There’s nothing to prevent you from going over and giving assistance. There isn’t one law on the books that can be enforced, regardless of what some people might tell you.
If there were, thousands of American jews would be in prison for serving in the Israeli army.
Not one American was ever prosecuted for fighting in Rhodesia.
Not one American was prosecuted for serving in the French Foreign Legion.
Or in the Canadian and British armies in WWI and WWII.
If you feel that you have something to offer them, go over and do it.
By the way, you DON’T need to buy any book on how to get there and make contact with the right people.
I also wonder whether the current American Ambassador in Bangkok would ever speculate on consultations with the “king’s astrologers” in his official communications.
Why not? It’s well known that Richard Nixon consulted astrologer Jeane Dixon, as did Nancy and Ronald Reagan. It seems to me that “magic” and “voodoo” are just as influential in the American corridors of power as they are in the Thai.
I understand that Americans cannot be recruited to fight. But what is the regulation on assisting in such fields as tactics, weapon useage and basic combat knowledge. I am well schooled in all of these and would like to do as much as possible to assist in the fight. I am an Iraq war veteran, and feel confident that I would be able to give some assistance.
I’d say Pam M’s points are interesting and debatable (aside from the silly rant about this web site, which is contradicted ipso facto by the publication of Pam M’s comments).
But let’s bring the argument up to the present day. How much stability is afforded when a long-reigning monarch becomes weakened, in this case by age and attendant ill health? Looked at from a global perspective of the last century or so, or a Thai perspective going back several dynasties, wouldn’t one be hard-pressed to argue that the royal system operates well under such stresses? And the transition process hasn’t been tested here for more than half a century — when the world was quite a different place.
This is a very good and inside article. So sad that we cannot find such a good report (& dedicate reporter) like Nick in Thailand. The news in Thailand is now sadly & completely different from what Nick report. The red’s TV station has been closed… I hope that the truth like this will be available to my Thai friends (who could not reach these kind of news and wrongly believe in what Thai media told them)…
Well, if you’ve got money to pay foreign strategists and spin doctors, of course you can change tack and think up new packaging to try and bounce back when you have just hit a brick wall, after the army was so unsporting as to divert from the script and refrain from shooting down truck loads of your naive “baan nok” foot soldiers. But this seems to be aimed at foreign opinion, as local opinion is all for blowing away suspected drug dealers, even if they are just secretive lottery winners, 70 year old women or 9 year old boys, and definitely in favour of a hard line against the ungrateful Muslim “khaeks” in the deep South who so stubbornly refuse to see the benefits of Siamese colonial rule. It is hard to see how this desperate move will win much support at home or abroad but this is a war of attrition to be fought on any front and by any means you can afford, however implausible it may appear.

Thailand is rich in resources. Agricultural, food, natural gas, labors.
If Thailand goes full stream development with infrastructures, politically stable, clean food-good taste, less pollution.
Do you think that our neighbors love to see that? I don’t think so.

May agree with the job as Minister, but no excuse for the supreme council position. BTW, Rafidah created the AP for cars and made a bunch of cronies very rich doing basically nothing. It is wealth creation like this that has proved very unpopular, even amongst the “unconnected” Malays.
Artificial wealth creation which requires no input nor work simply decreases the efficiency of the economy. It has to come from somewhere, you cannot create something out of nothing.
Yes, Sidh, the 76 billion baht is a clearly key issue. Thaksin quite possibly has another US$1 billion or so squirrelled away offshore which should be more than enough to finance revolutionary activities for some time (the Songkran attacks on Pattaya and Bangkok probably only cost him under US$30 million as they were cut short and probably didn’t use up the entire budget). However, it is the 76 billion that is visible to red shirt and Pheua Thai leaders, who might lose heart if it is gone. They wouldn’t know how much is offshore and how much of that Thaksin would be willing to stake them, if the 76 billion is irretrievably gone, whereas the 76 billion is good collateral for all kinds of promises while it is still there shining at the end of the rainbow. We can expect to see some desperate acts in the near future.
On a positive note, if the Supreme Court rules definitively against him over the 76 billion, it should be able to sequester the money to the Treasury Department, so that it can be utilised, unlike Thanom’s frozen assets that were argued over in the courts for 30 years. Given the state of the economy, the money would come in handy to reduce foreign borrowings to finance fiscal stimulus. Since Thaksin has criticized the government over its plan to borrow from abroad, they would no doubt be happy to heed his advice and put this domestic source of funding to good use instead, or perhaps it could be distributed direct to villages as an edible benefit of democracy under constitutional monarchy.

Since I don’t have the 21 October issue with me. I’d be grateful if Dekchai Kimhan could check whether it’s the same report as one printed in the 22 October as follows:
All true and to the point. Just one note about Rafidah Aziz, talking from personal experience, she is probably one of the best ministers that the cabinet had. Very effective in handling her job and created a very effective ministry. So she really was an asset to the country and Dr M was right in the choice.
Thanks Jim #6. On the “unscrupulous Thai media”, I am of the view that actually works as much the other way. I see it as also PMThaksin’s conscious self-construction in Thai media space of a “PhuMeeBoon” – a reincarnated person of very high merit and power such as a former Siamese king would be ideal. This is very important in Thai political space, characterized by deeply held believes in the supernatural.
It is only consistent with his penchant for risk taking. He may offend part of Thai society, but at the same time he is gaining magical influence over another – possibly much larger Thai audience. That is his ‘profit’.
On the 1997 Constitution, it was for PMThaksin, a worthless piece of toilet paper – once the Constitutional Courts let him off with a slap on the hand for his assets concealment “honest mistake” in 2001. He clearly had little respect for it since…
I agree, we should not let this thing die down, in fact, we should make it as loud as possible. Suvicha is not alone, his children and his parents have to count on him. By jailing Suvicha, they are slowly killing his whole family. If you look deeply into all these cases, you will find how cruelly these families were punished. I only hope that New Mandala would not stop digging and print us with these kind of articles.
We are witnessing a wholesale PMThaksin, Pheu Thai, Red Elite PR reinvention. PMThaksin now claims he is a man of peace (the Thai Nelson Mandela), Pheu Thai are advocating for Human Rights. They are all fighting for “True Democracy” against an oppressive, “totalitarian government”.
Thairath’s editorial today asks very pointed questions of where were these TRT/PPP/PT Human Rights advocates during The War on Drugs, Krue-sae, Takbai, Sabai-Yoi, Somchai Neelapaijit’s disappearance???:
“In fact, it is nothing short of miraculous that it didn’t happen.” I agree Portman#28 – I was resigned to an all out civil war in the streets of Bangkok (a scenario, which you stated would have forced HMK’s hand to intervene in accordance to PMThaksin’s well laid out script). Foreign commentators may laugh at me when I say that there must be some “magic” in all this (and I heard that PMThaksin has consulted astrologers for the dates to carry out this urban offensive – and that it coincided with a time of weakness of Bangkok’s “Duang Muang”).
And as you said, he will inevitably stir more trouble ahead. I suspect it will be close to the date the 70 billion baht assets seizure case will be decided. That is, essentially, PMThaksin’s price for Thai Democracy that he has held hostage.
Portman # 5 – “… it is the only phrase book that covers foul or naughty Thai language in depth. You don’t have to use these phrases but, like it or not, you will hear them, if you spend enough time in Thailand, and may as well understand them.”
I don’t know what choice phrases may be on offer, but some sensible advice is: don’t try and use any of them if you don’t fully understand not just the literal meaning, but also the possible effect of using what may seem, to a Westerner, pretty mild language. Also, what may amuse, say, bar girls in Nana [Portman – I’m not implying that you may hang out in Nana], will generally go down like a lead balloon with most other people, and can very rapidly escalate a minor misunderstanding into something very nasty.
On a lighter note, I once had a great little phrasebook that advised:
“Ooi” (р╕нр╕╕р╣Лр╕в) – ‘sound of surprise, as may be made by a girl struck by lighting’. Given local standards of construction, not beyond the realms of impossibility …
Perhaps I should add that Khun Da is well aware of the ‘option’ her former colleague (Boonyuen) took, but she decide to fight the case anyway. This is really brave. She has also (I was told by someone who’s following her case and visitting her regularly) ‘come to terms’ with the prospect that, not only her case could drag on for years, when the conviction comes, it would, in all probability, not be in her favour. Of couse, the fact that both Khun Boonyuen, an ordinary woman without famous name or influencial friends, and Khun Suwicha who has a young family to take care of, took the ‘option’, is completely understandable. All these cases only show how cruel, degrading and babaric this law and the context in which it is enforced are.

The survival of Najib and UMNO
All true and to the point. Just one note about Rafidah Aziz, talking from personal experience, she is probably one of the best ministers that the cabinet had. Very effective in handling her job and created a very effective ministry. So she really was an asset to the country and Dr M was right in the choice.
Buddhism and postmodern imaginings
He clearly had little respect for it since…
Suwicha Thakor still locked up
I agree, we should not let this thing die down, in fact, we should make it as loud as possible. Suvicha is not alone, his children and his parents have to count on him. By jailing Suvicha, they are slowly killing his whole family. If you look deeply into all these cases, you will find how cruelly these families were punished. I only hope that New Mandala would not stop digging and print us with these kind of articles.
Reconciliation in Thailand?

Battle at Dindaeng, Bangkok, 13 April 2009
Review of Thai language phrasebooks

Thanks Khun Nich.
