll that say┬┤s anything and lies constantly.

But nobody in Thailand can see or look up true information about the truth.
Talking about North Korea and Thailand in the same sentence is no longer far from the truth. The Army, Elite, Democrats, Yellow (same thing really) are only there to protect their interests on the cost of the majority. This and the succession (king is very likely dead) is the true reason for the coup.

All valid points but too optimistic in assuming the powers that be will allow an unrigged election anytime soon. I think it will be a very long wait.
