Accurate, timely and interesting news on local developments in the far-flung corners of Southeast Asia is often hard to come by. I maintain some focus on a number of the region’s more remote areas, including Burma’s northern Kachin State. While there is some Burmese and Jinghpaw language coverage of what goes on up there, little of that flows to the English language media with any regularity.

One of the most prolific and, in my experience, most accurate English-language reporters of events in that part of the world is The Irrawaddy‘s Khun Sam. Friday’s brief article on electricity supply to Myitkyina is a good example of his informative style. For New Mandala readers with an interest in northern Burma and Kachin issues, I recommend you keep an eye out for his work.
