A student at Chula did a MA or PhD on Thong-in’s political career about 15 years ago – I think Chalong was the supervisor. I only scimmed through the text of it myself (my copy is in Brisbane in storage), but I recommend you speak to the History Department staff for further details. I haven’t been near Chula for at least a decade. There were a few books published in Thai about the Isan deputies who were arrested and killed. With regards to Thong-in’s Lao wife, I have never heard the Na Champasak family make mention of the link to Thong-in. The Na Champasak family is a big one so maybe Thong-in’s wife was just a distant cousin rather than some princess.
Thanks to all of you for this conversation. It helps someone like me, who is trying to better understand the situation around Dong Yai forest and Nam Put village in the early 90’s. I am wondering if anyone can recommend material, in English, sorry, that would cover these topics on that area in particular. When I talk with folks around those parts, in terms of the issues of evictions, I get different stories, perhaps due to the complex politics of the place at that time. I am not sure if such a query is appropriate for this venue. If not, please excuse me. [email protected]
Rather than being a referendum on Thaksin, I think the more critical issue in this election is whether the electorate approves of the state killing citizens.
Whilst an Abhisit victory would give him some legitimacy (disputable anyway after all the rigging in his favour), the more serious implication is that a vote for the Democrats, PJT, CTP parties is also effectively a tick of approval to the time honored tradition of Thai military killing citizens.
And does anyone have any information about Thong-in Puriphat, the MP from Ubon who was aligned with Tieng Sirikhan and married to a member of the Na Champassak family? Thong-in was assassinated with three other Thai MPs from the northeast after being linked with Pridi after his attempted coup.
Thailand’s LM are supposed to cover ALL Royals in the world(per royalist views). I thought there was a view that it actually covered Bhuthan’s prince Jigmy a while back.
Not that it proves anything one way or another, but I thought I’d pass on the following which I came across in a very long NYT article from 1989. The paper’s then Bangkok correspondent Barbara Crossette (based in New Delhi as bureau chief) was granted an interview with HM:
“The interview – the first the King has given to a foreign newspaper – is held in the upper room of the Swiss chalet overlooking the reservoir. In a country of elaborate court rituals, where citizens prostrate themselves when they are presented to him, King Bhumibol quickly puts me at ease. Still wearing his military uniform, he dispels any doubt as to the proper way to greet him by walking toward me and extending his hand. We sit down at a small, wooden table and he answers my questions forthrightly and courteously, prolonging the interview beyond the half-hour set by palace aides.”
a prominent historian in thailand just reminded me that although Rama V discouraged this show of utter deference to the monarch it was just to show to the west how progressive and modern Chulalongkorn was…so it was of course discouraged in front of western dignitaries but somehow continued for thais /until it reached its normative resplendence in Sarit’s time – or after the downfall of the People’s Party, (though presumably seemingly not always applied to the charismatic Sarit himself, with a photograph in Thak’s book “The Politics of Despotic Paternalism” showing him sitting on a chair talking to the king).
Aajaan Somsak #9 Is there any record of a reply from phuumiphon to Sarit regarding this correspondence? On a broader note, has the king ever shown any dislike for
extra-judicial executions? He has of course been famously non-judgmental regarding the massacres which have littered his reign.
In a perfect world, or even a sensible world, you would be right, the good princess is not covered by the ridiculous LM mechanism (I say mechanism rather than law because in Thailand, judges try to consider what is best ‘under the circumstances’, rather than administering the law. It is one of the major failings of Thailand). There is abundant evidence of this.
Flowing more or less directly from this principle, the courts are likely to follow the lead of the military and consider that LM has occurred because the criticisms of the princess, and an implicit criticism of the King and Queen.
Not legal as you and I would understand it, and not even sensible really, given the current major uprising against this piece of Thai culture, however Thais are must more cunning than smart, and almost any machination that would not fool a 12-year-old in the West, is likely to be accepted without demur by the Thai people, such has been the success of the propaganda from the military and the Palace.
Remember the wonderful Thai principle “Good people can do no wrong”? All that remains is to decide who the ‘good people’ are, and that is down to Prem and the Palace and their armed forces enforcers.
I doubt it will include Somsak.
But no matter, one rarely gets to see a monarchy and its elites committing suicide, and it is somewhat compelling viewing. Glad I’m not still there really.
OK, so this letter is openly critical of Princess Chulabhorn, and contrasts her lack of sympathy for the 91 dead and 2000 injured/wounded from April-May 2011 with praise of Princess Sirindhorn for her comments about the seriousness of loss of life occurring during the events of May 1992. However, how can this be contrued as LM when he specifically limits and directs his criticism to her (as one academic to another), and she is not covered by the LM law as she is neither head of state nor the heir apparent?
If Chulalongkorn abolished prostration, then why do so many of the loyal subjects line up every October 23rd to protrate themselves in front of his Equestrian Statue? Are they showing respect for him by disobeying his edict?
The history syllabus is not goin to get better anytime soon. The review board formed by the govt has an ultra malay (Perkasa member) as the deputy director! Her first statement ;
“I do not expect these members who do not undestand the concept of Ketuanan Melayu (Malay supremacy) to understand the history being taught”
Let us take a minute to examine the true meaning of prostration (grovelling). It was the traditional position of execution. The back of the neck was offered to the sword or axe, or the thinnest part of the skull to the club. The gesture means, “You, my lord, have the power of life or death over me.” For a high official, a general or a judge for example, it means, “You may have me killed if I ever do anything to displease you.” It is a declaration that the master has the right of summary execution, the basis of the master-slave relationship. When all courtiers grovel, it becomes, by way of induction, a declaration that the king has the right of summary execution over all his people. In an organisation as large as the state, this authority is systematically delegated. The high official advises the king as to who should be done away with. The powerful local lord who has declared his loyalty and provides soldiers for the king is granted the right of summary execution over the people of his territory: the loyal slave-master over his slaves. The king’s armed slaves (the military) are delegated the right of summary execution over people who refuse to take orders from them. Professional hit men are protected because they are the executioners employed by powerful people loyal to the king.
Grovelling is an evil act because it corrupts and hardens the heart of the person honoured. It is despised in civilised countries because it is a declaration of welcome to tyranny.
First of all, allow me to take this opportunity to thank Aj.Andrew, Aj.Nicolas and all those involved with New Mandala websites (regular writers, guess contributors, readers) for all kinds of support given to me during the past month. Thanks also to Michael Sloggett who translated my Open Letters to Princess Chulaborn. Without your support, I would have, quite possibly, been locked up already. I’m still at least ‘free’, though not to the extent that would allow me to write as freely as I used to. The legal proceeding against me, initiated by the army, is bad enough; but it’s the ‘extra-legal’ that I and most of my friends I talked to, feel particularly concerned. For some perverse reasons, some people in the ‘establishment’ seem to think that I am part of a ‘movement’ or a conspiracy to overthrow the monarchy. Just a few days ago, the DSI Chief had just resurrected the so-called ‘Overthrow the Monarchy Network’, which, as many of you know, I am supposed to belong to, as ‘chief ideologist’. See report of his news conference here (in Thai): http://www.manager.co.th/Crime/ViewNews.aspx?NewsID=9540000061885
Perhaps I shouldn’t be writing anything here, in public, at the moment (as all my friends have suggested). But the issue of Khrong Chandawong’s execution is so interesting and I do have something that may be of interest to New Mandala readers. I’d like to thank Khun David Blake for reminding me of the 50th anniversary of the execution. I must confess that I for one completely forgot that it’s coming up in the next few days.
Below I reproduce part of the article I wrote a few years ago on the execution. (The full article is in my own blog, which I feel it’s necessary to close for the time being.) I apologize that it’s entirely in Thai and I have no time to provide translation. But I will give a short description what it’s about.
– On 30 May 1961 Sarit brought the motion to use the notoreous Article 17 to execute Khrang and Thongphan to the Cabinet meeting for approval. (The Article gave the PM the power to do anything, including executing people without any legal process whatsoever.) There’s some significant in this. On two previous occasions when he used the Article to execute two suspected ‘Communists’, Mr.Sila Wongsin and Mr.Supphachai Srisati, Sarit felt necessary to ask the Cabinet twice, the first time for approval, the second for reconsideration/affirmation. (The case of Mr.Sila was brought to the Cabinet on 21 and 26 June 1960; that of Mr.Supphachai on 1 and 6 July 1960.) But in the case of Khrong and Thongphan, Sarit summitted the issue to the Cabinet only once, on 31 May 1961. Quite possibly, he now got ‘comfortable’ with exercising this kind of power: the execution of Mr.Ruam Wongphan, another suspected Communist (he was actually a member of the Communist Party Politburo; Khrong and Thongphan, as far as I remember, were not even party members) the following year also passed through the Cabinet only once.
– Sarit read to the Cabinet a report of police investigation detailing Khrong’s and Thongphan’s alledged Communit activities. I provide extracts of the report below. Six top police officers including the acting Police Chief, Chief of the Security Police (the so-called “san-ti-ban’), Deputy Chief of the Border Patrol Police, as well as several police officers attained the Cabinet meeting to further explain the case and answer question. Tape records of police interrogation of Khrong and other suspects were played.
– The day after the execution (i.e. on 1 Juse 1961), Sarit wrote a letter to His Majesty the King. In the letter he provided an ‘analysis’ of why the Northeast (Isan) more than any other regions, had seen movements of rebellions and separatists. I provide the full text of this very interesting letter below. In the last paragraph of the letter, Sarit told HM the King how Khrong, during his Communist propaganda activity to his followers, had attacked both HM the King and HM the Queen personally. I do have to censor part of the sentences Sarit described what Khrong was alledged to have said about the King and the Queen. (The fact that Sarit was able to repeat such offensive wordings to the King is quite astonishing to me.)

Martin,
I think Thong-in’s wife was a significant member of the Na Champassak family, but I am not entirely clear.
What is Chalong’s last name, and is he faculty in the history department at Chula?

Killings at Wat Pathum Wanaram
Does this confirm Pathumwan’s law?
The propensity of the royal Thai Army to kill it’s citizens is 365 days quicker than to reward itself with a doubled budget?
Like Godwins law but no Nazis…wait a minute.
