Actually at 17:13 when Peter Jackson shows the head band, it said “р╣Др╕бр╣Ир╕Хр╣Йр╕нр╕Зр╕Ир╣Ир╕▓р╕Зр╕Бр╕╣р╕бр╕▓р╣Ар╕нр╕З” which roughly translated to “We didn’t get hire to come here” and not “р╕бр╕╢р╕Зр╕Чр╕│р╕нр╕░р╣Др╕гр╕Бр╣Зр╕Цр╕╣р╕Б р╕Бр╕╣р╕Чр╕│р╕нр╕░р╣Др╕гр╕Бр╣Зр╕Ьр╕┤р╕Ф” or “Whatever you do is correct and whatever I do is incorrect”, however, there is such the head band with the phase he said, but just not the one he showed.

Just a quick note of Peter Jackson’s presentation as well – first I thought it worth noting that I was present at Democracy Monument shortly before the shooting began on the ill-fated April 10, and observed many of the red shirts prominently holding signs of the king – especially those in the “front line.” Secondly, I have a question – a great many of the red shirts have clappers in the shape of the foot (at least as many as of the heart shape shown in the presentation). I thought this was a curious choice given the symbolism of feet in Thailand. It has been explained to me that it is due to the fact that the yellow have/had clappers in the shape of the hand. But somehow this doesn’t quite satisfy – can anyone add any further insight?

Tarrin’s spelling of the Thai word, р╕Ир╣Йр╕▓р╕З, was incorrect.
Also, his translation took away the spirit of the phrases.
р╣Др╕бр╣Ир╕Хр╣Йр╕нр╕Зр╕Ир╣Йр╕▓р╕З р╕Бр╕╣р╕бр╕▓р╣Ар╕нр╕З should be translated as, “No need to hire me, I willingly come here myself.”
р╕бр╕╢р╕Зр╕Чр╕│р╕нр╕░р╣Др╕гр╕Бр╣Зр╕Цр╕╣р╕Б р╕Бр╕╣р╕Чр╕│р╕нр╕░р╣Др╕гр╕Бр╣Зр╕Ьр╕┤р╕Ф should be translated as, “Whatever you do is right, whatever I do is wrong.”
The Truth Today says р╕лр╕вр╕╕р╕Ф! 2 р╕бр╕▓р╕Хр╕гр╕Рр╕▓р╕Щ.
It means, “Stop double standard!”
I think Aphisit and those pulling strings behind him should stop the discrediting operation against the NM.

Whats the reason you did not record the Q&A? would love to hear that.
[It was a judgement call made by the organisers, Tyrell Haberkorn and myself. We wanted to encourage as free and frank audience participation as possible and our feeling was that this would best be served by not recording the questions. When I get some time I will write up a brief summary of the discussion. Andrew Walker.]

saffir –
Yes, the foot clapper was a response to the hand clapper. I may have the chronology wrong, but I believe it also came after some incidents when PAD supporters threw shoes at Samak. It certainly came after PAD supporters used their hand clappers to harass their enemies at public appearances, including funerals.
So to my mind, at least, the appearance of the foot clapper was a rather good-humored escalation of the Yellow-Red battle, a way of underlining the hypocrisy of sanctimonious Yellow Shirts. That point, I think, was reinforced by a brief burst of tut-tutting over the foot clappers by various academic types (who didn’t seem to have anything to say about the shoes that were thrown at Samak, or any other breaches of decorum by the Yellow Shirts.)

Interesting video. I found Peter Warr’s comments particularly noteworthy, and especially because, as he says, the role of the global economic crisis in the Red Shirts’ dissatisfaction with Abhisit’s government has been so little discussed in any of the recent journalism on Thailand’s current crisis.
Nich’s Google Trends got me curious, so I tried the equivalent terms in English. Perhaps not surprisingly, in English the hot topic is Thaksin.

Sorry my English is not good but I will try my best.
My reason to enter and post message into this web board because I thought that all of you are not know Thai country that much, you just believe and read only one side of news or any kind of information.
The stories of demonstration are not for “Democracy”. (Flight for democracy should not like this, bomb around Bangkok area, shoots each other! Because we not communist country!) But the protester was brainwashing more than 3 years or at least after Thaksin being sentenced case of land fraud. He ran away out before being arrested in jail by some powerful man help him to go out of Thai country. Before he left, he overawe “If I cannot stay (without arrested) then all Thais and country will never found peaceful or happiness anymore any longer!!”
This is the start of brainwashing…Thaksin team tried many ways and many kinds to gather mass first step try underground plan…
1. Teaching country people to believe that he is innocent and alleged by unfair judgments.
2. Open public radio stations, starts Red radio
3. Buying and send Satellite Dish, starts Red TV
4. Set up publish company, starts Red newspaper
5. Promise to country people that if they can help and support him to go back “Home”, then he will return them with “release from debt and provide some pocket money” to each family.
5. According to the 4, who are interesting to this promotion have to register with ID card and receive new ID card which made by Thaksin team. This is to avoid Renegade.
The above are only few things that I could recall, but there are many activities to support the plan during 3 years or more. You must understand that our country people are in zone of undeveloped, uneducated and believe in ghost and spirit. They are innocent and naive but in the same time they are also influence group to the country. Because they are easy to persuade, easy to believe without any thinking or analyst before believe…
This is a shame of Thai country that we are try to be developed country but the same time, we still have many poor and uneducated people. Unfortunately we have a claver man like Thaksin to be PM but he is such a no moral and thinks only to create wealth. He dump the price of stock exchange then increase price to his related business, then issue the law to supports to his business such as discard the telecommunications concessions! Many things in wrong moral and unusual during he was PM and after he left! Story never ends until he can get his power back and also Thai country belongs to him!!
Well, most of Red shirts still believe that Thaksin is a good man and only he can help them to beyond from the poor. They believe the way of democracy that Thaksin and Red shirt leaders tell them day by day is the right! to flight to get rid of PM Abhisit, to destroy Bangkok, to stop double standard, and to overthrow the King!
I really want to know what is the reason being him does like this, he should spend his dirty money by corruption which it much more that we can imagine at least he can buys the Island!! Just let the country grow by internal and external economic, just let the country become peaceful then wait and see what PM Abhisit can do. If he is fail or no capability to handling the country then he will judge by Thais people by the elections.
I would like you who are educated people, open eyes and receive both side information or news and find the truth deeply NOT only what you have seen from screen or newspaper.
I love my country I love my King and he should not concern or relate to any battles from anyone. You may thing I also brainwashing to believe in King…the answer may be yes.
But just learn our culture and history before post your comments because it unfair to 60million of Thais who still face with scary to the terrorists, who still flounder to live, who still willing to having Royal family to not just a symbol but to be our loved, faithful and respect.
Thank you.

Hana, you are Thai, right? Have a look at this Youtube clip:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=41niGt9u80U&feature=player_embedded#!
What do you think? The backlash against this young student who is brave enough to stand up for what he believes in is disgusting . Have a look at the comments below the clip and those running lines that interrupt /appear time and again during the interview (obviously inserted into the clip by those who” know Thai culture well and love Thailand”

To Joy, Yes I am Thai and pround to be!
I dont know you are Thai or not but anyway thank you for concern. I have seen this clip before you sent to me. I am not surprise with this student becuase (if you can understand Thai language clearly) some parts he confused in himself.
One thinng that I can prove for you or any foreigner here is, on the day of rally at Silom road by various colours shirts group I was there from the first day both afternoon and evening. Due to my office is in Silom and this rally is subject to “Protect Silom road from The Red Shirts”. Joiners are not only office men and ladies who work on along Silom or Sathorn but including Silom living people & nearby, whoever interesting to protect theirown democracy and totally diffirent thinking with The Red!
On the date of bomp onto BTS, that day my friend and I we joined the event in afternoon as usual but that day I had an appointment with client and decided to join the event alone and my friend told me that she could not join tonight. During wait for the BTS, there was annoucement informed that BTS has to close for while…then after 10minutes with another announcement informed BTS stop service due to some trouble at Saladaeng Station!
My friend known that I was on the way to the meeting with various color shirts group, she called and told me, there were bombs or fire works attack BTS! I couldn’t imagine if I took previous train before the train that I was stood on and wait for leaving Taksin, what will happened to me!! Who you think can do such a kind of this badly? Government? Soldier? Police? Red Shirt? 3rd party?
I don’t trust anyone if said it bomb from Government, soldier, police even Red or 3rd party. Why? because we have to prove before believe that why we have “Brain” for…!!
Anyway, I blaim to anyone or group whom did this to people who have no weapons. I have no weapon!! I am office lady. I am not Silom living but Silom is the place that has my school, my office! Silom is the business area and worth than allow terrorists to attack! Also Rajprasong or any area in Bangkok or Thailand!
In clip, this student said “I asked one of various color shirts joiner that where are you from? He replied me he from Lamlooka. I suddenly ensure that this rally was hiring and paid to the joiners because Lamlooka is far and why Lamlooka living can hear the rally, any concern with this rally!!”
Do you see or notice any funny??
Well, Why Lamlooka people cannot concern, if Lamlooka people are working on Silom road. Or if Lamlooka people interesting and agreed with various color shirts’s ideal. Is it impossible and unacceptable?
While, Red or Yellow shirts rally also came from many areas. Why if various color shirts cannot do so…I don’t see the point that he said the rally was hiring because joiners not Silom living!! Even himself he is not Bangkok people, he came from Nakornprathom or somewhere because his sentence of voice is not Bangkok!
I also observe that wherever Yellow or Various color shirts gather for rally, then it always bomb?? Why it never happened to The Red Rally?? This is always my question to my mind! I joined both Yellow and Various color Rally and I met attack with M79, one last year at Sanam Luang near Emerald buddha temple!
And I would like to ask The Red that what is your exactly problem with Democracy and system. I living in Japan for 12 years! Japan also have Homeless! Many Japanese has no job or working with daily wage! If they are really need for “Democracy” then they have to ask them back that what they are doing and it can call “Democracy” or not!?
Joy, if you would like to know the truth you better find another clip that better than the one you sent me…it’s nothing to prove, even to believe…sorry! I agreed that was another opinion but it’s funny!
Eventually, if you interesting then I can share you my FB address.
Truth is not just only watch, read or listen. BUT you have to go out and find by yourself!

Hana #9 First of all welcome to New Mandala and thank you for the effort
applied to your post.
You may not be aware that many contributors to NM have unrestricted access to news and information from any publicly available source. After that, only personal bigotry, academic tenure and retirement plans that include sunsets over the Mekong could possibly influence any views expressed here at NM. So sit back and relax beside the wellspring of truth.

No matter what color they are… their idea of thinking at the end are the same which is to have a better future for Thailand. Even the red shirts out there, I’m sure none of them want to destroy their own country or , red yellow any colors they just have different ideas and opinions in what needs to be done to te country.
So here is the question….
What is needed to be done to fix this ideas and opinions problem?
I’m a Thai person and I do admit that the media here do cover up a lot of story and is being control. There are many opioions talking on the TV show give people different point of view of information creating people to believe differently. Not only that but many international websites are also blocked. It is hard for Thai people to find out what is really going on and what the truth really is.
And I do believe that “Double standard” do really exsit here in the country, With this “Double standard” there will never be a true justice and, a country with out true justice will never find peace.

I am in the middle of the those 2 groups…consider, Gov started to fund lot of money to support kids to go to school…uni’s from 1995 approx…there s started to be big gap in social between me and my parent(My parent s believed my suggesion by the way)…many of 30 yrs old are educated…i have no debt why my old generation are brand washed. This s the time of young generation but Tuksin is trying to get over power in the other side of population…Most of educated childs are escaped to overseas…that s because we could not find much opportunities. I will be back one day…once there is no more Tuksin…has gone with no power influent my old generations.

what we want it to be changed..??? why we have to change? Change needs to have a solid foundation…not now..not today and not straight away. Why don’t be passion…?? Change our programs of education….Our country will change..with peaceful…Tuksin can not change…He can not even behave himself…How come he leads us..where ever he goes..he would never be enough. He prperly 60 ys old by now..he needs to rest and retry.

Red foot clapper is significantly showed as opposit side to the yellow shirt demonstrator, plus Thai people consider food is the lower part of body..mockingly indicating red shirt people are considered as second class and lower class people.

I am Thai, currently living in Thailand. When the coup in 2006 I was studying in the US. I was informed about political issue from outside sources. When I got back and had conversations with Thais who were living in the country during that time and I was shocked that many Thais know so little about what had been going on in the country. Now I am starving for the uncensored analysis as the first speaker stated.
@Hana as you’ve said”This is a shame of Thai country that we are try to be developed country but the same time, we still have many poor and uneducated people.” Your words sounds a little bit like Abhisit’s (before he was the PM) when he claim that his party should govern the country as the poll claimed that though he lose the election, EDUCATED people voted for him……..I gone blank when I heard this. The problem of lack of education in people is a problem that any government have to solve in order to develop their country.
Not to use it as a tool to increase more inequality in the country. Or make it sounds right for you to be in power because you think of yourself as a more educated one…
Consider this, Whether you are a rich educated city person or a farmer who never gone to any school, still both have one voice. Equally. You have to respect that. To knock the system is not a long term solution. If Taksin ‘s party was corrupt then use the system to knock him down, not go knock the system.

Dr Peter Werr’s presentation missed the fact that before Abhisit took over the government, The PAD closed the two international Airports and the government’s house and the court kicked out two successive PM’s and there were thugs riding on the back of trucks shooting at people. May be these facts had some effects on the GDP and the poor economy. Certainly hurt tourism and exports.

Re” I think Aphisit and those pulling strings behind him should stop the discrediting operation against the NM.”
I’m puzzled by what you say here.
I assume by NM you mean New Mandala.
As far as can be ascertained from this web-site, it is still not blocked in Thailand. Remarkable.
Surely Abhisit deserves some credit for keeping free, open, and democratic discussion alive here.
People can try discrediting NM as much as they like – that’s democracy and free speach.
But the very high quality of this site speaks for itself.

Abhisit want to get rid of Thaksin, he not care about economic.. not only loan money Abhisit also sue thaksin and get Thanksin money around 45,000 million baht.
Abhisit speech very well but he not good in administration.
People in Thailand they can die for King no matter what , who not be loyal will be attacked.
One important factor that they belive in one of fortune teller “р╕лр╕бр╕Фр╕Щр╕┤р╕Ф р╕Бр╕┤р╕Ир╕Ир╕▓” who said that soon the army will own the country and get rid all red shrts from country.

Since the conflict is at least in part a matter of class/economic disparity, I find it interesting that one presenter chose to measure Thai interest based on Google searches.
I live in an urban setting and I realize that many people, primarily younger males, are becoming computer/Internet savvy, but even in the urban areas education/age/economics are barriers to using computers. In the rural areas those barriers are monumental. To measure interests based on Internet searches introduces a major sampling bias if you think the results somehow reflect on the interests of the general population.
Also, looking at headbands, clappers, posters etc says something about the marketing techniques of those with the money to produce and distribute such paraphernalia and very little about the grass-roots motivation for joining a movement or the expectations of the people who man the barricades.
I stopped watching the video half way through (out of disappointment in its quality) so I may have missed a sudden improvement in the level of the presentation, but it seemed likely that it would continue to be a breathless (literally … was there a shortage of oxygen on the dais?) , sophomoric discussion of what to many of us is a serious subject. Clearly one can see the importance of having Thai people involved in any such discussion. In their absence, intellectual depth and breadth on this topic is sorely missing.

Hana’s comments reflect real issues in Thailand. The term “brainwashing” as he used is clearly still in place. What worries me the most is that most “educated” people, old or young, still think poor “country people” hold no ability to think for themselves. Big gap, double standard, are still there. Thailand is a society of fear, fear of not being wealthy otherwise no one will respect them. So they have to act wealthy, loan big sums of money to buy unnecessary bigger house, bigger car, shinier shoes, hanging out at hippier club, etc. The consequence is Thailand gets a whole lot of selfish people who are too busy trying to decorate themselves for superficial result–socalled respect from others. No need to be concerned of what is going on around them as long as they’re not affected directly (they don’t mind if they’re affected indirectly as long as they go about their lives without a problem, for example, pretend to love the winner, whoever it is, as long as they won’t be hunted and hanged when it’s all done). So you see, this society is full of liars and selfish lots.
I am Thai, BTW.

I think Thasin has the bad idea to become a King (But in term of President). All of Thai People, Only Thai People are not allow him to do that. If he come back in Thailand, all of Thai People will try to eliminate him very faster.

You guys would never feel like we Thais how we have to force with Taksin’s party paid for the election votes. Nobody could say coz the police wouldn’t help as Taksin have good relationship with the police that most of his friends have controll and get good paid from Taksin.
We all knew how bad he is ,but I wouldn’t want to say coz it’s just like to play the piano for the Buffaloes and the buffaloes in Holland never get what the thais feel and why we love our King .Here is the speech of the real Thai filmstar in Thailand whom said it out loud and you guys whom are trying to make Taksin Popular .Just remind yourselves .If you Guys ,don’t love the King ,Just get out from Thailand coz this is Hismajesty’s Land and you guys should appreciate this.

To have so many comments from Thai people is very welcoming. To those Thais, may I ask a question?
Your sincere love for the King is unquestioned. Will you have the same love for the next King? And do you expect your views on the monarchy will remain after the succession?
0

well…. i’m thai, i love my country and i love my King
i’m sure that i’ll sincered love the next King as well as the King
and can i ask you a question? what do you want?.. do you want to deteriorate the Thais views?

I’m living in Thailand. Although I cannot speak Thai, I’ve been noticing a few things:
1.) the media is streamlined – cartoons in the yellow press and all.
2.) Taksin is the bogey man – but he was a $ billionaire before entering politics and contrary to all accusations, all the alledged acts of corruption amount to a comparatively low amount in the $ millions.
3.) Very convenient – the recent grab for his assets. Those who suffer from corrupt cops know how this goes – – -)
4.) Certain news items are NOT being fairly presented or commeted upon, e.g. the Electorate commission’s ruling on the ruling party’s $ 8 million contribution.
5.) Now consider a former elected PM’s ruling over a cooking show.
6.) When the King spoke, he was addressing the judges, not the warring society. Don’t hold your breath for a quick and fair and lawful ruling – the Electoral commission is demanding that Abhisit be banned from politics for 9 years and the ruling party be dissolved!
7.) There is a huge SIMPLIFICATION going on. Red = terrorists and arsonists and non Thai etc. A mob for rent, paid for by Taksin etc. But don’t forget, the results of the last elections are not reflecting 1005 vote buying on the part of the Reds.
8.) The government loves it – lese majeste laws (they wanted to include Privy Council members, too but that was criticised and then dropped) plus extreme censorship. Combined with weak journalists who do not ask any unpleasant questions like the $ 8 million violation and the call for his own resignation.
9.) All kinds of underhanded tricks are being prepared to handle the fact that in the next elections, Abhisit who lacks a public vote (his party won the last elections in 1992) is likely to not win the next elections. The answer? Just postpone them!!
10.) It is terrible, seeing how Red shirt leaders are being presented in a state of undress. If the Reds had won, I would oppose them parading Abhisit in his cell, scantily clad.
Those who live here know the double standards. A murderous road rage attack? Years in jail with no bail or able to keep the driving license? Trick question: who is the son of the Chief of Police? http://www.thaivisa.com
Where are forensic teams analyzing the ammunition found in the bodies? No investigation into the sniper killings? Some report that people cooking for the crowd in the temple were mowed down. Surely, one can tell whether the Army or some ragtag protesters used certain ammo?
Oh, after April 10th, I recall the Army spokesman’s claims that the soldiers “only fired into the air”.
It’s getting silly.
Go on, extend the curfew, hand out life on lese majeste offenses and someone please explain whether royal pardons are only for foreigners, or also obtained by Thais rotting in jail for free speech? Just asking, based on the king’s speech in which he asks to change the way the system works (my interpretation is criticism with lese majeste laws).
While I have no idea what the truth is, a lot of the stories put forth have too much spin for my liking.
