On this issue, I believe PM Abhisit likes to repeat himself: ” . . . Thai elections to take place soon as the country no longer faces serious threats of violent upheavals ( … reminder: the Black May 2010 Rajaprasong bloody rampage) . . .”. That could mean early next year 2011, or 2011, or 2012, or 2013, or 2014, or 2015, or 2016, or 2017, or 2018, or ….
At Iraq and Afghanistan of course, the elections were held (despite the violence/chaos) because the hope was such elections could restore some semblance of normalcy and democracy in these regions. But those loud M79 grenade attacks-explosions in Black May 2010 must have broken PM Abhisit’s ear drums because he appears not to hear properly.
Farrelly’s point that enemies of Thaksin (errr democracy, I mean) fear a sharp period of retribution should they lose an EARLY election, could be real motivation ??? If it was me, and if I fear the dagger of revenge from Montenegro or his petrol-bottle-carrying Red fans, I’ll hold the elections NOW while the ‘smell of fear’ strongly lingers . . . and not later when everyone’s at peacefully at ease. When people are very FEARFUL (like those Iraqis/Agfhans) their motivations when they vote are very clear.
Surely it will only take the passing of one man for moral panic to occur and a state of emergency (by any other name) to be imposed for a prolonged period of national self-reflection. The fin de siecle event/s that cannot be named are the drivers behind all that we see now.
I guess on the positive side it’s better than the high toll manufactured scenario that “Still Anonymous” fears. Why create an event when the real one is in the offing?
The big question is surely what state damage limitation exercises are in place and are they effective? I ask this as a political neutral. What is the future for the multi-hued citizenry and their ruritanian guardians?
BTW guessing a date for this would be much LM so I’ll pass I’m afraid!
Below is the clip of the students marching out of the TU campus towards the Democracy Monument on Sunday. Even if one does not understand Thai being spoken in the clip, one can see the action clearly.
Who says the students do nothing in this current situation ? This kind of student activity is certainly not reported in the mainstream pro-govt media.
i think we give Crispin more credit that he deserves especially for his shallow and ill-informed comments concerning the Red Shirts on Dateline 19 September…pathetic
The only flaw you’ve made in your analysis is to assume that some rational thinking is entering the equation for Prayuth and the elites he protects.
There’s also an assumption that Abhisit and his party are holding some cards.
My view is this – some terrible atrocity, assassination or assassination attempt will occur, moral panic will ensue and coup will be declared for “the people’s protection”.
Then the shit will hit the fan in a big way.
Maybe 2,000 – 5,000 dead before international community intervenes? I guess it depends how much shit is going on elsewhere.
I’m not optimistic. I’m scared. The elite and the people in charge of the army are not sane, rational or connected in anyway to the real world.
And Abhisit is just a patsy.
(and I hope I am completely wrong and everything is resolved peacefully and democratically – but this is now looking unlikely),
As for firewood spurs, yes, they are all included:
those at Nong Nam Khun, Kut Chik and Sung Noen on the Khorat line, Hua Wai and Rai Oi on the Northern line, and at Huai Mut on the Southern line.
Also private timber tramways at Ban Nong Mu on Khlong Hok Wa Sai Bon, at Kabinburi, at Amphoe Phanom Sarakham (Khun Chai Eu Withaya), at Si Ratcha, & at Ban Bang Bao (East Asiatic Co.)
and the various teak logging lines in the north: Anglo Siam Co., Bombay Burmah Co., Borneo Co., East Asiatic Co. & Compagnie Est-Asiatique Francaise.
All are mapped and their histories and purpose described in the text.
Quarry/ballasting spurs are also detailed.
I would be glad to hear from readers with any further information about these spurs and lines, or about any others that I may not have uncovered.
Indeed I include a full 15 A4 pages of text on Laos: 8 pages on the Khone Island line, including 6 contemporary accounts from the journals of the constructor, Lt. Georges Simon, and of travellers on it (both during its coolie- and locomotive-powered stages).
The 5 pages on the Tan Ap – Thakek line, including a two route descriptions, one by a strong promoter of the line, Henri Cucherousset.
And finally a page on the Nong Khai-Tha Na Laeng branch over the Friendship Bridge towards Vientiane (along with info on further lines proposed by Laos in recent years).
All three lines are illustrated by bilingual colour maps showing all stations, (and the cableway over Mu Gia pass), as well as reproductions of a 1943 topographic map showing the cableway, a 1930 map of the Khone Island line, and some early 20th century illustrations of the Khone Island line, including the slips and one of a steamboat being transshipped along the line (the initial reason it was built was to get French steamboats onto the Mekong above the Khone Falls).
Sorry for my mistake, it was Student Federation of Thailand (SFT) not FST.
Yes some of the people that went to see Abhisit at Chulalongkorn are from SFT. However, that protest was not under the SFT guidance but by individual students initiative.
the people of Bangkok and most of Thailand already believe that when it comes to the Reds politics and Thaksin’s ‘democracy’ pronouncements, they need no further enlightenment.
Funny, I’m from Bangkok and I don’t really feel that way. Actually because of the May killing I got couple of new friends from my office building, who were formally a full yellow shirt supporter.
At last, the spirit of Redshirts to let all Thais know that we want equal society, no more slave and Ammart in Thailand. We show everyone know that we fight till all of Ammart must be abolished and bring back all of wealth to the lower people, all of Ammart who take advantage from lower people must be kicked off from comfortable life to work in the fields and stay in villages . Those Ammart will learn and understand slave better that the same as in Nepal and Cambodia.
The following Voicetv clip (in Thai only) features recently appointed spokeswoman of the students federation in which she explained why she is against the 2006 coup and is now ready to travel upcountry to meet fellow students and discuss current political situation.

If you can read Thai, there is a report about their Sunday activity, if you can’t then there’s a small picture down the page you can clearly see a picture of a student making the SFT’s statement.
