This is Thailand: To me it appears most likely that these new slice & dice degrees are not recognized here just as some others kinds are not – simply because the Thai-speaking world i.e. Thailand doesn’t offer them. I have the same problem, so they would seem to have been ‘translated’ into local parlance for local consumption. But it’s not as though people believe politicians anyway.
Grenade attacks are a separate issue.Akanat is however correct that the discussion on his botched CV is absurd, though there is probably more bemusement than malice involved.Any reasonable person with a nodding acquaintance with the Oxbridge degree process and not consumed with class resentment(the Spoonerish “the voice below”) would have immediately understood how the confusion arose.Plenty to criticise Khun Akanat for,but not this silly degree diversion – though the initial harmless teasing perfectly in order.
Akanat responds – what’s really pathetic is that in the very first paragraph he attempts to link this article to grenade attacks.
“Saturday evening PDRC spokesperson Akanat Promphan was targeted on several fronts. First, his family residence was assaulted by what were most likely grenades launched from M-79s (the second attack in a week). In addition, the former MP’s credentials came under fire, with several sources including New Mandala and others sensationalizing a clerical error in a parliamentary-produced backgrounder on his education in an attempt to discredit him.”
Being a Thai, I can’t help being reminded of Chadchart Sittipunt when I read about Jokowi from several international media outlets during the past few years.
Someone well versed in both Thai and Indonesian politics please make some analysis about similarities and differences of popularties of Jokowi and Chadchart.
I mean who would back those seeking democracy against those seeking royalist authoritarianism?
Only terrible, not “good” people would do that.
(Did you know that Nelson Mandela came from an aristocratic African family? How very dare he stand up and help other people! Did you also know that Thaksin holds 2% of the wealth of the top 10 persons in Thailand? He’s relative small fry in comparison to the real oligarchs).
Thanks for this, Bunyanuch. The problem, of course, is that Akanat was away at school in Australia and the UK for much of his life, rather than in Thailand–let alone in the Thai provinces. His high-flown rhetoric about fighting for the country notwithstanding, his understanding of that country must remain in question.
Yes, two-day work week Megawati, much like the father, long on rhetorical flourishes, and very short on micromanagement and policy implementation, something that Joko Widodo, or if you prefer Jokowi (aptly named), shows very clear signs of himself.
NO, they rarely do, which has nothing to do with Islam. Since, a decrease in the percentage votes for the Islamic Parties, has been accompanied by an increase in the number of Indonesians that want Shari’a Law. Indonesians, by and large (except for NGOs and liberal-minded affluent Indonesians), did not pay attention to Gus Dur’s frequent lectures on Islamic tolerance.
The only things that this article highlights are that Derek Milburn is quick to jump to sweeping conclusions based on the flimsiest of evidence, and that the readership of new mandala is in general intellectually and morally bereft of anything worthwhile to say on the political situation in Thailand.
And that Derek finally got a chance to let everyone unnecessarily know he has an degree from Oxford.
A sad sad indictment on the how the mentality on this website has degenerated; you may as well be yellow shirts.
I think I may well see if I can get a article published here, its not exactly a high bar, even as a non-oxbridge degree holder.
I guess you will have to stay put. To migrate, you would need to get at least one foreign language up to speed. It does not look like English is your strong language.
Anyway, limited job opportunities for non bumis only refer to Govt and GLCs employment. The private sector offers lots of jobs for qualified or hard working people.
BTW, if your are educated in Chinese, there are also loads of job opportunities in China.
I don’t know about Oxford, but certainly Cambridge – from where my father graduated – used to, and perhaps still does, simply automatically awarded a Masters Degree to any graduate, two years after they graduate with their bachelors. You did n’t have to have actually done anything for the Masters, except be a graduate of two years standing.
Do you mean that, as Mark Twain put it, “It is better to be silent and be taken for a fool than to open one’s mouth and remove all possible doubt” ?
Yes, it is, which is why this ponderous discussion about Oxford degrees, when the National University of Singapore went from not even being on the list, 20 years ago, to # 22 in the World today, makes Oxford graduates appear a bit anachronistic, whether they are British or Thai.
A few thousand years is not in the dictionary anymore. We are now counting the duration of a good, stable, enjoyable, full of laughter (not so much drugged hyena-ing ) society only in seconds. Ask the Greeks. Go see how the Latin Americans are enjoying their “West” inspired and established “progress”.
Funny Shwe Mi thought exactly the same once she was in Bangkok or so she remembers although memory is rather dim nowadays in the grim realty of Thaketa AIDS hospital just off the bridge.
As the Cycle of Idiocy would have it, everywhere, people do not learn at all. Yet think they do know everything, delicious, making predator-ing boringly so easy.
Starting from Detroit and spreading around like a sewage over-spill, this glitz and glamour circus reducing everything in its wake to rusty, rotten debris have been unstoppable. Most important loss is the societal degradation and what every one realizes but still loath to discard “me,me,me” society. South America is so destroyed. Please say YOU or some other clown with DDSSCC or PPHHDD’s or whatever can regrow the Amazon or something funny.
In old days -ie. two decades ago, people can grow a house full of children and fill with laughter with Dad working alone. Now with all these PROGRESS, how come all these equal opportunities crowd is sleeping on the street with all working and not much to eat? Go to Sule Road tonight. And please say that word “good” with some conviction to yourself.
Is it really a great opportunity to sell out the rivers and poison the land and level the forest which NO ONE can un-do and buy some trips to Disney Land. Is this really, really progress?
Even the loss of land and river is still alright. Most hurtful thing to lose is the “contentment” of the caring society which is till there in Burma. Already there are full of reports about unprecedented violet crimes, husband strangling wife, child being raped and killed, siucides, wife hkilling the husband with a hammer, children being kidnapped and sold for shark-bait, Yaba/ heroin/ ephedrine all aplenty in Latpadaung of Daw Daw Suu’s blessing and all the metropolitan areas in unprecedented way, people hiring security firms which did not exits in Burma before.
Really? All good?
Greed and short-sighted-ness do have a soothing effect.
He might misunderstanding that there is an impossible to obtain 1 bachelor with 3 master degree at the same time..It is a package of honors courses for PhD candidates.
So this means he just graduated only bachelor degree with honor courses
(Ps Honors, most of Thai people understands that it means getting a highest scores, points or GPA ). That’s why he use the word ‘honor’ to build his credibility)

You will find that his share will be much higher once you include the wealth held by his drivers and maids.
Why is Malaysia experiencing a brain drain?
I am a bit of a cynic. An Asiatic economic migrant to an English speaking country with poor English language skills? I think not.

Su’s English is alright to get by Neptunian.
I doubt the people that built (& continue to build) Australia or the United States have really good English.
I think the most important trait is the ability to work hard and persevere. It does help too, if one is talented and willing to take risks.

Yes, it’s appalling to take sides. Real disgrace.

Jokowi is governor of Jakarta not one of it’s mayors, of which there are five.
