The junta enters the game very late. For China and North Korea, they started much earlier so it was easier for them to control the internet. It is difficult when the people get used to internet freedom and then the government tries to take it away.
Maybe but the ultimate decision is with the Malaysian people, in particular the Muslim Malays. If they decide to have hudud laws (and if that survey is accurate, a tremendous majority of them in Kelantan would like to), it may not matter that anyone else objects.
President Jokowi is an incompetent and na├пve man of integrity. He is way over his head and lacks the capability to run a large nation. Is he honest, however, and tending toward calling a “spade” a “spade”, rather than disingenuous verbal biliousness ? I think so. Is that a positive baby step for Indonesia ? Yes. Especially, when compared to the downward trajectory of its wealthier neighbor.
Malaysia will very urgently and purposefully need to address the problem you the problem you highlighted (below).
Any suggestions on how this might be done?
“…The problem in Malaysia is that the fundamental system is rooted in religion (Islam) and race (Bumiputra). This has been so since the day of independence which is what is detrimental to this nation and the extent of it can be seen today…”
You’ve attitude problem & don’t really know what you want in life. Sounds like you got somewhat scholarship to study industrial engineering in the States. You’ve never been thru any hardships of college & living expenses. You expect an American degree should get you a high paying job right away. Unlike you, I came to the States right after May 13 Riots with only $50 & I had to work my ass off with all kinds of odd jobs to put myself thru univ. After I got my PhD in Pharmaceutical Science, it took me several years before I got involved in the development of drugs. Believe it or, I first got in the company as a lab asst. washing test tubes for a year waiting for opportunity. With a degree in industrial engineering you can explore job opportunies in areas like operations management, operations research, management science, management engineering, safety engineering, system engineering, ergonomics or human factors engineering. Good luck, young man.
Surprizing that the totalitarian military government has not resorted to its new-found friend, China, or North Korea, for that matter, for help in controlling the internet and the flow of information. Perhaps that is their next step.
I find it concerning that these issues are discussed without any reference to the people involved in the sex trade, and what outcomes would be best for them? Being based in the UK is probably not the best position to make an opinion on Malaysian issues.
The anecdote about Monash Engineering is not accurate. Minimum requirement to be a lecturer is at least a Masters degree. The most he could have been would be a tutor – if he is lecturer then he’d have gotten an additional degree.
Realism within reality oriented solution is what the article lacks.
How come among foreign and local NGO there are not more for the Kala in Yakhine?
Injecting the Kala as some how should be more privileged with an “R” setting is ludicrous, considering overall suffering of all due mainly to the west.
Contribution to Civil society, Ma Ba Tha can claim more contribution than any other Muslim related Society.
AT this point any west careless useless answer to the Kala is just a question by the equally careless useless west. Instead The Kala question, decide by the Hlutthaw looking for an enduring answer must be the norm even if the west HR based criteria is not satisfied.

Red and green rallies and the vote
I’m afraid it seems NOT everyone is united on political reform. The President ‘begs to differ’ ominously invoking the C word.
Is the great ‘reformist president’ sh**ting in his longyi and contemplating changing back to his green trousers and side arms?
