I think everyone there knows what Mahathir has done and what sort of legacy he leaves behind. Everyone is aware he has a son in politics, most politicians do.
His presence there cannot be controlled as he is a free member of the public like everyone else. The crowd can then hardly be expected to pretend they don’t know him.
No, Mr Smith, people do not have to make compromises or Faustian bargains. Mahathir is evil and one does not compromise with evil. You do not know Mahathir (I do) and your cynical reasoning is exactly why Malaysia is in the fix its in. NO compromises with ethics and liberty, ever. Malaysians do not yet understand this.
Corruption is corruption, wether Najib is a “dedicated” PM or not. That US$700 million is for Malaysia’s economy but instead, the money is in Najib’s personal accounts ! Why is the $700 million in Najib’s accounts and not with the Malaysian government ? That proves that Najib is a con artist and a scammer.
At the Bersih 4 rally in KL I saw one professional drone pilot operating his drone, but I have to admit feeling uncomfortable with the sometimes low flying drones in such a packed environment.
Regarding social media, it was actually quite hard to stay in contact, as 3G was largely down or very slow. I sent most of my tweets with a time delay or tried to get onto wifi wherever possible. But Whatsapp and other internet messaging services often did not work, which meant people had to call or text to stay in real-time contact – or just bump into each other randomly…
Your article is subjective biased n full of inaccuracies. Its not about freedom of speech, its about character assassination, which I believe, is a crime in most countries. There is an organised gang whose main objective is to slander, concoct false stories with a view to mislead the gullible masses. I have lived in this country for over half a century n i know that these devious means will not work. The Thai monarchy has done more for the masses than all the politicians put together.
You mean Kotor 4.0. The mere presence of Mahathir has tarnished this display of Malaysian immaturity. That many yellow shirts greeted Dr M like a saint is the most revolting and repugnant thing I have seen in years. The same man who spewed racist anti-Chinese verbiage know wants Indians and Chinese to vote for Mukhriz, his son, for PM.
This is transparently obvious, and that Malaysians are so easily duped, confirms they are not ready for democracy and their Constitution.
Those that welcomed Dr M, the ex-dictator, that laid the foundations for why there even needs to be a Bersih 4.0, should hang their heads in shame at their venality, stupidity and cupidity. Apparently, Malaysia can’t do better. “Malaysia tidak boleh”. This rally was a pathetic reminder that Malaysians do not know what they want.
The police actually arrested some people wearing “bersih 4” yellow T-shirts in smaller towns, like Melaka. They were released quite quickly.
I am just waiting for the Bar Council legal aid group to sue the police for wrongful detention (arrest) because the so call ban is not legal – The ban was enacted under the “publication act” A t-shirt is not a publication.
Of course nimwits ministers can’t tell the difference. I just wonder at the quality of their legal counsel!
Hi Roy,
well not in KL, that’s for sure. The fact that so many people ignored the government and police rhetoric in this respect is telling. From what I am hearing authorities are starting to crack down in smaller rallies across the peninsula and in East Malaysia, where smaller numbers make policing easier.
This ‘article’ is the worst ideologically-driven piece of trash I’ve ever seen NM publish. It contains virtually no new analytical content. It is egotistical to the point of utter, switch-off boredom for any sane reader – note how many times the author big-notes himself using the grammatical First Person. The REAL ANALYTICAL POINT is that in this ‘Bike for Mum’ Thailand’s Crown Prince appears extremely fit, healthy and able – contrary to descades of succesion motivated slander.
From my experience in Indonesia, the use of paramilitary organization or mass organizations is accepted part of Indonesian political life. The difference is almost all political parties have a paramilitary wing to act as muscle. Some of these organization have criminal elements.
On the surface race and religion. Red herring big as a whale, of great value to the ruling elites. Deep down money makes the world go round. Laughing all the way to the bank.
To the Burmese public the line has blurred between Tayoke and Kalar in recent decades. Today’s laobans and yester year’s chettiars both lording over you and ripping you off taking your land. From the sepoys to the Kokang even if they are indigenous.
Who’s worse for the environment? Who propped up military rule in Burma? You hear it from me first, no?
What did the murder of 6 million Jews do for Germany ? The murder of 2 million Sudanese and south Sudanese do for Sudan ? Did the genocide of 1.5 million Armenians help Turkey ? What do you honestly think the Per-Capita GNP of Malaysia would be if the Chinese all left tomorrow ? But, no fear, Mahathir has ingratiated himself with the same people (Kotor 4.0)he attacked when he was in office, nothing like a Malaysian playbook: All sides lose and all sides smell
like rotting durian.

Both Bersih and the UDD in Thailand are similar in makeup. I just hope you have the leadership that will not fold at the earliest opportunity.

Thanks for the article and photos.
I just wonder if all wearing Bersih T shirts will be prosecuted by an even more corrupt state.
