Some New Mandala readers are, no doubt, already aware of the recent outburst by Myanmar’s Consul General to Hong Kong, Ye Myint Aung. In a missive sent around Hong Kong he has some breathtaking lines.
You can now make up your own mind about his comments as a reader has forwarded the Ian Holliday opinion piece (bottom right hand corner of the page) that sparked the controversy aswell as the full version of the diplomat’s letter. I am reliably informed that Ye Myint Aung is a graduate of the Defense Services Academy and is a former tatamdaw field commander. It would be great to know some more about him.
Whatever his qualifications, I guess they didn’t teach “Public Relations 101” at DSA in his day. But how does he rate, more importantly, as a representative of his government? Does Ye Myint Aung give us a fair understanding of the official Myanmar position on the Rohingya? You be the judge.
Asia Sentinel has more.
