Singapore needs Anwar. Why don’t NUS offer him a seat there. Since so many there have praised his economic and political acumen or his inspirational leadership. Most definitely he’ll be able to consult the Singaporean government on how to have a free media or the opposition on how to create an effective alternate media without censorship. Don’t worry about how he stacks up to the Singaporean Goverment’s resources, he himself has plenty of backers like ConRad AdaNwar Stachtung and Freedom Foundation. I recon Singaporeans will find bliss in his presence

  2. Azfar says:

Dear friends from Southeast Asia and Australasia, perhaps had Anwar contested to be the leader in Indonesia or Singapore or even Australia or New Zealand, he could very well have won. As I see it the young will be able to carry on the oppositions’ aspirations for the next election. Hence I recon, no, I propose that Anwar Ibrahim, to be seconded to Indonesia or Singapore to lead the opposition there since they already have free elections, in order for them to have a more consequential election or change of national government

  3. L.P.SELVAM says:

DUDE, DAP HAS MORE PARLIMENT SEATS, SO THEY WILL DEMAND PM OR DEPUTY PM POST. THE ECONOMY IS HELD BY THE CHINESE. IF YOU GO TO ALL CHINESE BUSINESS CENTRE THEY DONT EMPLOY TAMILS, THEY EMPLOY ONLY BANGLAS, MYANMARS, NEPALESE AND OTHERS. THEY DONT EMPLOY THE TAMILS. LOOK IN PRU 14 – 2018. THE CHINESE TSUNAMI WILL BE 100% IF PAKATAN TAKES OVER PUTRAJAYA. HOW MUCH THE TAMILS ARE GOING TO BENEFIT. NOW WE HAVE BN CRONIES, LATER WE WILL HAVE PAKATAN CRONIES. THIS IS MALAYSIAN POLITICS. AT THE END OF THE DAY THE TAMILS WILL NOT BENEFIT.

(L.P. Selvam: Too many capital letters! That’s why so many of your comments won’t make it through to New Mandala. Best wishes to all, Editor: NSF)

  4. L.P.SELVAM says:

I STAND BY MY COMMENT THIS IS 100% CHINESE TSUNAMI. THE CHINESE USE THE TAMILS FOR THEIR BENEFIT AND LATER THEY WILL CHUCK THEM OFF. LOOK AT DAP IT IS TOTALLY A CHINESE CHAUNISTIC PARTY. THERE ARE ONLY A FEW TAMILS JUST TO HOOK VOTES.

  5. […] Equally panicky seems to be red shirt supporters claiming that a coup is in the offing. The clearest English-language statement of this was at New Mandala where Jim Taylor makes this […]

  6. JohnH says:

Have yet to read the book, although I see that the overview makes no mention of the role of the key influencers of either corruption and/ or US foreign policy over the years.

Off to the book store it is then.

  7. Chris Beale says:

“there are enormous splits within and among Thai security institutions” – that is THE KEY phrase. That, and ” the broadening of decentralization”. Looks like a must-read book.

    Hi Simon and Anya,
Yes I’m a New Mandala fan and reader too! Thanks for your Malaysia elections coverage.

I’ve made the election albums public. Please go to the links Simon posted earlier. I’ve also made some of my previous collections public for you too – if you are interested in the BERSIH rally paraphernalia, online flyers etc.

Please also check out this collection on FB

This is by Ezrena Marwan and Jac sm Kee from the Malaysia Design Archive http://www.malaysiadesignarchive.org

They are also trying to collect physical paraphernalia as well.

Very glad to hear the National Library of Australia is making a collection on the General Election! I’m impressed!

    cheers,

  9. Nick Nostitz says:

Then the UDD must have been sending some invisible core leaders to the protest today, because i have not seen a single one.

The Community Radio Station leaders accompanied by a bit more than 1000 protesters have delivered their petition, and delivered letters to the parliament and Government House, and decided to vacate their protest site and go home sometime tonight. They said they will wait and see what will happen with their petition before deciding what to do next.

Was that an anthropological storm in a teacup, Jim?

  10. J.K says:

you`re absolutely right, kuhenkv! Instead of pointing fingers we should reach out ourselves and not expect someone else to do it. We are all Malaysians, and if we really want peace we can`t be sitting around shoving blame. Plus, MalaysiaKini has an article about the rural poor and natives being threatened
    http://www.malaysiakini.com/news/228638

  11. J.K says:

Ouch. No need to drag race into this. I believe that`s what is called ‘race politics’ and somehow not very conducive to peace.
Brother, what is “Malaysian” to you then? Are the Chinese not Malaysians as well?

  12. J.K says:

BN had it`s own share of infighting. Najib was continuously showing up MCA`s Dr Soi Lek, not to mention the coup he pulled to topple Badawi, who was notorious for letting his son in law Khairy Jamaluddin have a free rein.
BN started working? Indeed. They were working hard in the lead up to the elections with phantom voters and “indelible” ink, not to mention double voting, vote disenfranchisement, and gerrymandering.
Change for change`s sake? I for one would prefer it immensely to the abuse of power on BN`s part.

  13. Fred Bouwman says:

When I read “Yingluck’s speech was written by her alone” I realized that Jim Taylor is completely biased.

The problem with the speech is the same problem with Thaksin, they cry about Democracy but then go ahead and try to dismantle the institutions designed to provide checks and balances. Yingluck was back in BKK a few days and then filed charges to muzzle a writer that expressed his opinion about her. Hmmm, what was she saying about Democracy?

The Red Shirts are angry at the Constitution Court for agreeing to review a challenge about the Constitutionality of amendments, that alone speaks volumes about the desire for checks and balances. The Court did not rule on the Constitutionality but just agreeing to review the protest (in other words, providing checks and balances) is enough for the protests to start.

  14. J.K says:

I wonder why it`s so hard for Pakatan to penetrate into Sarawak and Sabah. As a Sarawakian I`ve heard plenty of rumors to verify this article about natives being threatened http://www.malaysiakini.com/news/228638
but sadly it seems East Malaysia is yet to join in the tsunami.
Still, that comment–“We are all Malaysian now”–was beautiful. Thank you, Kean, for your work on the GE!

unfortunately, the actual headline of “Apa Lagi Cina Mau” (What more do the Chinese want) seems to have been only printed on the hard copy version of Utusan Malaysia and not online. But seeing as how The Star is also strongly under BN, I daresay their having reproduced the article headline is proof enough.

  17. J.K says:

Has everyone overlooked the issue of phantom voters and the irregularities of the electoral role? Bridget Welsh on MalaysiaKini did a good piece on the red flags in the election (http://www.malaysiakini.com/news/229367).
It`s not race dividing the country now. It`s just double voting, phantom voters, vote disenfranchisement, and “indelible” ink. And UMNO.

  18. Jim Taylor says:

UDD is not careless enough to declare its hand to media (even photojournalists who think they have all the answers!); there is too much at stake and strategies frequently compromised.

  19. J.K says:

i have to agree with neptunian. BN`s Mohd Ali Rustam (lost Melaka) and Abdul Ghani Othman (lost Gelang Patah) and Dr Mahathir himself all took to the media, even MalaysiaKini, to slam the Chinese as ‘ungrateful’, and ‘racist’. They even decried their own Malays as being ‘grasping’ and ‘greedy’.
Plus, one of the first comments recorded on Utusan Malaysia was a headline demanding Najib tighten media control.
If BN was really sincere about peace, if Najib was anywhere near sincere, the issue with the “indelible” ink would never have happened.
Peace? I sincerely wish so. The reality is a lot more troubling. BN is now truly a one-race party. Worst yet, UMNO has never shown more disregard for the people of Malaysia. Our only consolation is the knowledge they are now much more afraid of what the people can do.
I hope and pray that in the years up to the next election, Pakatan Rakyat can blitz into Sarawak and Sabah to ignite the same tsunami there that happened on the Peninsular.

  20. Gaysavan says:

    Bro, we all are Malaysians!!!
How Dare you call Chinese tsunami???
Its not race matter, please open your eyes…
in further, maybe in further Malay,Bangla,Myanmar,Indonesian then only Chinese and Indians… Because everyone disappointed about this election… 🙁 :'(
