    Mr Daud
I’m really interested to get details of Malay Cocos society from you since I’m doing my PhD research on the identity formation of Malay Cocos Society. Perhaps we can have a further discussion on this matter. How can I contact you Mr Daud?

  3. support renegades says:

You call yourself ‘scholars’, really? Sound more like headless chooks, running around trying to peck at bits of ‘credit’ and ‘acknowledgment’ you guys need to validate your existence.
He wrote a brave book, you didnt. End of story. Get on with your lives.

  4. support renegades says:

    HE wrote the book.
    YOU didnt.

    Get over it!

  5. Ko Htay says:

    Plan B,

The piper has delivered his service upon invitation and children are now with him. It’s time for the king to keep his promise and pay the bill.

You have no message for the king because you are not one among the parents.

  6. Charlotte Galloway says:

I saw a cockfight on the roadside outside Pyay earlier this year. Just a small group of very focused men, near a group of houses. I didn’t hang around as I really didn’t want to watch – as you say, nothing much is written about this practice in Myanmar

  7. Nanchanok Wongsamuth says:

Signed just now. I hope it’s in time for today’s submission!

  8. James Giggacher says:

Thanks for the clarification Peter. The review has been updated to reflect that fact.

    All the best,
    James

  9. Peter Jackson says:

Just one correction to Brian Curtin’s book review, The Queer Asia monograph series is published by Hong Kong University Press, not Columbia University Press. Columbia University is simply the North American sales agent for all HKUP books.

  10. Robert Dayley says:

Thank you everybody for your signatures. Please send more.

  11. Peter Cohen says:

To unquote Clifford Geertz, cockfighting is about making money to buy cigarettes and other stimulants.

  12. Beans says:

I’d just like to thank both these men for trying to enlighten the world and Thailand on the Thai story. These days the more media on finding the real story in Thailand the better. Future generations seeking the true Thai story will thank all contributors equally.

  13. Peter Cohen says:

    Right Moe,

China and Bangladesh don’t represent any existential threat to Myanmar and when ISIS eventually reaches Yangon, and bombs go off, you will dissemble again, won’t you ? I know you have been paying close attention, as well, to inconspicuous, but active, Iranian movements in all ASEAN member nations.

  14. Nyunt Shwe says:

    Plan B,

“Buddha above King model” could not be applied to our problem since Myanmar has more population of Christian and Muslim. In Thailand, 96% are Buddhist whilst 89% or less in Myanmar.

The best way I could imagine at present is to educate our people about Democracy, its value, principles, and responsibilities.

  15. Samuel Johnson says:

Please permit the Thai people the liberties they have enjoyed historically and are common-place of the free-world.

  16. planB says:

    Ko Htay

The burdens are on NLD shoulders. The citizenry has spoken.

    1) Need to win over the military without seemingly capitulating DASSK’s ‘Freedom From Fear”.

    2) Appropriately prioritize which FFF elements can be implemented that will benefit the most that will also win over military trust. “Common Causes” are plenty.

No need for Mr Selth to further educate the military.

The ball is squarely in the victor court.

SPDC and present establishment had proven that it is very aware of every aspect of not just surviving but coming out ahead always at the expense of the citizenry.

  17. Marie Hoy says:

    please sign everyone

  18. planB says:

Apology to Mr Andrew Seth for the mistaken attribution.

Thank you for the indicated erratum Ko Moe Aung.

    Simply put:

    1) If DASSK even at conclusive victory do not repeat the mistakes of previous ’88 lesser victory.

Even within the constraints highlighted by Mr Selth her victory can easily accommodate the military/the guns with the help of other democracy.

This will be a unique way to “freedom from fear” that she espouse so dearly that every body can agree with. One step at a time, not gingerly but with dignity.

    2) “Common causes/destiny” i.e. For peace and prosperity to the Myanmar Citizenry as the mantra in every actions she will take legislatively.

As Thailand goes, the “Buddha above King” has been a successful model to unite Thai.

For Myanmar similar model of “Buddha above —- &—-” model to unite is viable and will even be better.

I hope this make some things clearer.

  19. Chris Beale says:

I would like to see what General Prayut does if Kevin Hewison returns to Thailand. It is Prayut who has CLEARLY committed Lese Majeste, intimidating this ailing King, into supporting Prayut’s illegal coup.

  20. Ian Bone says:

Another clarification to Kevin’s clarification – AMM never “fled” Thailand as he wasn’t living there when his book came out, nor when he started writing about the wikileaks cables.

As Kevin very well knows AMM was living in Singapore and had been for quite some time prior to the moment he left Reuters.

There’s also a heap of difference from Pavin & Ji fleeing and AMM deciding not to travel back to a country he hadn’t lived in for 12years prior to the release of his book. Pavin & Ji lost entire networks, careers and left behind a huge amount of family ties etc.

We really need to stop all this silly posturing and pseudo myth-making about “heroic” journalists and academics. The people who are really doing the fight/struggle for Thai democracy are the ordinary folk who don’t have the option for a position at a university in Japan or have an EU or Western passport they can suddenly use to escape. I’m not knocking anyone here or the academics or journalists involved in getting out some difficult information – just trying to bring in some perspective.
