It is almost a year since the war between the Kachin Independence Army and the Myanmar government re-ignited. In that time New Mandala has kept up a steady stream of related analysis and commentary (such as these posts on media, combat deaths, prisoners, operations, and the regional context).
As the first anniversary of these renewed Kachin hostilities looms it is time to re-assess exactly what has happened in the struggle for peaceful, participatory political processes in ethnic minority areas. In some places I think the trends are pretty good. In others they are nearly as bad as they have ever been.
What explains this prevailing contradiction? Might the first anniversary of the new Kachin war provide impetus for positive change?
“In some places I think the trends are pretty good. In others they are nearly as bad as they have ever been.”
Generous assessment.
A year today.
No end in sight for Kachin. Not nearly as bad. Worse than ever on all acconts. Than Shwe would let any thing Thein Sein and Aung Min want to give away so long as there is no equal status for Kachin ( no federalism) and the pipes, rails, etc, Thant Myint- U is so delighted about keeps going on for the Chinese who treat the land as their own. Peope displaced, killed and tortured are so common place, people learned of them themselves got inured and inhuman.
Karen, at least KNU is not heeding the warning by he Kachin Environment network as there is a lage cut from large largesse from prospective loot is on offer.
Norwegian involvement is not necessarily a wonderful news either. http://www.tamilnet.com/art.html?catid=79&artid=35252
What the international communities are celebrating is definately not the triumph of the Burmese public but the consolidation of the power of the military who are now firmly on their side along with their cheerleader, Aung San Suu Kyi.
Current gradual awakening of Burmese in spite of various distraction will spell the end of this injustice in Kachinland. Definately not the deadline of UNFC where majority of leaders are proving Dr Zarni’s prediction, people will not be able to resist 500 billions in store for Burma. In store for whom? And how come? Most importantly do the Burmese public want it?

Violating the very Sun Tzu’s principle of “wining the war b/f even beginning a battle” the Kachin-Bamar conflict will drag on with all the usual accompanying tragedies with, the Kachin surely getting the even shorter end.
How will this conflict will be concluded?
Look no further than preponderance of recent examples b/t Karen-Bamar and similar others.
The good news is this conclusion will be swifter than other previous ones.
Due to neither 3rd party nor Guns and Ammo ┬о individual zealots involvement yet, as in the case of still ongoing Karen-Bamar.

Hi Plan B,
You’er out of topic! You better write your comment based on reliable sources, not New Light of Myanmar, not your dreams. You’re like a cave men coming out from the cave with naked and blaming everyone.
Explain the world that your words “Kachin surely getting the even shorter end”. How?
Don’t you know that KIA is a lot more stronger than when it was established in 40 years ago.

Your pride in a strong KIA belies the ugly truth that ‘War is hell’ especially those Citizenry near the fronts be it Bamar , Kachin or other Citizenry minorities not yet ID.
Not a bad idea living naked in a cave and coming out cursing at everyone and any process that will undermine “The well being of ALL Myanmar Citizenry”
WA as an exception to the rule for now, no opposing side to Bamar has ever come out even let alone ahead.
