Jon, I was in a coma at my monastary for many years and now can talk to you from cyber space so there is hope with your friend.
David W, I am willing to engage on scientific questions and even Richard Dawkins if he is reading this blog.
david w, consider what the hippocampus is physically and then consider what neuroscientists believe it to do.
Jon, philosophical questions are only abstract if one is unable or unwilling to apply the dialectic. Maybe what you are talking about here is feudalism and liberal modernity rather than spiritual poverty. Goodluck with your friends wife.
Louis – Hongsawadee (in Burmese, it’s Hanthawadi/Hanthawaddy) was the capital of the Mon kingdom and is now in present-day Pegu (Bago). The Burmans conquered the Hanthawadi Kingdom in the 1500s and ruled it until being defeated by the British. I believe Burma’s referred to as Hongsawadee in the same way that the Burmese call Thailand “Yodaya”, which comes from the city name of Ayutthaya.
“I wait with baited breath for a northeastern forest meditation master who asserts that the claims and arguments of neuroscience have caused him to critically rethink classical Buddhist claims about perception, awareness, consciousness and meditative states.”
Well, from my perspective the relevance of science in everyday life is more important than abstract philosophical questions.
Like if poorer people can live and not die because of a more scientific way of thinking among doctors, nurses, and the general population.
Like this weekend the wife of a friend who is only 37 years old slipped into a coma and looks to die shortly, after several hospitals, over 50,000 baht in expenses, and……this is the really incomprehensible thing….NO DIAGNOSIS…this boggles my mind….it also boggles my mind that so many of my fellow countrymen think that the abstract value of big pharma’s intellectual property and patents is somehow in some abstract sense worth more than the lives of the people who would otherwise die if not allowed access to these drugs on some abstract legal principle, I think they just view Thailand as some monolithic one-minded actor when in actuality there are people who are dieing every minute for want of a few hundred baht and for want of a more scientific attitude towards disease and their own health
Part of that is the way that people treat their own health, how doctors treat it, how the nurses treat it.
Doesn’t it make the Thais sick to see tyranny flourish for so long and in total disrespect of world opinion right at their neighbor Burma?
ASEAN should stop patronizing the Burmese generals and give these army thugs the ASEAN snub . . . remove Burma from ASEAN membership unless Aung San Suu Kyi is released and the Burmese junta give a clear cut schedule of a new election.
Yes I do view General Sonthi as good-intentioned coup leader surrounded by bunglers, not all good-intentioned mind you. And I agree with you that the junta is failing miserably at their proclaimed task of restoring stability, peace and unity to the Kingdom. The junta’s hand in the May30th political parties dissolution controversy is imbecilic . . nearly as imbecilic as that suicidal taxi drver who rammed his cab to a tank.
To your question Taxi Driver “why accept the bungling generals?”. I did say I view General Sonti as good intentioned didn’t I? And I don’t have to replace them at all . . . these generals have expiration dates self-tagged on them which is sometime the end of Y2007 I believe.
All we can do is wait and watch the comedy of errors by these bungling generals, while Tosakan tremble in terror.
In the future, please read a post before you comment on it. The article is talking about the black-market, that is, illegally produced copies…not licensed copies sold by a established retailer. No one is saying you can’t buy a real DVD of King Naresuan; however it is hard to find a cheap, pirated copy.
Growing up as your granddaughter, you were an inspiration to me. Your strength and courage inspire me today to be a better person with everyone. you will be missed but never forgotten. Your legacy and history will live on and I will share all the stories with my kids.
love you always
Parisjat
Jeru it sounds like you view these generals as a bunch of good-intentioned imbeciles who are trying their best – but failing – for the country, and that they have everyone’s interest, including yours & mine & the other 70 million people, at heart.
I on the other hand think these generals are imbeciles who are trying their best for themselves, their power structures and their friends, and will only do their best for your & my interests as long as it does not conflict with theirs.
Even if you are right, Jeru, why accept imbeciles? And what avenue do you have to replace them?
I certainly don’t doubt that the conference will be used for the glorification of establishment Thai Buddhism and the Chakri dynasty. Should we guess in advance how many times Mongkut’s “experiments” with astronomy, practical technology and whatnot will be valorized as a sign of royalist-led investigations into the compatability between Buddhism and science? Dozens and dozens of times by Thai scholars, no doubt. (Of course, few will comment on the stunning almost complete silence of subsequent generations of Thai monarchs and monks in engaging with modern science.)
I suspect though that this will be a “supplemental” effect rather than a “hidden agenda”. More information about when the conference was planned and by whom though might provide clues as to the motivations of the organizers. The fact is, these sorts of conferences are almost ritualized in their global appeareance and dynamics – much commentary on how science should learn from the teachings, practices or methods of Buddhism, but little if any comments about how Buddhism could learn or be rethought in light of modern science. I suspect little of anything new will be offered up when compared with the volumes and volumes of previous (rather simplistic) reflections. I wait with baited breath for a northeastern forest meditation master who asserts that the claims and arguments of neuroscience have caused him to critically rethink classical Buddhist claims about perception, awareness, consciousness and meditative states. When that happens, then we will know that true, critical dialogue has begun between science and Buddhism.
Thai Chat: “In Thailand it’s not question of fascism: it’s just a big mess !”
Chaos or a mess, or a diversion that blocks something else more sinister going on behind the curtain?
Isn’t this mess just a big diversion that allows powerful people to bully, lie, cheat, kill, and get away with it? While much of the general public just covers eyes and ears and pretends it isn’t happening, or the media does it for them, or makes some complicated explanation about Thai culture, that you have to accept, or you’ll bad.
It really shook my faith in Buddhism when during the Thaksin era you’d open up the newspaper and see a pile of dead bodies at Tak Bai or a monk being a cheer leader for the drug war, kill, kill, kill, while thinking investigative journalists used their enlightened brains and revealed that people with power were using the death lists for a bloody-litte-democratic public opinion-boosting extra-judicial killing-show to pander to popular “democratic” sentiments, reminiscent of Mussolini’s black shirts. Thank goodness Thailand now has Yellow Shirts, but the elderly university administrators who lied, cheated, and stole money from me are still there, living their lies, as are many others like them, I would say.
How can a professor of law and a vice president of a university get charged for running a child prostitution ring by the police, reported in Matichon, and yet have everyone at the “university” accept this, remain silent, not even talk or discuss it, blithely re-elect the president who obviously failed in oversight, in a rigged election? I’ll tell you why, because everyone believes this president (highest unelected bureaucrat possible, he tells you at every self-congratlulating meeting) to have absolute power. The Thai ajaans whisper among themselves that he “sleeps in the palace” whatever that means. That he can “crush you with one finger” whatever that means. Meanwhile, on every occasion he is having Royalty presiding at ceremonies, so people believe he is really powerful, so they ask no questions and blindly accept everything this crook force feeds them. A university?
As far as I can see the whole thing relies on an information gap (or information blocking). The people below the president won’t say anything because they are afraid of his power, that he could destroy their life, so they say nothing, so at the other end , on the Royalty side, they don’t know what this guy is doing, how much of a crook he is being, and all the bad things that he is responsible for, so because the info never gets out, he is never held accountable. And the whole university autonomy thing, information autonomy, the university that this guy rules over is the best example of why university autonomy is a bad idea, with this absolute autonomy a university can become a little Conradian heart of darkness, a controlled little information feof with one man at the top controlling all information. A Foucault’s little panopticon incarnate. Skrimp on teachers’ salaries but build a 60 million baht spa behind the uni (one teacher I talked to recently didn’t even know it exists!) and a planned golf course. Yes, what are universities for, after all.
Those brown shirted (or is it yellow shirted) army thugs still chasing you Tosakan in your nightmares?
What you see Tosakan is an excellent example of bungling junta generals shooting themselves with their silly tactics that neither impress, initimidate much less terrorize.
Has the junta declared a Thai Master Race yet? Have they pointed at an outsider enemy other than Thaksin? And if Thaksin who is supposed to be the junta’s public enemy no. 1 had still NOT been shot, much less jailed, or fined, how can you Tosakan be so terrorized by these generals who cannot even shoot straight?
Science, as well as religions, belong to mankind, and the world didn’t begin from a manmade schema of ‘the modern age’ There, 16th Century onwards, we began our process of compartmentalizing and truncating our knowledge.
Does anybody follow the development of Continental Philosophy, (esp. in France)? What goes on in Continental philosophy will generally provide an epistemoglocial shift to ‘other disciplines’ (discipline– another useless term) in a following decade or so. Wait for at least ten years (or even sooner), you’ll begin to sense the impact of the ‘next turn’ in human sciences.
As for the real objective of this conference, I don’t know. But the fact that the organisers don’t need any registration fee from participants/attendants is kinda saying they already have ‘sufficient sponsorship’.

“In Thailand we respect the king. Nobody dares to make a copy.”
It is? That it was spread over 3 VCD’s and not a DVD led me to believe that it was a camcorder job! I suppose US$13 is a bit much for a pirated copy.

How about these? Even though they are for US$20 the packaging is clearly shifty.

‘Buddhism and Science’ conference at Mahidol
Thailand after the coup: Event at SOAS
Well, SOAS has clarified that Thaksin has been given an invitation to speak but didn’t reply.
Considering that he avoided being questioned by an assembly populated with his own party members, this evasive behaviour is not entirely surprising.

Living a lie, I’d say.

‘Buddhism and Science’ conference at Mahidol
