The contiguous border. that is internationally recognized and legitimized by UN , that contain Myanmar is under the jurisdiction of the Myanmar government.
The SPDC being the de facto government then and now is entitled to define citizenship, Residency status or visitation right inside Myanmar.
The issue of which ethnic group by any known name is legitimate resident of a country without citizenship, approved residency status or visitation rights are none of BBC business, Period.
Using derogatory terms by anyone to claim and make irrelevant issues seem important, minimized and detract everyone from the ongoing sufferings of all citizenry, under present government knavery, as well as west useless careless, ongoing all talk no action engagement.
The beginning of this irritated issue is that Ann Jones put the rohingya as the icon of Rakhine ,which is one significant state of our burma. Why did she do that ? She should be work as a professional journalist as part of BBC and also should have sense to be moderated usage. How arrogant and careless to other nationalism she is!!! Rohingya would not be never ever real burmease ethic as everyone accept !!!
”The main objective of the rebellion was to absorb the western frontier of Burma into East Pakistan. The newspaper, On May 18, 1949, The Hindustan Standard newspaper, reported about the following about the Mujahids.
“A dangerous aspect of this fighting is its international aspect: the Moslem insurgents have been carrying the Pakistani flag, and many of them clamor for the incorporation of this end of Arakan with Pakistan. It was suspected that they drew arms from across the border; the Government, however, is now satisfied that their rifles and ammunition are old stocks, left behind by the Japanese and British…. The great majority of Arakan Moslems are said to be really Pakistanis from Chittagong, even if they have been settled here for a generation. Out of the 130,000 here, 80,000 are still Pakistani citizens.”'[8]
[8] The Newspaper cutting is attached to weekly report No. 21 for the period ending 28th May, 1949, from the Deputy High Commissioner for the United Kingdom in in Pakistan, Dacca (The National Archives, London: 2-SEA 60/611: DO 196/133).
‘Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, the Foreign Minister of Pakistan, visited Burma from January 18 to 21, 1964. In his statement he said:
“The Moslems in that portion of Arakan which adjoins with East Pakistan number about 400,000 and have lived there for generations and have acquired Burmese nationality. But they are patently of Pakistani origin and occasionally some Pakistani cross into Arakan illegally and mingled with the population. As part of drive to detect these illegal immigrants the local Burmese authorities have for some time employ extremely oppressive measures. The Pakistan Government is anxious that these Arakanese Moslems should not be goaded into leaving Burma and taking refuge in East Pakistan which cannot support them. Mr. Bhutto therefore urged the Burmese to modify their attitude towards these people and offered the maximum cooperation in dealing with any genuine illegal immigrants…. Ali Bhutto expressed his belief that the Burmese government would solve the question of Muslims in Arakan with sympathetic consideration and assured that Pakistan on its part would be glad to extend maximum cooperation in any way possible consistent with its policy of good neighborly relations.[17]”’

As long as USA has standing resolutions for NLD/DASSK and against everything else, the changes will be infinitesimal.
Mostly smoke and mirror to continue present policy of control through “circle the wagon” mentality.
DASSK is just another within this circle, evidently impotent rather avoiding being politically molested again.
The Chinese has deftly learned, without the burden of any dogmas, to enter and exit the circle at will, albeit with minimal benefit to the citizenry and maximal benefit to themselves and the military.
Not until, the west give up its dogmas to enter the circle, then the the changes be accelerated that can benefit the citizenry more than the Chinese and the N Koreans.
There is nothing wrong about them celebrating. If there is something wrong, it was because the King’s daughter Chulabhorn said dramatically in an interview that she visited her father and “saw her father spending five hours watching TV seeing people suffering from the flood, and feels very sad”. Then not even a day passed when these photos arrived on FB, suggesting that the King was not actually watching TV, seeing the flood for five hours like Chulabhorn said. He in fact was having a good time celebrating his dog’s birthday.
Lesson to be learned for Chulabhorn: next time, if she wants to make up a heartfelt story to fool the Thais, she should let the King’s doctor know first what she is about to say. So there won’be any blatant contradiction!
We are no better than BBC the supporter of useless careless sanction if we get bogged down on proving right or wrong BBC’s using useless careless prejudices.
Every borders of any country except, may be Australia has problems with immigration. In good times no one care much about citizenship or claiming the community as separate entity only during trying time does these factors come into play.
The present trying time is the result of the SPDC as well as the west still ongoing useless careless sanction.
I lived and worked in Lao for nearly eight years. During this time, I became intimately familiar of the Lao culture and the socio-economic reality there. With this knowledge, I would like to provide a collective -response to the above comments.
The economic status of the people is improving, at least in Vientiane. For example, I witnessed my brother-in-law’s monthly income increase from approximately $30 to $500 in just five years (with the same employer). Is this so for all? No. While the rising tide generally elevates all, it will drown some. This is the unfortunate reality of advancement.
The Lao people will not be changed or tainted to any significant degree by westernization or any other -ization. They are true to being Lao regardless of their new-found love for iphones and the like.
Much of Lao’s environmental treasures are in danger; however, many Western and Asian organizations are doing much to improve that.
Similarly, I disagree that INGO’s have been entirely unsuccessful in making improvements in Lao. A majorly significant one is in transparency and realization of what corruption does to every citizen that I witnessed occur in Lao. Police officers will no longer accept on-the-spot payment for traffic violations (aka bribery) and officials no longer expect “envelopes” for more expedient service. There were many failures in the past, but this new attitude promises much success in the future.
I could say so much more. This, however, will suffice for now.
Add a Comment? Given the contents of the post, surely that should read: Add a Frivolous Comment. An invitation to an exhibition of work by ‘Bangkok Noir artist Chris Coles.’ Well, well.
What I think we first need to establish is whether this fellow has formally lodged a deed poll registering his name, in full, as ‘Bangkok Noir artist Chris Coles,’ with the relevant bureaucratic authority or, to use that even more hideous term, instrumentality?
Having successfully done so the gentleman in question could, I suppose, be referred to as ‘artist’ , but only by those engaged in a conversation in which this particular individual had some role. In other words, ‘artist’ used as a variant of the third person pronoun, singular. However, in any other circumstances, it would be totally inappropriate. Why?
(As a preface to the answer we require some sense of the sensibility on display here: think Maccas, and some sort of burger laden with the lot, then scrape it all off the bun) The ‘works’ featured in the post are down there (where? You know where!) with the daubings of the dullest and least inspired graffitists, rather than being art. Well, art in any sense other than the supremely banal – (ie. the ‘f’ variety).
For all you Bangkok nighthawks out there (past and present) do these offerings, if that’s how you can describe them, strike a chord, hit the spot, or tickle your fancy (whatever that means; is yours the same as mine, etc. etc)? This dude hasn’t even given us one drop of sweat off his balls. Limp man, very limp. Sort of retro (haven’t we all seen this sort of visual manure ad nauseum?), even the Thai hip-hop was on the nose and added sweet FA to the graphic interface.
Maybe CC, as I think he should take to calling himself, had a few nights up his sleeve in the ‘kok, dropped a couple of tabs of dodgy Russian ‘e’, got out his crayons and gouache and let it rip, as best he could which, as I’ve just indicated, wasn’t much to write home about.
I do have one suggestion though. There’s a Thai painter, of sorts, by the name of Lek – whose oeuvre is not wholly dissimilar to this hapless Bangkok Noi character. Perhaps they could stage a joint exhibition together at the Convention Centre. This could certainly lift CC’s profile and he could rest assured that the show would receive the most stupendous, glowing reception this side of the Milky Way. You could bet your last satang on it brother.
My colonial master have made Burma one of the most beautiful country in the world and was considered as third most rich in Asia that time .What your Fascist Master Ne Win did for you . Do you still have bad smelling when you travel in Rangoon city ????I am sure your masters built so many temples in Arakan With Rohingya Muslims donation and bribe .They can really have a wonderful time and enjoy the service they get from your local women in temples .
It’s elementary. The British got their first toehold in Bengal before they took the whole of India. So your colonial masters got the term Mug from the Bengali.
The Burmese term kala used to apply to white Europeans and Indians alike, the latter first for obvious reasons. The Europeans were later distinguished by the suffix hpyu (white).
