Wow, I always like it when neo-colonists or anglophiles get riled up about the Chinese “invasion”
let’s do a comparision
1. The Brits, etc came to SEA. Planted a flag and declared the ownership of the land in the name of the queeen. With superior armaments, subdued or killed any locals not happy with the arrangements
– current neo-colonists full of praise for those actions
2. USA comes and declare certain parties violating this or that – supply arms as “aid” – you guys go ahead and kill each other
– meanwhile we sell you coc-cola and take mineral leases for a song. Thank you very much
The British came to exploit and extract, not to settle down unlike in South Africa, Australia or America for that matter. The Chinese cannot however behave like the European colonialists decimating the natives. In Burma they are at risk of being decimated themselves if they put a foot wrong in the eyes of the natives and their rulers alike (or used as a scapegoat or diversionary tactics in the latter’s case relying on the herd instinct of the former).
Assimilation of and intermarriage with the Chinese continue to remain much easier compared with the Indian peoples for obvious reasons. No amount of chest beating and hand wringing by Marayu or the ‘international community’ for that matter will change that.
Myanmar like every country has the exclusive right to classified the citizenry according to the constitution,
One may have the right to call/classify/claim/toID oneself as anything. However there are only classification and ID stated in the constitution. Kalar-Bamar and Tayoke-Bamar are just 2.
There are myriad of problem in Myanmar need to be dealt with accordingly. KAlar on the Boats mostly from Bangladesh is just one.
Do us all a favor Mr Sullivan, by promoting HR cause that benefit yourself and your organization.
The poverty induced HR require more thoughtful approach. Not inappropriate words that inflame those who are on the front of real problems in Myanmar.
You are right. Chinese are chopstick-colonising Burma and other countries in Southeast Asia. Next stop Australia?
There are at least 100 times more Chinese in Myan-Dian than Englishmen in Burma during the colonial period.
many were effected by the monsoon but not everyone is forced to live in camps, two of which are located close to the sea. the main reason why the are ‘deemed to be illegal’ is because of racist laws.
I believe this forum is open to people who want to learn about Malaysia, and is not just limited to so-called experts who treat others as if they are imbeciles for asking questions out of genuine curiosity. It’s very off-putting for others who would like to participate in a civil discussion.
Please use the term “genocide” a bit more careful! It is certainly not a term that should be used for whatever form of propaganda with political or economic or anyother purpose! Using it in the above conntext relativates real genocide like of the natives in the Americas, the European Jews in the Nazi-time etc.
Barring the 2Y strategy how is it any different from Coca-colonisation and US hegemony of this planet? We don’t have a Blofeld but we do have a Brzezinski.
“The sinicisation of the barbaric periphery is proceeding at an alarming pace!”
The facts that history as well as Nich has just presented the willingness to contribute to the society of the Chinese as opposed to he Muslim Kalar say it all.
#!
When do you see a Muslim Mosque opened to all like the Churches, Pagodas and Hindu Pali?
Guatemala’s congress, with a vote of 132 to 0, unanimously voted Tuesday to strip President Otto Pérez of his immunity from prosecution for his alleged role in a kickback scheme, clearing the path for his possible arrest just days ahead of a presidential election.
Now that’s instructive. If democracy could work in a country like Guatemala (whose per capita GDP is above the Philippines but below Thailand), why not Thailand?
Ex- Thai Prime Ministers Yingluck and Abhisit believe the Thai people should reject the proposed new Thai constitution as written because it does not foster national reconciliation and chokes the people’s democratic aspirations. Are you listening Gen Prayuth?
“The Rohingya have been driven from their homes, denied humanitarian aid, stranded at sea, buried in mass graves, and now flooded by monsoons. With the end of the monsoon season and the run up to the elections looming, the clock is already ticking on the next round of misery faced by this most persecuted people. The world can and must act.”
This last paragraph was a conclusive summation of D P Sulivan.
Mr Sullivan espouse an impressive tittle of directorship.
Normally, “crying wolf” will require one to live among the victims. How ever this article clearly show the laziness of the author academic attitude.
Let us take the whole Yakine state as example given, since the Kalar that Mr Sullivan alludede to.
The monsoon did not affect the Kakar alone the vast majority of the Yakhine citizenry are already poor, yet affected by the monsoon w/o the benefit of Mr Sullivan patronizing cry.
The Kalar in the camp are deemed to be illegal Bengali. Not ‘driven from their home” “denied humanitarian aid!” b/c of refusing MSF, a politic first organization that spent more on themselves than the so called the one cared for. Granted the Kalar prefer chance at sea to UNHCR camp, Is Mr Sullivan suggesting no exit camp as in Poland in WWII by the Nazi?
Doesn’t matter. Those brave indefatigable Thai policemen had already awarded themselves the ‘reward’ money for cracking the Erawan Shrine boming! I must wonder if they also tried to collect from Thaksin’s son Oak his reward offer of Baht 7.0 million.
The sinicisation of the barbaric periphery is proceeding at an alarming pace!
There are more Chinese immigrants than Rohingyas in Burma, but Ma Ba Tha is ok with that. Money talks, obviously. China is using the 2Y-strategy (Yuan and Y-chromosomes, which they have a surplus) together with the 2B-tactics (Bribery and Bullying) to invade pacify and sinicise the periphery. Tibet and Sinkiang are well-known examples. Burma, Laos, Cambodia, … next (Singapore and Thailand are already under Chinese influence anyway).
Peter Cohen – your comments become more ridiculous by the day. Now you think the Lao PDR is an annexed province of China. I was in the PDR recently, and I can assure you it is no such Chinese colony. There is plenty of Korean, Thai and even European (eg.French) investment, also some Japanese and even Australian (eg. in mining, notably gold). The PDR remains a close friend of it’ traditional ally, Vietnam. The PDR Politburo continues its long-standing skillful regional balancing act, while maintaining the widespread Lao hope that sooner than later they will peacefully re-unite with their Siamese brethren, their phi nong across the “Broken Heart”, I.e the Mekong.
Malaysia and Thailand both great models of working democracies their neighbours the Burmese can look forward to, at best India it seems. How disheartening when our generals are vigorously trying to follow Indonesia!
Anti-Semitism never seems to have caught on in Burma even though I remember being taught The Merchant of Venice instead of say Romeo and Juliet at school. Make it what you will but it was a Muslim teacher in a Catholic school. The Burmese being romantic in their inclinations still mostly know Romeo and Juliet more than Shylock especially after the Hollywood film with Olivia Hussey came out in the sixties.

As for Mahathir, how does he compare to military strongmen like Suharto. That is all have been asking. I have been to East Timor and Aceh during occupation and seen Suharto’s handiwork up close.
You are right, I don’t know much about Malaysia. But your are arguing with your emotions. The original Malaysian Constitution of 1957 allows for special provisions for Malays, why should one be surprised that people like Mahathir actually became Prime Minister.

Mr. Cohen, I don’t think that you should paint all Malaysians with the same brush. If you read this thread, there are Mahathir fans, detractors as well as pragmatists. http://www.freemalaysiatoday.com/category/highlight/2015/09/01/mahathir-at-bersih-4-was-it-repentance/

yes, this is true, but it is the current elite leaders in Thailand who are doing it.
