It’s as if Thailand and its education system were run by a kind of extremist Muslim Taliban-like sect with all students compulsarily focused on memorizing the Quran and other religious texts instead of studying science, math, engineering, fact/research-based history, political science, sociology, philosophy, critical thinking, questioning, empirical method, etc.

  3. tom says:

what is called education in Thailand is a sham.
The Thai education system is a crime against humanity.
It is simply part of the Propaganda system in the country.

  4. Hang Tuah says:

NO, and Malaysia never will be, as long as sane and moderate Malaysians ensure their Constitution remains secular.

  5. Dee says:

Just a quick question Mr. Allyn:
Are you writing this piece to help Mr. Subianto’s candidacy or to save what is left of your reputation?

I hardly think you are helping the first cause seeing how any sign of foreign involvement will only bring negative sentiments in Indonesia. Which was the reason Mr. Zon vehemently denied your existence in Mr. Subianto’s team in the first place.
So I must conclude that your reason is the later. Aborting the sinking ship already?

The Perils of Loyalty clearly states Hercules is imprisoned. It’s in the opening sentence. Or you didn’t get that far? It also doesn’t suggest he personally ‘rigs’ anything, but that his nation wide organisational networks and finances have been mobilized over the past two years, backed by Gerindra, to secure support for Prabowo through fostering patronage relationships. Too subtle for you to grasp? Your own supposed ‘insights’ are straight out of back pages of Lampu Merah.

  8. Nian says:

The worst is yet to come. Indoctrination or education? Only absolute military!

  9. Angrymagpie says:

I wonder how much of this new spin – discrediting quick count in its entirety – is a conscious strategy from Prabowo’s team, now that their own pollsters’ credibility has been severely challenged (and are falling one by one)

Sceptic : geo-economic realities change. How can any serious student of this region dismiss as “fantasy” the idea that the current “Thai structure” will not – at some point, perhaps soomer than later – collapse ? There have been so many different politico-socio-economic entities – and shifting boundaries – in this part of the world, over so many millenia, what’s to say we are NOT on the cusp of another ? Is the widespread believe in that ancient Buddhist prophesy – i.e. that the Chakri Dynasty would have Nine Reigns, and the last a great one – mere “fantasy” ? Quite apart from your narrow focus on economics – and from within a rigidly liberal perspective it seems – there is the environmental question : Bangkok is simply sinking under rising sea levels, with ever-worsening floods, no matter how much Japanese style “concrete construction economics” is poured into delaying this. Eventually a new administrative capital will have to be found. And the most viable available is Korat – Nakhon Ratchasima. I.e. in Isaarn. No “fantasy” about that !

I am proud to have met and worked with this courageous young man. The fact that a Thai soldier has threatened to assassinate Netiwit on his return to Thailand only goes to underline his importance.

‘The fact that we can even speculate…’

No. Mr Aspinall, YOU are the one speculating then conflating your opinion with the Royal WE.

The use of WE gives the impression you are delivering a report to a small gathering of fellow conspirators. Not good.

But hey, I did enjoy your ‘To be fair, however,’ which I take to be evidence of a sense of humour previously absent in your posts.

    Naughty corner.

  14. Christine S. Tjhin says:

    Mr. Rob Allyn,

    Your self-righteous article is appalling.

Are you lying or was Fadli Zon, Vice Chairman of Gerindra, the party who supposedly hired you as consultant?

He blatantly denied your involvement in the campaign. The news article is in Bahasa Indonesia, but I’m sure your fee covers translators.

    http://www.rmol.co/read/2014/03/29/149115/Fadli-Zon-Bantah-Gerindra-Gunakan-Konsultan-Asing-untuk-Prabowo-

I’m expecting another spin about this from both you and Fadli Zon, and whichever spindoctors hired for Prabowo’s camp, or perhaps Prabowo himself.

    Shame on you.
    Shame on Fadli Zon.

  15. Irwan P says:

No wonder why Prabowo hard-heartedly denies and attacks these “quick counts produced by private pollsters on Jokowi’s campaign team” as you call it. Now Indonesians are anxious anticipating the official count announced by KPU on July 22.

Mr. Allyn, you’ve managed to provoke Prabowo, his supportes and risk the lives of over 200 million people. There’s still a chance you can fix this. Please tell Prabowo the truth and help these people

  16. Scott Latham says:

A splendidly forthright indictment of a system crippled at its very core by incompetence, hypocrisy and bafflingly myopic priorities. Good call, Mr Netiwit, and much credit to you for being brave enough to risk ruffling many feathers!

  17. danau says:

correction: they say that Allyn posted this from *Indonesia*…

  18. danau says:

I share Angrymagpie’s concerns. (Hence my multiple posts!) Merdeka is also citing ANU’s website for publishing Allyn’s post. Thankfully Merdeka has taken the time to ask for comments from Made Supriatma, who has offered some critique. But Merdeka has wrongly attributed the italicize two line introduction to Allyn (but did not mention the purpose of the publication – for public response). And they say that Allyn posted this from the US, when he clearly states that he has gone back to the US. Luckily, they have only made minor misinterpretations…for now.

Betul sekali, sangat besar kemungkinan Parbowo akan menggunakan kekuasaan pejabat korup utk memanipulasi suara pilpres. Karena mereka juga takut Jokowi menang

  20. Angrymagpie says:

He’s confusing his audience here. He thought he’d be speaking to the general public, not a group of trained nitpickers.
The danger is now that the article has been circulated by mass media in Indonesia, he might actually be speaking to his audience indirectly. As the article & the overwhelmingly critical comments it attracts so far are in English, the Indonesian general public without the necessary language skill would need to rely on how the mass media & social media interpret them (article & comments). As I’ve pointed out in another comment, Kompas is already running an article on this. And it did not mention any of the critical comments it’s received so far. This, i am afraid, helps make this article a somewhat effective response – even though it doesn’t stand a chance against the learned audience.
