Your story is an imaginary one. Now I understand why Buddhists are killing Muslims there! They must be motivated by such stories!!
In Bangladesh, everyday we see hundreds of Rohinga people trying to enter Bangladesh illigally, not Bangladeshi people desperately trying to enter Myanmar! We are already overloaded with these refugees, and they are making all kind of problems to our country. So open your eyes and speak truth instead of spreading stories!!
I do agree with the argument. But one doubt appears in my mind is how could those crowded youths came out to the street to welcome Sam Rainsy at the airport? This is unprecedentedly and historical in Cambodia politics for this 21st century.
I don’t think these two factors are enough to describe such enthusiastic crowd.
I like the review and welcome it. A little rough on the edges and in the prose is just fine with me. I like that New Mandala gets these reviews written and up on the site relatively quickly after the works appear. This one clearly works hard to be thorough while still holding to a scholarly tone and perspective. That’s tough to do quickly with something new.
I would, too, however, like to ask: Can the reviewer add a paragraph or two to expand on that little aside, “with us today”? In what sort of ecological niche are these groups working?
I don’t see it as depressing John. Not at all. A more vibrant democratic process in Cambodia through a (potentially) more vociferous opposition is something to be welcomed. If this is a result of wild and undeliverable promises, so what? What’s more, some people may incorporate the whole episode into the construction of a Cambodian-style ‘Machiavellian moment’! You don’t think Cambodians see what you see?
I’m sure you are right, but you paint a depressing scenario, very common in Thailand, Malaysia, India and elsewhere, whereby politicians make wild and unfunded promises at election time in order to outbid each other.
Then whoever wins either reneges on the promise or tries to meet it and sees large percentages siphoned off into the pockets of corrupt local administrators.
Right now the process of mutual adoption (master and protégé – saya mway dabè mway)is going on in full swing with old Master Shifu China anxiously watching. Once the regime becomes their son of a bitch like FDR once famously said, it can get away with murder literally.
The history of the West is nothing if not consistent. They have no permanent friends or foes, only permanent interests. They now have not just ASSK like before but as a natural extension the 88 Gen, Zargar, and most importantly the generals under their wings. The pivot is bearing fruit. More carrot and just a shadow of the stick. They will sacrifice our freedoms to fight for their freedom to exploit our human and natural resources to the limit, and our dear leaders both the regime and the so called opposition will say better to be exploited than not, better still with our big buck new best friends joining in. Big happy family of the New World Order.

The reviewer seems to have a significant amount vested with the Cao Dai and Hoa Hao. I wonder if he could clarify to what extent they went on to play important roles after they were smashed by Diem – I indeed thought they just faded away. To state that they are “with us today”, with no qualification, and right after complaining the book lacked “complexity and depth” is pretty crass. It looks like a somewhat rushed summary.
Sorry for the ringing ears, U Moe Aung. ‘fraid sharing those views even “broadly” may get Plan B going again.
True the Kyat Pyae Asoya and its various Dalans do maintain constant circus around town. And True to character, Burmese people flock to any one or anybody famous.
The real heroes of today are being put in jail and tortured in age-old tradition out of sight and definitely out of any “dissident” and “Free” news agencies’ mind while that proverbial whit elephant UN and its master the “west” are busy praising the “reformed” government currently buying some “humanity” by releasing some “Political prisoners” like hypercritical people would release fish, after catching the very fish in the first place. The “new” detainees do not count as they do not fit in the grand scheme of “Great Reform”. According to Zarganar they are just paid ones any way like rent a crowd. He would surely know as his current masters are true master of it. Still nice to see Chinese style pictures stuck on the trees and all that. Very refreshing. Hoping to see the culprits with cardboard hanging in the neck doing public repenting with the heads pushed down. May be later.
Now with double the number of “People’s Police” trained and armed by US, UK and Australia in internationally acceptable and slick and smooth looking ways to evict the ancestral land owners off the land (crowd control it is called) as they happen to be on the places the international honored “GUESTS” want to use – like the Arabs rudely living for centuries on the land right above the American oil deposits- for various reason (for the good of the country, mind you) we will be entertained even more than the largest number of most horrible killing pictures Burma has already produced in the last two years of “Astonishing Reforms”.
Not so exceptional tocharian. Joke about the politicians’ tripe can’t be cooked as it is so filthy and rotten has tangible basis although on national basis (Burmese Nation) the popular “changed attitude” concept (http://www.dictatorwatch.org/articles/burmanewmovement.pdf) of letting of Aung San Suu Kyi’s treachery has no ground as she never ever showed any concrete identification with the masses except haughty, patronizing speeches given from the plinth even before showing her true hand with siding with her “equals” (inside and outside the country) in whose company she is seen everyday.
But, after reading extensive arguments by Nick Nostitz above about the Hitler-worship-ping people in India he encountered , another good example might be the very fact that India is by far the most Zionist country not just in Asia but also in the world.
Incidentally, off the thread, there are a large body of people including educated elites in India who regards Gandhi as a traitor and support Nathuram Godse . Takes all sorts as poms would say!
Possibly the worst week in recent Malaysian history. Cops and conservative elements says its because of the repeal of preventive laws, detractors says poor quality policing, and overall governance. What do you say?
Another shooting today caps a week of horror never seen before in Malaysia
Luang Phao, are you saying that Prem, ex-Prime Minister of Thailand for 8 years (1980-88), Head of the Thai King’s Privy Council for 15 years (1998-present), Commander-in-Chief of the Thai Royal Army from 1978-1981, leader of the Royalists in Thailand, one of Thailand’s “Hidden Hands”, primary organizer of the 2006 coup against Thaksin, not only fought with the Imperialist Japanese Army invading Burma as a young lieutenant in WW II, but also fought to re-open the heroin trade between northern Burma and Thailand? How can such a scandalous accusation against one of the main pillar’s of the Thai Royalist Establishment possibly be true?!
Whilst I broadly share your views that was quite a tirade even by your standards, Ohn. She presides over the Rule of Law and Tranquility (sic) Committee. So you can see with the eye of faith how peaceful and secure our peoples feel in the new Burma ├а la Suu & Sein.
The armed ethnic groups do not want her as mediator since they believe she is a stake holder, and the govt already has a very useful tool in the form of the Myanmar Peace Center.
The same generals who killed and maimed and still do (Letpadaung less than a year ago ,murderous riots in the Arakan and the rest of the country instigated and inflamed by them, the ongoing war with the Kachin and Shan) are now so respectable and legit the 88 Gen has in the collaborative spirit of the Lady invited the perpetrators to the Silver Jubilee of 8888. So I suggest they change to acheik htamains to match for the occasion.

If you read Alfred McCoys classic “politics of heroin in SE Asia you’ll realise the Thai armies main occupation was in reopening the heroin trade with Chiang Kai sheks nationalist army rather than supporting their Japanese allies. rather more pragmatic than idealistic I’d say. The nationalist ideals are for public consumption.

Now that you mention it, I don’t believe I’ve seen a single bird in Thailand. Not one.
